I've been thinking about getting an AK but I don't know the first thing about them other than there's a lot of different makes and models

I can't see spending that much on a gun i'm going to be exclusively running cheap steel cased ammo out of. The cheaper ones (at least the ones i've looked at) don't have basic things like chrome-lined barrels. Maybe i'm being too picky lol. Maybe when Kalashnikov Concern starts building guns stateside there will be more options and prices will come down.

I believe there are AK manufacturers starting to build here in the U.S. As a work around Obama's import ban. I could be wrong though.

I believe you're correct. Since Kalashnikov Concern was specifically targeted by that ban, i think it'd be especially fun to own one of their guns made in the USA. :P

None of that stuff matters with an AK. An AK is a totally different weapons platform. You can bury it in the sand and then throw it in a lake for a week then bury it in sand again... dust it off some and it will still work.

I have a Romanian AK with a couple goodies on there. The absolute best thing I ever did for my AK is to replace the back site with a ghost ring.

I have a quad rail up front (with covers) and a telescoping stock on mine and an after market grip...it's heavier than my AR but its fun as hell to shoot!!

Nice! I've heard a lot of people say that. My VZ won't take AK parts but it's still an absolute blast to shoot just as much as an AK.

I bought an AK several years ago on a whim. I was thinking that I might want an AR (at the time) and I might want this or that... then a guy made me an offer I couldn't refuse. His wife just had a baby and he was needing some cash so he made me a deal. I didn't hand pick my AK like I did the whole AR thing. But seriously, for just a plain old fun gun... it just makes me smile.

Also with an AK you can shoot for really cheap. It's designed to take cheap steel ammo. I just blast away on that thing. Now though I am having a serious affair with my AR. LOL

They are two entirely different animals.

i read an article that said the company that imports from russia is involved in the US made AK thing but not the parent company in russia. so really its an all new company.

I had a really nice Zastava Yugo M70AB2 under folder. It had an RPK trunion, milled receiver, low round count......it was a solid rifle but it just wasn't my thing. I had purchased it in 2009 for about $350 and sold it last year for around $600. The AK platform just isn't my thing

I've always thought of the AR vs AK thing in turns of cars.

The AR15 is more like a Mustang or a Camaro. Lots of available parts, very easy to refine. Lots of fun to drive fast.

The AK would be a monster truck. Just plan brute force, not all that refined but a load of fun to watch and probably to drive.
