As I'm sure most of you can tell, grip stippling is kinda my thing. I enjoy it, and do it a lot. I also like showing off my work, so rather than cluttering up the other threads for accessories, with photographs focusing on stippling work, (rather than the parts themselves) I decided that a picture thread is a good alternative. I'll be posting my own work but I'd be happy to see other peoples stippled items. Professional or personal work.

These are pieces I've turned out in the past couple days.
Troy 10 Round BattleMag with Umbrella Corp logo and stippling added to the original grip pattern.

Thanks for the positive feedback everyone! Surprisingly, I hardly need patience to do this kind of work. Its just one of those things that I passionately enjoy so time flies when I'm working on it. This playlist has been my companion for the past couple days while I work.

All together its a great recipe for getting some good thinking in too.

Battle Cock
11 April 2014, 01:40
I don't have an FFL so I can't accept payment for working on any poly framed handguns. (Its considered gunsmithing because it entails modifying the serialized "firearm" part) I don't own a Glock either. I did do an airsoft Glock awhile back which I was very pleased with though. And I've got a couple friends who want me to do their glocks in the near future. (which I can do so long as I don't charge them for it)

Do you press and drag for that effect or do you used an elongated tip? I'm guessing the latter.

I walked around all day carrying this grip bare handed. It felt great in my hand. Slapped it on the lower and since I wear gloves when shooting put on a pair of setwear stealth gloves. Gripped and regripped it. It sticks to the gloves like glue but isn't harsh at all on the bare hand.

Nothing too special here. I couldn't wait for Joey to be freed up so I just grabbed a cheap iron I had in the drawer and went to town. I didn't practice; just went all in. My only relief was that if I messed it up, the grip panels are cheaply replaceable.

I just used the sharpest point on a cheap soildering iron. I had been using one that took multiple inserts, but when it finally died I snagged a new one at Wal-Mart. Problem was the new one didn't accept other tips and was built so cheaply that the handle got too hot to hold. Ended up returning it. Just some things to watch for when you go shopping...

Can you guys post up ( in here or another thread) what soldering guns/wood burners your using and tips..

His seems to burn really hot and melts really quick...

Here's the pen I use...
http://www.amazon.com/Walnut-Hollow-Creative-Woodburner-Value/dp/B000VRTG8Y/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1403592703&sr=8-1&keywords=woodburning+pen

...and the tip I stipple with
http://www.amazon.com/Creative-Woodburning-Special-Technique-Point-Mini/dp/B000Y3F8N2/ref=sr_1_4?s=arts-crafts&ie=UTF8&qid=1403593040&sr=1-4&keywords=mini+flow

A very light touch works for me. One odd thing I've noticed when I touch the tip to the PMAG I get a noticeable "creak" sound as the polymer instantly melts.

Thanks for the info and links fellas...

I like to do/build shit myself if i can, thats how it is when building cars/houses whatever.

Also started playing around with kydex and so many things can be done and colors/patterns, etc..Just made a cheek riser for my savage rifle and it turned out great...Really thinking about building a little setup and doing some holsters ...someday..

Anyways...carry on..

I am no artist, and definitely do not claim to be good at it but I do stipple my own stuff. I will be sending a stock for an upcoming Remington 870 project to BC to have a logo put on it. Here is my MFT grip for my NTD build I have going on right now.

http://www.computalotapus.com/images/mft-stipple.jpg

Btw, how do you like the MFT grip. im looking/deciding on a grip for my upcoming pistol build and was looking originally at the K2 , as i want a more vertical grip, and wasnt sure how they compared to magpuls or others? Ive only ever used magpul grips.

I also mess around with Kydex. Started making some holsters and mag carriers.

But to answer your question, I am not sure yet. I have only used Magpul MOE grips and the standard A2 grips. It feels thicker in my hand and I am not sure if I like it or not. When it is attached to the lower I get better and more consistent trigger finger placement.

I am gonna have to wait till the build is done to run some drills before I can give you a solid report.

Since you've used the MOE and A2 grips, is the MFT more vertical?
I've been himming and hawing about ordering a new grip too (K2) and didn't know about this one. If it's of the more vertical flavor it looks nice.

Good job on the stippling too. I like it.

I personally don't feel that it is that much more vertical and looking at it, it doesn't look to be that much more vertical. It feels different that is for sure. I will have to finish the build and run some drills with it for awhile to have an honest opinion about it.

Here is a quick pic of the three lowers we have:
Top: S&W M&P 15 with MOE grip
Middle: Umbrella Corp with Hogue Overmold grip
Bottom: Northtech Defense with MFT grip

I really wish Hogue would come out with an AR grip with the same angle as their AK grip. I love their AK grip.

