I've seen some horrifying stuff in my day but this guy actually charges for work like this.

http://www.armslist.com/posts/2835408/fayetteville-north-carolina-handguns-for-sale--grip-stippling-service-next-day-turn-around-

I mean, with a one day turn around, what could possibly go wrong? (and no mention of an FFL to boot) I'm not making fun of his work, I'm lamenting his treatment of his weapon. (and the fact that he considers it professional quality) I stipple, but I by no means consider myself a professional. It's an art form, and I have tremendous respect for those who do it well.
Seeing that picture makes me die a little inside.

Anybody else have stippling horror stories?

Hey! Picking on my work on a public forum is rude. This is one of my best pieces! ;)

Its a public service announcement about respecting your firearms! ;) Learning to stipple is a long process and everyone has to start somewhere. I just recommend starting on pmags and A2 grips until your skill level gets high enough. But hey, the post includes a picture of the work. If somebody were to like what they see I wouldn't stop them from paying for the service.

Haha I stippled my own M&P and I am very happy with it. But I would never offer to stipple anyone else not even for free. I see a ton of people that offer it as a service and I have a ton of respect for you and others that do it. If anyone asks me I say "if you got the guts to do it yourself go for it if not pay someone to do it" . I am not one of those people you pay.

I have to say though, even a stippling job which may not be visually appealing can greatly improve the feel of a weapon. Even if it hurts your eyes.

One of the local shops which has the best reputation for gunsmithing does stipple jobs that look exactly like that. Guy I work had his Glock 34 done there and it is the most horrific thing to fire. I don't even know if wearing gloves would help with.

I know a guy who could fix your friend's G34. I've got a local guy who does exceptional work on handguns. He's got a bit of a waitlist though. (He's got an FFL and runs a pretty steady operation)

They say stippling allows the operator to maintain grip on his weapon even if its covered in blood. It sounds like that job was designed to prove the point.

I wish I would have kept that picture of the Glock on Arms list that listed it as a "custom" job. He removed too much material from the trigger guard and it looks like he had to basically remove the entire trigger guard because he boogered it up so bad. Probably one of the worst jobs I've seen on any firearm. I can't believe it sold.

They were trying to make sure that they could choke up as far as possible on the grip.

If your middle finger isn't behind the trigger then you aren't doing it right!

I found this recently, I have a feeling it might be the gun you are talking about. (If it can in fact still be called a "gun")

Reminds me of the older custom 1911's you'd see with the trigger guard shaved off. Ugly as sin IMO lol.

I've always added texturing as opposed to stippling.

Oh my.
Seems a good way to reduce the resale value by 50%.
Why not get a Hogue slip-on?
Or a $.50 roll of friction tape?

The above example is a way to reduce the resale value to far less than that. A professional stippling job can add value.

There's always a time and place for the right kind of stipple work. I'd like to think something like my M&P with full grip stippling and undercut trigger guard makes a strong case for the argument that any person willing to research and practice this skill can achieve functional, and hopefully aesthetically pleasing, results.

http://i968.photobucket.com/albums/ae167/Supergyro/2014-06-06195249_zps3659b0dc.jpg (http://s968.photobucket.com/user/Supergyro/media/2014-06-06195249_zps3659b0dc.jpg.html)

All stippling was done using a soldering iron with a flat tip ground to a triangle shape. Trigger guard undercut was done using varying grits of sandpaper wrapped around deep well sockets of various size. No Dremels allowed!

Wow, that's good work. I'm "artistically challenged" so I wouldn't even attempt something like that on some practice polymer, much less one of my beloved M&P's.

I'm a big fan of Talon Grips myself. You can buy their material in sheets and put it on everything. I added it to the Spur to try to regain the grip that NY took from me when they delcared the Magpul MOE+ a no-no.

I've seen some decent stipple jobs. I've also seen some stuff that looked like a blind beaver attacked it. Everything between ugly to sharp as hell with all kinds of jagged peaks from the material they left. I've also seen some guys ruin a Glock then try to sell it as "custom stippled" and demand a premium for their disaster.

Stippling has never been attractive to me as far as benefit compared to easy to remove grip tapes.

Especially when it is the cause of the blood.

That could probably be cleaned up pretty easily, looks fairly shallow. I would expect a hefty discount on it though as its been "Smiffed".

Agreed. I'd snap that thing up in a heartbeat so I could work some magic on it and then turn it around for a profit.

Now I'm really curious what the scope of this forum post was...

Dude! I was at the range about six months ago and someone stole my lower from my range bag. Got a call today from the police who informed me that my lower was recovered in a raid on a meth lab/machine shop and look wtf the tweakers did!!!!

Or perhaps...

Check this out, so my buddy said hold my beer.... Next thing I knew...

It surely wasn't done on purpose and posted by someone acting like a proud papa of a newborn right? That would be an uncomfortable post to read.

Hahaha, this reminds me of being on 600rr.net back in the day, this guy was trying to shave as much weight off of his bike, so he took a hole saw, and literally cut out a bunch of 1.5"-2" holes from THE FRAME!! Don't worry about the structural integrity of anything... lol
