Smith - how do you like the upper so far? I bet it feels sleek to the touch. By the way - that's a nice addition of the punisher dust cover.

The finish feels almost like satin. It's really nice and smooth. I like the silver grey color a lot also. It's going to make the pistol simply look awesome. I suspect that the no matter what bolt carrier I get for it, it's siimply going to glide through. With FDE for the grip that Josh sent me and after I cut down one of the FDE foam pads that Jim sent with the Phase 5 pistol tube, put an FDE handguard on it (Parallax Tactical says they have a couple 9.2" FDE blem rails lying around - so I'll buy one of them). Well, the final pistol is just going to look fantastic. I'm sure it will shoot great too. I was going to buy the barrel next, but I really want one of those Parallax handguards while they still have those couple blem ones available so I think I'll get that first. I know I'll be happier with that than some of the little bit cheaper alternatives. I've asked them to save one for me for a little while until I can afford it. I think the final gun is going to look so good that it will be irrelevant if the FDE parts aren't all exactly the same color. It's going to give the pistol a LOT of character. It's really great to win something, but it's even more astounding to win something you actually need. I fit it to the lower receiver and my wife said "nice, looks like it's almost done". She doesn't quite understand that there's still ~$440 to go!

i need to look in to one of dose charging handles

Thompson
25 October 2014, 12:35
I know that CMT was donating several billet uppers - I think they donated some of each, as voodoo got the UPUR-1; and as you can see I got the UPUR-4. The biggest two differences between the UPUR-1 and UPUR-4 is that the UPUR-4 is more of a minimalist approach - no shell deflector and no forward assist as you see in the pictures.

Very very well machined (but that's obvious since it's a billet upper) - the picatinny rails are also really smooth to the touch - not like the M-4/M-16, which tend to be really sharp; the edges of the UPUR-4 rails have been slightly rounded. The upper came a little dusty from shelf life over at the folks at RA - but otherwise, flawless. CMT has it listed at $138 on their website.

Now, on to the charging handle. It's made by Parabellum Armament; the company currently has two types of charging handles: the ADF (Ambi Dual Function) and the ADO (Ambi Dual Oversized) - in essence the only difference is the size of the latch. Like most other CH's, it's made from 7075 T6 billet, with the level and latches made from 4140 steel. Latches are also large enough that you could use your palm to rack the CH.

One of the neat features (that if I understand correctly) is that the right side latch operates independently of the left side. If you look at some other ambi CH's, such as BCM's Gunfighter and RA's Raptor - the right side latch is interconnected to the left side latch. Haven't had the chance to look at the mechanics behind either, but I'm going to guess that if you somehow break the connection between the left and right latch - you wont be able to use the right side latch. With the ADF/ADO - that's not a problem. (This website shows how the right side latch operates independently from the left: http://www.bpoutfitters.net/Parabellum-Armament-ADO-Model-Charging-Handle-_p_2362.html) Parabellum has it listed on their website for $80.

Nice Thompson and that charging handle was a nice addition as a package too! You gotta admit though, you really opened yourself up to the ribbing by posting a picture of a box LOL

I also noted that from Stick's original post about the CMT donation that all the uppers weren't the same so I've been interested to see what the differences are between them. Wonder why they machined the two ears for a dust cover? Are there holes there to install a dust cover Thompson? Thanks for posting the pics.

Haha - I suppose so. And yep - you can add a dust cover to the UPUR-4; the UPUR-3 is is the bare bones version - no FA, no dust cover, and no brass deflector. I've got an idea of where I want to go with this.

UPUR-1 is a standard billet upper. UPUR-2 is a slick side with no FA, but still retains the deflector and dust cover. UPUR-3 is slick side, no FA, no deflector, no dust cover. UPUR-4 is slick side with no FA or deflector, but the option to add a dust cover.

They also offer a UPUR-1A which is the same as the 1 with an oversized ejection port for 458 SOCOM platforms. The 3 and 4 also have the oversized ports, but not the 2.

To me, the UPUR-2 appeals most if the FA isn't desired. I'd like to see a brass deflector on my uppers, but the 2 doesn't have the enlarged port, so if I was going to go 458 I'd need the 1A model. That being said, I LOVE my UPUR-1. Something about the simplicity of these things. No fancy mill work, just a bare bones, good looking, functional set of upper receivers

Nice pictures. If you don't have anything in mind or don't have a preference as to where you want to go with it - perhaps you could go for a "minimalist" themed rifle - since the UPUR-3 is the minimalist version of the four uppers CMT has to offer.

holy hamburgers are those CMT uppers god damn sexy.

Sure are. Love my UPUR-1.

As for what to do with the upper, after building my 18" gun that I built for bench shooting and varmints, I think everyone needs a SPR build. So fun to shoot. Other than that my next vote goes to a pistol. Which I'm currently building.

I have no idea what to build with it. Does anyone have one? What did you build? An AR upper without a dust cover, forward assist and deflector is challenging my Army 11B brain... I am fine with that.

Why does it have to be a "pistol" lower? Does it have to be designated with a pistol roll mark in PA?

