It's entirely different from traditional stippling. There is no roughness, no scratchy feeling, and no snagging fibers at all whatsoever. I carry this pattern AIWB with no undershirt with zero irritation.
This pattern was born out of a desire for the complete set of advantages provided by grip enhancement without any of the downsides. Running your finger over it feels smooth, and gripped in the hand it melds more comfortably than any other stippling I've created or handled.

Hah! You know I can't share trade secrets. But I know you ain't asking me to. It's just a skill I've developed with a lot of experimentation and critical thinking.
Steady hands and proper tools never hurt either.

Here is a PMAG I did for a friend a couple days ago. FDE 20 round mag, painted black, and stippled to create a two-tone look. Unfortunately the picture doesn't do it justice and it looks best under sunlight. Next time I am going to try to mask off the stippled portions before paint to hopefully minimize the amount of black paint visible. I also think a black floorplate would help break up the FDE.

I agree about that floor plate.

Here's a UWCRG grip I redid for Aragorn. He played with a couple textures before I put my iron to it so the polymer was a little burned but it still came out well.

Yeah I'm super eager to get it. I was a bit surprised it looked so different than other pics of his fishnets, but he pointed out that different polys act differently, plus it was burned when he got it. Not things I'd given previous thought too.

Still looks good, nice improvement to the butcher job I'd given it.

I'll be reporting back once I've gotten it installed.

If it's as nice as the MOE grip I got from BC, which I'm sure it will be, I have no doubt you'll love it. That thing looks super comfy. I need to get BC to do a fishnet MOE for me ASAP.

This thing is waaaaaaaaay more comfortable than that honeybadgered MOE you got from me.

Visually, the spots that look less clean are where a large point was used to press deeply on a previous stipple job. But in person it isn't particularly noticeable and it's still smooth enough to rub on your cheek without taking any skin off or scratching.

Got my grip from BC today and got it installed. Thing feels freaking fantastic. In feel, it's very similar to my KMR panels, even though they look radically different. I do wish I'd have had him do it on a clean slate grip however, as the ridges still look chewed up from the previous stipple job so it's not as clean looking as other jobs he's posted. I did this mostly for looks, so, my own fault for sending a grip in for redemption, but it is radically improved from its former self both in form and function.

Starting with a clean slate definitely gets the cleanest results. That said, I'm very pleased with the transformation. Even with the pattern variance caused by previous stippling It says something about the standards I've set that you notice the difference. Redeeming a hard to find UCWRG grip is worth it too.
What do you think of those inset borders?

It really is fantastic, both in feel and transformation. The fishnet has excellent grip properties but is nearly smooth to the touch, when I grip it the smooth portion in the web of my hand almost feels like empty air in comparison. Seriously, I had to make sure I was gripping properly.

I become even more pleased every time I handle it.

Good point, I wonder if the stippling would affect the jig.

I'll have to give this some more thought. I saw a buddy post a mock up of his lower and a Glock slide, and it looked pretty good. I couldn't help but think how much better the lower would look with even a decent stippling job.

Battle Cock
24 May 2016, 10:18
I know the jig would still hold tightly to the forward portion if I leave it unmodified but I'd want to contour just about everything else on the grip and trigger guard area. Even the beaver tail needs reshaping.

I love the guys in stippling groups who are always shouting "don't pay for work!!! It's not hard! Anyone can do it!!"

Anyone can pay to replace a frame too.

In brighter news, I've started machining my Polymer80 PF940 frame and I've got a Zev SOCOM slide in the mail for it. Once fitment and function is confirmed I'll be contouring and texturing the whole thing.

So far the dremel has been easier and cleaner to machine with than a drill press.

I figured you guys might like to see a visual representation of the grip characteristics of my fishnet.
As I've said before, it's smooth to run your hands over, but squeezing it with a shooting grip accesses the potential of the texture.
The following picture was taken after an exaggerated tight grip for illustrative purposes.

It needed soooo much work. I'll post some before and after shots once it's completely finished.

