View Full Version : Mag Pouches (Recommendaions)

My chest rig is dying a slow death, and I want to go to a (in my opinion) faster and more efficient (less moves) with movement belt rig.

I already have a new decent range belt, 1.75 inches and looking for a two, or even better 3 mag pouch for it. I'm wondering about Kydex mag holders, but am not sure how securely that they hold 30 round loaded magazines. Or even a recommendation for soft sided pouches. Looking for something that can take more abuse than I can dish out.

Like I said I'll consider both, but I could use an education on the Kydex AR mag holders. Thanks, all.

HSGI tacos simple yet effective. Make them double mag pouches and they will hold your favorite pistols mags as well.

If I wear a chest rig, my speed reload is a ITW FastMag on my left hip; that or most kydex AR mags pouches will work for your speed reload. I like the FastMag since it can be used with any AR or AK mags. Mine have been beat to death and still work well and retain the mags securely.

I have been using more and more a HSGI/Costa thigh rig. If I use that, I don't use the FastMag. The built-in Tacos work really well by themselves.

I have been using mag pouches from Ready Tactical, pistol and rifle, for probably close to 10 years. I've recommended them for that entire time, and had literally dozens of fellow shooters buy them based on my recommendation. For a pouch that is relatively inexpensive, goes on easily enough, resists coming off until you want it to, works with Pmags and GI mags, and is tension adjustable with a hair dryer, they are fantastic. There is another company, Kytac or something, making similar pouches but I find that I don't like them as much due to sharper edges and just an overall reduced attention to detail.

Will check them out, thanks. Rob_s, it appears that SKD is out for now, will keep checking to see when they get some in. Thanks, they look good. I'm assuming they can handle more acrobatics than I'm capable of giving.
Will check "taco's" and fastmags also.

Thanks again.

I like Fastmags and use them on my belt, but I find that I can't get them side-by-side on my chest rig. I've been using the Emdom pouches. They work well enough, after cutting away the elastic retention. If I were doing it over, I'd probably go with the Eagle FBs or the Tacos.

I liked the fastmags I had (have? Probably in a bin somewhere...) but could never really get them to sit right on the belt, regardless of the parts and pieces I tried. Worked well on the molle battle belts, however. As did the Tacos.

I really miss the Eagle FBs for molle attachment. Are they even still in business? Didn't they get bought by one of the conglomos?

Actually, I think I'd like to try the Ready Tactical (2 of them) on my belt. Then I could try the HSGI/Costa thigh rig, with it. Need to pay for the parts to finish my AR 10, before the Costa Rig, though. Wheh! decisions, decisions....Really would like to chuck the chest rig all together, and get something like a Tactical Taylor of Ghost bag to carry emergency tactical gear and emergency beer (when guns and ammo are put away) or a bottle of water.[:D] Thanks for all the help.

The only time I use a chest rig is at carbine courses, where I might need up to 6 magazines while on the line shooting. Mine has 4 mag pouches on it. At pistol coourses I just put a couple of Fastmags on my belt along with a couple of pistol mags and a dump pouch.

I have one from Bravo Concealment (http://www.bravoconcealment.com/products/ar-15-m4-magazine-pouch) that I use alot. As Jeff from Armed Dynamics says it has a "F you level of retention", it's not going anywhere until you want it to. The only downside I see it's only molded for a PMAG or GI and their wait times are a bit long.

HSGI tacos give lots of options and flexibility which is nice. I have them on my battle belt and they work well with AR and AK. Also have them with the pistol pouches for double and single mags works the same and dont have to move the pouches or change them.

Kydex mag holders have retention that's easily adjusted with a little touch of a heat gun. I've made many. They work well if you only need one or maybe two on a belt. I haven't yet found a good way to put together a dual mag pouch in my little home-Kydex operation.

I really liked mine as well, and have a couple for Glock and AR mags. I haven't been using them much lately as I've been running a G-Code set up on a belt.

