Upon looking at the new Magpul's M-LOK backing piece I thought that it looks like the backing piece for Geissele's Surefire Scout light mounting kit.

This may be true since M-LOK was first shown on the MK8 and that Scout mounting kit has been out for some time now. Maybe Geissele came up with M-LOK but didn't want to call it G-LOCK.