Mods to the frame so far include enhanced beavertail contour, glove bevel/interior trigger guard polish, HK style trigger guard contour, primary undercut, trigger guard undercut, magwell reduction, magwell cuts, interior magwell contour, mag release bevel, complete OEM texture and ridge removal, and inset fishnet stippling.

I wish I could get one of these into your hands so you could see how truly superior fishnet stippling is over the velvet style.

Just ask Aragorn.

Fact.

I've got a lava rock/pebble texture on an M&P. My Umbrella grip before BC got ahold of it had originally deep golf ball like texturing, followed by a finer and more even stipple job later on. I had a previous M&P frame that was done in a tree bark pattern.

BC's Fishnets are better in feel than all the above to the touch, and can hang with the best of them in actual traction when gripped. I can't imagine a better grip application for carry. Or really at all.

...not that I'd be opposed to trying his new chainlink (chainsaw...?) pattern.

Chainsaw stippling is durable and comfortable, but it's not just not quite as luxurious as fishnet.

Speaking of durability, every velvet style stippling I've created has inevitably worn down and lost some of its grip characteristics. Which, is good for carry, since it makes it less scratchy, but it reduces texture functionality.

Fledge, that grip is definitely my favorite AR grip mod to date. The cerakote allows for pretty exceptional border definition.

The reason why it's not popular is because when you laser plastics like what the Glock lowers are made out of it creates a chemical which is very dangerous. This requires a very high end air vent system most people don't have access to.

Plus... who cares?

That's machine cut checkering in 1911 terms, which can be really nice, or if you get golf balls or something that require a bit more skill craft in the machine work, pretty cool.. but it's not hand cut checkering.

The nicest builds are handcut checkering you have to tell people are handcut. Under a magnifier you may find one or two small errors. It was crafted.

Battlecock has the same thing down with stippling. It almost looks laser cut, instead a very talented craftsman laid hands to it. To me, and I think many others, that's worth much more than an automated process on a custom gun.

This doesn't apply to my stippling ;-) but pretty damn close with my checkering.

voodoo_man
30 December 2016, 18:20
I don't care either way, except that with a laser machine you can cut/paste designs which would otherwise be difficult to apply.

I don't care either way, except that with a laser machine you can cut/paste designs which would otherwise be difficult to apply.

I've had some interest in using laser engraving for grip work but there are a lot of downsides. I don't think I would ever consider one for anything other than cutting logos on the side of a large product run of handguns to save myself the headache of doing it by hand.

The biggest issue with laser engraving "stippling" is that you are stuck in two dimensions without more expensive equipment, and the resulting surface has little actual added grip.

First, welcome to WEVO! Take a look around, there's a lot to learn and a lot of good people here.

Just out of curiosity, where'd you find my work?

There's no real secret to polishing polymer. It's like polishing anything else, except you have to avoid applying too much friction so it doesn't melt. (Usually that precludes mechanical polishing)

If you want to smooth it out, buy yourself several tiers of sandpaper grits. 120-800 or higher if you want. Spend a lot of time sanding with the lowest grit first, and then progressively work you way up to higher grits. It takes time, but it's worthwhile.

I just found it doing a google image search for the PF940 and stippling. I just saw it while browsing this thread, page 36 post 539.

Leveling up in sandpaper is what I've been doing so far. It's definitely not easy. Every time I think I've sanded enough with one grit and move on, I realize pretty quick that I moved on too soon.

Put in a LOT of time with your lowest grit paper. If you sand it as smooth as you can possibly get it with that paper, you will eliminate the deeper scratches that will plague you at later stages.

This X 100. If you keep working the 100 range and 220gr until the paper is almost smooth, you're actually working closer to a 320 or so finish, which allows you to immediately see any issues. Typically when polishing polymer or metal, I use many pieces of the lower grit, by the time I'm to 600 or so it's only 1 or 2.

EODTech08
1 January 2017, 20:55
Thanks for the info. I'll have to go back and start with 120. Have either of you tried wet sanding techniques with these?

