what do u guys all prefer? i know with the 8 rounders you obviously get that 1 extra round but at about $30 a piece you can by 4 7 rounder mags. do the top manufactorer (chip, wilson, mec-gar) preform the same as the 7 rounders?

A few years back, I was part of a team which did testing on 1911 magazines. There was an easy 50k rounds put through various 1911 mags. Some of it was on known good guns, others were ones that were a little more temperamental, and regardless of what 1911 or ammunition was used, the Wilson Combat 47D series magazine won out.

I have NOT done any similar testing with their 8 round mag, but in thwe world of 7 rounders, Wilson is the standard in my mind.

I have found the Wilson 47 D's to be the best while the Chip M's Shooting Star magazines also perform very well with my various 1911 platforms

I like the 47D the best

other good mags i've used a lot are CMC, Novak and Metalform/Colt.

my least favorite are Para-Ord and ProMag. they go directly in the trash.

I have a couple of wilson 8 rd mags ,for 3 years with no problem, shot in 5 different 1911 platforms.
the rest of my mags are 47D 7 rd, with 2 Ed Brown 7 rd'ers they have work flawless with around 1100 or so, but when i buy mags wilson is the way to go.

The Wilson magazines have been most reliable in my 1911's. I have 7 rd. Wilson magazines, and a 10 rd. Wilson, all work just fine.

I have 15 chip mccormick mags for my 3 Kimbers, I have 20 or so old beat to hell Army issue .45 7 round mags and about 6 47D's. I shoot much more then average and have yet to have one of my mags fail me. I rarely clean them, once every 2 years or so, and I have never replaced a spring or a follower in any of them. I don't deburr, I don't lube and they get dropped in training ALL the time in the ALL conditions that the northwest has to offer.

I am still using 6 AR-15 mags that Uncle Sugar gave me in 1986 with no replacement of parts and NO CARE given to them at all. They work with out fail each and every time I use them, also they have remained loaded springs compressed for years, and still shoot a full 30 rounds each time. Ask 10 "Pro" gun writers or 10 "Pro" shooters what one should do for care of mags or what is the best mag out there and you"ll get more answers then you have people around you being asked.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a gear whore and care for my stuff as if it is a religion, but all this hype about mag failure over the years has been blown wayyyy out of proportion.

I admire your luck, and wish I had similar results. However, I don't, and a real life on duty malfunction, along with multiple LEO and MIL mag training experiences have shown me that its worth upgrading any of my mags that are in doubt (green or black followers have both given me problems). I will admit that the above comments are geared towards the M16 platform, though my 1911 departmental testing has showed a large difference between various magazines. With the 1911 mags we tested, it was under controlled conditions, and I was shooting 800-1300+ rounds a day for a couple months for part of a larger test.