I worked the trigger guard undercut a little more and evened out the front and the back, but I think tomorrow I'm going to get some rough grit sandpaper, staple it to a piece of wood and even everything out 100%. That being said, I'm pretty happy with the way the project came out. Makes a surprisingly big difference in how the frame feels in my hand.

Now I just need some high-speed milling on the slide :P

I finally worked up the nerve to mod the grip on my M40. I wish I had done it sooner. The front and back strap were slick in my opinion. Bought a wood burning kit at Hobby Lobby that had adjustable heat. It worked great.

BC - for stippling, do you sand it down at all (or in some form smooth it out)? So it's not so pokey and more smooth? If so, what grit?

Battle Cock
2 September 2014, 11:39
If an item is already heavily textured then I tend to smooth it out before adding texture. However, consistent ("smooth") texture comes most strongly from technique.

I started stippling my pmags and that went pretty well, I decided to do one of my pistols so I started out on my old beat up xd and there is a major difference in the hardness from magpul products to polymer framed pistols!! First couple jabs on the xd went like "oh shit" then since I started I had to finish it but it ended up not terrible but it wasn't anything I'd brag about. Then after a few more magpul things, I stippled my glock 31 and it turned out pretty damn decent if I say so myself. Planning on doing a little more to it, but since I have an autistic 7yo that likes to help, I've been putting it off for the sake of keeping it looking like a semi-pro did it. It's no battlecock, but not too shabby. Will post some pics up tomorrow.

AaronP220 man I have not gotten the nerve up to do that yet to our glock plus I think my wife would kill me as she doesn't like the feel of stippling. You rocked that, nice trigger guard take-up and good even job on finger swell reduction on top of that clean stipple job.

AaronP220
13 October 2014, 07:48
Thanks! The wife wasn't too thrilled I was sitting in there sanding the hell out of the Glock but she was surpsed with the end result and I was too. I did make a mistake and stipple the trigger guard under-cut. After some hand time I went in and opened it up even more and removed the stippling from that area and added some to the underside of the trigger guard. The thing is LOCKED into my hands now. As far as the stippling goes it's a long, BORING job. I really tried to keep from getting the "pattern" look with the stippling, even though I was going one row at a time. It took some time and some playing around to get it to look like what I wanted but I'm pretty happy with the job. Thanks for the compliments!

The stippling feels close to a rough 15-20 LPI checkering. Its definately sharp right now, it will be interesting to see how it feels after a year.

Almost two years ago now, I did my glock in a similar way to the one Battle Cock posted. The texture has mellowed out a lot since then. like going from 300 grit sandpaper to 800.

Yeah, stippling does tend to form fit a bit. If your texture feels too aggressive and you don't want to wait then you can "sand" it with a hard smooth object and light pressure to take some of the edge off.

Grab some pmags and get a feel for it on those first. When I started out I got a bunch of a2 grips from my local gunsmith that were left over from parts kits from his various builds. Those taught me a lot about controlling the thermal side of stippling.

I'm working on perfecting the much sought after "velvet" texture and various grip modifications.

Pyzik has been posting on FB about stippling handguns, it inspired me to crank out this little beauty. It was an exploratory job experimenting with a dual undercut and a reduced size Boresite style mag release scallop. About 22 hours of labor were required to finish it.
I'll get her in front of a camera for a real photoshoot this weekend but this iPhone photo is good enough to share for now.

Thanks guys! I'm getting to the time of year when I can take the time to focus on this particular art form, so I plan to take advantage of it.

Some of you may remember pictures of my G23 that I stippled awhile back. Well, I completely reworked it, removing the finger grooves, retexturing, and applying many other grip modifications. Here's a small taste of it with a shirt I would never wear while carrying it.

Dayum.

I'm not entirely satisfied with the way that shoot came out. But I am am more than satisfied with the stippling. I'd say I've perfected the velvet texture, and its certainly some of my best work so far.

I second that. My G19s need that treatment in a bad way.

My first ever, with some early photography,
http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc43/lobacha/Stippling/IMG_1950_zpskrp9bcxf.jpg~original (http://s212.photobucket.com/user/lobacha/media/Stippling/IMG_1950_zpskrp9bcxf.jpg.html)

I was digging through my pictures and I found this too. Its early work, so my lines weren't as clean as they are now but I was an ambitious little bugger to even take on this project. that grid wraps seamlessly around the entire magazine. it has no beginning or end. but once i finished, I swore I would never do it again.

Nope. I spent about 14 hours laying out and stippling that design. Most people don't even put 6 hours into a handgun frame texture job.