Axlnut
2 January 2017, 08:28
Wet sanding with a little soapy water works on the finer grits, but one aspect I don't like is that the wet polymer takes on a shine, and actually makes it more difficult to see your results. Doing the work dry, you can see the gloss you are working too, and if everything is smooth and scratch free.

No FFL yet, but I've got a meeting in about a week with an FFL in my new area to get set up doing frames there.

BC, your stippling is out-fricking-standing! Mine will never compare to yours but thought I would throw up a few pics of some of the stippling I've done anyways. The Smith was done a few years ago, and then reworked with the bit I did up myself which I use for all my stuff now. I ended up selling the Smith and picked up a lightly used G23C that I did a decent amount of modifying to get to my liking (candle method on backstrap, magwell scallops, undercut, etc etc). I would love to be doing some stippling now but deployed so don't have the means to do so. Once I get home, I'm going to pick up a G19 to play around with and I've got a soldier of mine that I'll be doing up her G19 on after she fondled my G23C and fell in love with it.
I am looking for some tips though on recessed borders if anyone can chime in on techniques used. I've surfed through this thread and various other sites but no one has given any straightforward advice. Between here and IG all the rough frame pics looks like there is a distinct border made (straight edge/razor blade and some sort of bit with soldering iron) and then a small amount of dremeling/sanding to get the recessed look. Am I getting close? I know my skills are no where near aesthetically close to some here but I can't wait to start back at it again and try to refine my skills. Thanks in advance!

That is sexy AF. The only thing i'd want done differently is complete removal of the finger grooves on the front strap. Also, on the Gen 4 Glocks, is your stipple job compatible with the interchangeable back straps? I ask because i'm partial to the larger back strap with the beaver tail. Of course, i'd want you to work your magic on the beaver tail back strap as well...

As long as I've got the backstraps to work with I can make them compatible.
I've decided I kinda like the stock gen4 frames more than the stock gen3's but I still reduced the finger grooves on this one.

BC,

I masked off an area, and that's a light coat of Bed Liner. When I filed down the checkering, I got into the smooth area and it didn't completely sand back out, so a (what I thought was) a clean way to fix it, and functional. Like my 6.8 mags. The plastic overall does have a shine to it, and you notice it quite a bit when shooting as the top of the slide (which is a plastic cover) has a glare to it and ghosts out the front sight at times.

You are familiar with the sub compact kind eh?

With or without pinky extension? The black & tan looks good.

I set down the chainsaw pattern about a year and a half ago. Finally picked it back up with all the lessons I've learned since.

Between the fishnet and the chainsaw BC, how is the texture as in which is more?

They are both generally smooth to run your fingers over on Glock polymer and they are both devoid of any Velcro or scratchy effects.

The chainsaw is definitely more aggressive though. I'll be putting it on a few more Glock frames here soon.

It’s been awhile since I posted here, but it’s amazing how much my work has evolved since the first post in this thread.

Heh, just looking at the first 4 pages of posts in this thread again. Amazing how we got you started in our own way and now you're a big deal! Hard work pays off. Congrats on your success and continued success.

Yeah, this thread is a pretty interesting chronicle of my growth from the start. I still have people message me occasionally saying they found this thread while browsing the internet and read through the whole thing.

I’m not actually a big deal, but the encouragement I got around here as a developed some skill went a long way to keeping me on track to making something of it eventually.

I know I don’t post on this forum much anymore, but I still have post notifications on so I can lurk.

Not my hand, or my photo, but my work. I know this thread is pretty dead, but it needs some more non-Glock flavored posts.

This one actually has a scaled down version of fishnet applied to it since the frame is so small, it helps balance out the proportions.

Impressive work. How much time do you have to put into a project like that?

It depends a bit on the job. My first few Glock frames took up to 30 hours, but I knock most stuff out in under a work day now.

I don’t think I’ll ever quite reach perfection. Honestly, I don’t ever want to believe that I have.

That would leave no room for improvement, and when that stops, the work couldn’t help but become stale.
