Update 3: MOCK TEST FOR 16"

Alright, so found some time tonight to do a quick mock up of the 16" build and, WOW, is all I got to say.

Do not worry, the AFG was just laying around and grabbed it for the mock up shoot.

Update 4: Dimple your nipple with a side of cognac....

Under BC98 recommendation of using Rainier Arms BRDE Dimpling Jig, this stuff is definitely worth its weight in gold. Used titanium drill bit for the dimpling, why? I don't know, because I'm a chemist and we love Ti. :P
Since it's QPQ/Melonite, elbow grease was used along with CLP for lube. Stuff works.

Finally, have both fully assembled! There are still a few tweaking to do, such as FSB and RSB. The pistol comp may end up switching to something else.....Still debating on the AFG on the pistol, it definitely feels excellent with, considering the pistol size, but does add a few ounces of weight to the overall gun. Gonna need to run through a few courses with the pistol to test the need for an AFG.

Nonetheless, these two builds have been exciting and I have learned much along the way. From dimpling to proper barrel nut torquing. Thanks again to the sponsors, wevo and UW77 for the Fortis rail!!

Sound like two quality builds coming!

For a pistol build I'd be hard pressed not to use the new rainier force rail. I think when I do my pistol, I'm gonna be using a 10.5" barrel and KX5 inside a 12" force.

Sidebar: envious of your parts piles. I do love watching the boxes stack up. All my boxes were disposed of this weekend after I assembled my rifle.

Funny you said that, I looked into it but they didn't offer a 10" rail :( THEN AGAIN, I could jack your idea and do the KX5 with a 12" rail lol my LEO buddy is building me a 7.5" pistol and all that's left on that one is a comp (in progress way before I began to start assembling my own. I guess I can thank him for getting me involve in the building process that I am now building my own). So I can reserve the mini rmc for that one and get the kx5, :P, I guess win win? lol

I know it's not all about aesthetics, but that big old KX5 sticking out the front of a pistol sure does look good. And I wouldn't be opposed to you taking my idea. I'm sure I'm not the only one with that combo in mind.

I choose strike industries because of my previous purchase from them. For one, they are produced in Taiwan, HOWEVER, with high standards and QC. With that comes the price. It hard to compete with their prices at the same time, expect high quality material, workmanship and precision. Being these two builds as a beater and high use guns, I cannot justify spending 80 dollars for an awesome AXTS Raptor charging handle that sits on my CMT, it's not practical enough. Even then, I would still consider using Strike Industries product on my higher end builds because they are really worth it and the following holds true, "You get AAAAA helll lot more for your bucks!!" One of the many pro's to being manufactured overseas. Don't get me wrong, I support U.S made products, but sometimes you have to be a bit more conscientious in terms of costs and materials.

TBH, it's very hard to justify that they make lowend knockoff products, because they really don't. Their colors (i.e FDE, OD etc) may have opposition there, but I do not know since I rock mainly BLACK. I've own several of their VFGs and AFGs and they are top notch in precision, and quality.

Again, these are solely my opinion and thoughts about the company and have yet to be disappointed by them.

If your gonna use a KX5 then definitely the 12", anything shorter then use the 10". 10.5" barrel with KX5 and 12" rail sounds nice.

Sorry gents, been busy these past couple of days. working 18 hour/day 7days a week took a toll on me this entire week. Had zero motivation to do anything other than to crawl into bed after I got home. Once again, working two full time jobs puts a huge amount of pressure both physically and mentally.

Anywho, got the rest of the parts to finish assembling the 16" build, but it's gonna be a bit before I can actually start "screwing" things together for it, once again, my work life sucks. lol

Only thing left for the pistol is the rail and muzzle device (which I think I've narrowed it down, but I won't say much :P )

That's no excuse, ever heard of PED's? When you're on your last leg PED's are there for you. Just kidding though I hate working a lot but my wife says the girls need swim lessons. So since you're tired box up your stuff and send it my way.[BD]

Swim lessons...ha! My dad tied me off to a pair of waterskis behind the boat and that was that.

Very similar story to what I told my wife, had little to no effect. These lessons are really cutting into my SBR build, but at least I got my gen 3 lower yesterday.

Curious how did you attach the gas block?

Set screw. pin or?

Just curious as i have a melonited/nitrided aero barrel also and thought i heard these coatings make it hard to drill, or maybe it was something else, some one help me if im close ..lol

Random question, should I go ahead and install the kns antiroll pins?

Random question, should I go ahead and install the kns antiroll pins?

FWIW, mine didn't work. They look good, but for some reason when I tightened them down the trigger pin would swell in the center and the disconnector wouldn't rock on the pin properly. Gun would fire the first round then not lock the hammer back. Your mileage may vary. Just my experience with them.

I have all of my gas blocks pinned and dimpled. At the very least you should have it dimpled. You're right, the nitride coatings make some of these drilled impossible without the right jig and drill bit. I would not trust a gas block that's just screwed in. Range use only, ok.

I have this question into my guy at Aero, so I'll update it.

As for the KNS pins. I think they're a waste of money, return them if you can. Unless you're using a F/A lower, then maybe I'd use'em.

How do I go about dimpling the barrel? It came from ap undimpled. I did as why and they said the coating makes it very difficult to dimple :/

Fair enough on the kns pins lol

Im with UW, atleast have it dimpled for the set screws or better yet as said have the block pinned. I have time to decide how i will do mine, but very least barrel dimpled with jig and set screws securely in place, or pinned, i have setups with both and no problems yet.

BRDE dimpling jig. Got mine from Rainier and it's been worth its weight in gold. Have even done one melonited barrel.

I dimpled a cheap barrel with a milling machine a while back. Not too hard, just measure twice, cut once as the old saying goes [:)]

Nevermind, the brde jig looks legit. Gonna order one, setting the project another 2 weeks back (still have yet to decide on the pistol lol)

Haha...sorry was late when ui replied..but looks like others got to it, pretty much a jig as mentioned or a gunsmith that is trustworthy.

Curious, when you drilled into the melonite barrel, seem to be harder on the bit then usual ? or?

Definitely harder than the other barrels (standard parkerized & one stainless). The bit took longer to cut in and I didn't end up drilling the dimples quite as deep.

Hahahaha, yes. Lolololol it's fairly common rail and pick will soon follow. I can say I decided on a 10" rail instead of a 12" with kx5 mainly because I did tell myself these two were going to be a mid range price ar's....so can't drop 125 bucks on a brake plus rails.

You should check out ALG's rails. Here's a link to the new M-LOK version:

13" is $115 and 10" is $100.

I contacted Aero, and they confirmed none of their barrels are dimpled for set screws. If anyone else buys a complete upper from them vs a bare barrel, Aero uses knurled set screws and rocksett with low-pro gas blocks. So far they have said they've had no issues.

Obviously it's preferable to have it dimpled from the manufacturer as they would have it finished after dimpling and no bare metal would be exposed, but looks like you did a pretty good job doing it yourself.

And a huge shout out to you for convincing me otherwise. Obviously I'm still in the platform learning phase lol.

But yeah, surprisingly it wasn't that bad to drill. Just have some mismatched sized dimples lol

Any idea what I can do to cover up the bare metal?

Haven't shot it yet, been slumped with work. Planning on using strict 62g ammo.

The mini comp well be swapped out for a strike industries cookie cutter comp and the mini well be donated to my 7" pistol build which will be I'm my hands in s couple days.

As far as optics, haven't decided yet add I still need to get the mbuis.