Apparently Eagle is mostly out of the picture now, but here's a recommendation for a possible replacement by someone who was also a fan (Tim Lau):

Does anyone know if SKD is the only vendor for the Ready Tactical mag pouches? I've googled and binged myself silly and cannot locate them anywhere else.?? They do have the .308 available but nothing in 5.56, in stock.

Thanks,

Sure will. Also, Rob_s has a pretty good video describing them, in this thread. I'm just hoping that retention is tight with a full mag.

I have the Costa leg rig very secure. ran it in a few "tactical matches". bailing out of vehicles running, up and down ladders, and still every bit as snug as when I stuck um in there. HSGI has a couple different versions now as well if you need more rifle mags. quite a few of the guys at the range had tacos on their kits (match is held near Ft. Bragg in NC so lot of active duty guys shoot it) and those tacos fit anything you put in there. (saw a guy shove his G19 in there as a demo)

I think the HSGI/Costa thigh rig might be my next investment after I finish getting my AR-10 transformed.

In my opinion the Esstac KYWIs are the best there is, but they are pricey. Great retention, speed and longevity. I only like HSGI Tacos for rigs where I might choose to run AK mags out of them as well as my usual AR mags. I don't particularly like open top mag pouches with elastic bands around them for retention because it is a mega butt pain to re-insert mags one-handed, and the elastic will eventually wear out and is typically not replaceable. I don't like mag pouches with flaps or bungee over the opening for retention either.

Got the Ready Tactical (well actually several days ago) AR magazine pouches and had a chance yesterday to wring them out. I don't know how to shoot video with my camera, or I would have, but I have to say I put them through their paces, as far as having loaded magazines in a "pouch" Some of my "torture" tests even border on ludicrous as far as retention, and much more than I'll ever practically need. Weird thing is when you go to pull them out, they don't snag or hang, they come out smoothly.

You can adjust the tension with a hair dryer or heat gun, but I didn't need either. However, if after an initial break in period, the loosen a bit, I know I can very easily go back and tweak them a bit. I also use the "beer can" grip and everything seemed smooth and natural.

I have to give credit where credit is due, to forum member Rob_s for the recommendation. Also, come to think of it, at the top of this thread he does have a link to a video that he shot, that pretty much tells you what you would need to know.

I just saw them on Stickman's FB page, and apparently they do come in black. Might want to visit, because they are giving some away. I'd love to win about six of those!. Look like they're ready for hard core usage, probably way more than your average shooter is going to put them through.

And thanks, UWone77, for the shameless plug....[:D]

The limitless look bulky to me,presumably due to the QD functionality?

Also, just once I'd like to see a video for a gun product with regular dudes wearing jeans and a t-shirt and a normal belt. I realize that isn't the target market here, just something I thought of after watching yet another Multicam-ridden vid.

Which goes bring to mind, will these pouches work on a regular belt? It almost looks like enough travel could be built into the mechanism to make it close down to a 1.75" or 1.5" belt.

Rob_s these pictures might help change your mind. When seen by themselves the OPFORs do appear to be a bit bulky but when you compare them side by side with other magazine carry options you're get a whole new perspective.
https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0670/9907/files/OPFOR-Profile-3WE.jpg?311
Here you see the OPFOR mounted along side an HSGI TACO on their MOLLE drop leg panel.

https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0670/9907/files/OPFOR-Profile-1WE.jpg?311
This is that same configuration in profile. Note you can see the top of the TACO over the OPFOR.

https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0670/9907/files/OPFOR-Profile-2WE.jpg?311
Now here is the same shot just in reverse. Note that the TACO completely obscures the OPFOR that's behind it.

Just to be clear, we shot the profile shots from a tripod and we made sure the drop leg was positioned the exact distance from the lens in both shots.

We hope that clears up the issue about the size of the OPFOR.

It is not intended to replace all the "long-term storage" pouches out there but is the go-to for speed reloads and none can take a beating like this video shows. It fits any belt up to 2" and MOLLE/PALS webbing without any extra parts. Super low profile.

Send me a PM for a coupon code if you are interested. Thanks.
