Item Installed: Rear Back Up Iron Sight (BUIS)

Purpose of Item: Iron sights have been supplemented by a broad variety of optics, both electronic and magnified. However, any serious weapon needs to retain some form of Back Up Iron Sight (BUIS) in case of optic failure. Anyone who has had an optic failure in a real world event becomes semi-religious in their convictions, or at least I have.

Back Up Iron Sights come in two main styles. The first is the type that folds. This allows the end user to see over the unit, though it requires the user to deploy the BUIS in event of primary optic failure. The second type is a fixed rear sight. This style is obviously quicker to use if the primary optic fails, though it does tend to require a little more training to see "through" the fixed sight.

Tools Needed: A variety of fastening methods are used, tools needed may be an allen head wrench, a flat head screwdriver, or coin.

Items Included: Most BUIS will require a tool to install, this is usually a requirement that the installer/ owner will need to produce.

ARMS

The ARMS 40 family has several different variants. The ARMS 40L shown below is the basic low profile BUIS. It has two different apertures, and is under constant spring tension. To raise the sight into position, you pull back on the release bracket (located on the right side). The internal spring launches it into position, and holds it in place through spring tension. To retract the unit, press rearward on the sight body, and thumb the release bracket back back into place.

The PRI BUIS shown below has two different apertures. It is raised into place manually, and locks into position. It is retracted by pressing the release button, and pulling the sight body flat against the receiver.

GG&G

The GG&G BUIS is released via a push button located on the left side of the BUIS body. This model uses a standard dual aperture. GG&G also has an older sight body which looks similar, but is not spring activated. The easiest way to tell the difference is the lack of the push button on that sight body.

YHM

The YHM BUIS is a basic unit that has a cost of roughly half that of many other BUIS. It is manually raised and lowered. It locks into position, and to retract the sight, you press down on the button, then fold it flat.

NOTE- In this picture, the side clamp of the YHM BUIS is not fully engaged into the side of the upper receiver. This is not an issue with the BUIS. I borrowed the BUIS for the pictures, and didn't tighten it down enough to lock it in position.

C4 Diopter HK Style Iron Sights

The C4 Diopter HK Style Iron Sight is a non-folding rear BUIS that replicates the rear sight of the HK MP5. It has 4 different apertures, with the fourth being a notched "V" sight. This BUIS is attached to the rail with a phillips head screw, and loctite would be a good method of helping to keep it fastened tightly.

Midwest Industries

The MidWest Industries BUIS is manually raised and locked into position. The button on the left side releases the lock, and allows for the unit to be folded back into its flat/ stowed position. The standard A2 aperture and adjustment knob should be familiar to most shooters. The MI BUIS attaches to the rail via an allen head screw, and as with all other BUIS, loctite or a similar thread locker should be used to prevent it from loosening.

CAR-15/M4 360° HK STYLE FLIP-UP SIGHTS

The Brownells folding rear BUIS replicates the HK stlye sights. There are individual settings for 100, 200, and 300 yards, as well as a larger "combat" style aperture. A large attachment nut on the side allows for secure adjustment with a coin, blade, or wrench.

I'll update this with similar pictures to the others as soon as I get a chance.

Yankee Hill Machine has released a new line of spring loaded BUIS. These sights are raised by pressing a button on the left side of the sight, and are spring driven into their locked upright position. Lowering the sights requires the user to press the button, and fold the sights back into their stowed position.

The rear sight uses a standard M16 aperture.