No idea what you mean about the age difference..? Here in maryland (some of the most stringent laws in the country) we are only allowed pistols, hbar's and sbr's now. But you can build a pistol out of any lower you want. As long as it can't accept a stock, it's a pistol. Some companies make pistol marked lowers I guess to avoid confusion to anyone who is ignorant of the fact the gun is a "pistol" and not a rifle.

I guess laws could be different in PA though, and I am no lawyer. I really wouldn't think you'd have a problem with using a CMT lower to build a pistol, but don't hold me to it.

I meant that since the lower is, in this case, classified as a pistol - you have to be 21 or older to purchase that lower (just like a handgun). Is this not correct?

I feel your pain brother - first time I went shooting (this past summer actually) was down in MD with my aunt & uncle (big 2A relatives of the family); I've got a friend up here at PSU who lives in MD .... trying to get them to all move back to America.

Just a note with this. A lower receiver is not classified as a pistol - you can build a rifle on a pistol marked lower. It has to do with how the FFL transfers it. Anyone who wants a handgun has to be 21 to buy one. Doesn't matter which state. For long guns the age is 18. The regulation is part of the Gun Control Act of 1968. Title 1 of the GCA prohibits any FFL from selling a firearm to anyone ;

e.less than eighteen years of age for the purchase of a shotgun or rifle

f.less than twenty-one years of age for the purchase of a firearm that is other than a shotgun or rifle

Some states have rules regarding AR lower receivers. In Ca. a buyer in most cases will need to decide if it will be a pistol or a rifle before the FFL will transfer it and many FFL's insist on installing the Ca. legal lower parts kit themselves so that they know it has the 'bullet button' installed. A few states ban AR pistols altogether.

Most FFL's transfer a lower receiver as just that - a receiver. You build what you want from it making sure you follow the law and do not do something like build an illegal SBR. However, a lower receiver 'CAN' be transferred as a long gun. When transferred as a long gun it MUST be built as a rifle. Once built as (or transferred as) a rifle, it can never be legally made into a pistol.

Some manufacturers do have AR receivers that they mark as 'pistol' receivers, however, that is a marketing thing, not a functional issue and it doesn't designate the receiver as a handgun. You can still build a rifle using one. It's just a milspec receiver after all.

It is interesting to note that an AR built as a pistol CAN be legally changed into a rifle configuration and also back to a pistol since it was a pistol to begin with. The rule is "Once a rifle, always a rifle".

Why?

Because I have an entire set of stuff coming and being delivered this week to do a brand new custom build with it :) I won the upper and then proceeded to buy all the rest of the stuff to go with it.

This is my first ever AR build but I am going to try and make Stickman and especially CMT proud :)

Basically yes. I don't think any FFL would transfer it to you as just a receiver if you're under 21. Likely the FBI background check wouldn't approve it either since it 'could' be built into an AR pistol. Also, if you're 19 (for instance) then I doubt a local FFL would simply hold it in his gun safe for you for 2 years. I doubt a month would be a problem. So, it would be best to simply have it transferred as a rifle and build a carbine from it. Then, after you're 21, buy another one to build a pistol from if you want an AR pistol too. No matter which order you do it in you're going to end up wanting both anyway [:)]

AR's aren't all that cheap to build..... especially if you opt for higher cost parts.

You are right they are not that cheap if you opt for the higher cost parts bit the great thing is you don't need to buy all the parts at once. I build my AR's part by part. Usually pick up a part once every paycheck sometimes I have to save a couple paycheck to pick up item that are a little more expensive. Either way its doable.

Per the ATF all receivers MUST be transferred as "other", an 18 year old can NOT buy a receiver from an FFL

It was my understanding that they should all be transferred as other as well, but a few of my local FFL's told me they have never transferred as other, that is until MD stepped in and told them this was the only way they could transfer them. I have 3 AR lowers that were not transferred as other (I'll have to look at my 4473's). They are all rifles, so no laws were broken, but I knew it smelled fishy.

I know there are some FFL's who still transfer them as long guns or hand guns. Keep in mind that ATF decisions are not the actual law, just the ATF's interpretation of the law as it is written. Best thing to do is buy a complete lower if you're 18 that already has a stock on it. Then they have to transfer it as a rifle because of the stock. It is no longer just a receiver. I do know that in Ca. the FFL's won't transfer them as other at least in several sections of the state and require buyers to have the FFL assemble the lower. That may also be a way around it. Have the FFL mount the stock and stake the castle nut. Then he can transfer it as a rifle for sure.

First off..Im curious on this also, i havent played with any of them, they look like they add a little bit of weight, alot, little?

Second...Congrats !!

Haven't weighted it, but my guesstimate would be it adds about 2-3 oz. I only notice the weight when the mag is empty. Have only shot about 60 rounds with it but Goodluck so far, no failures to feed and the bolt has locked back. It says it adds +5 but I could only muscle in an extra 4 rounds on a new mag. will probably be able to get that last round in as the spring wears.

So far so good :D

Nor sure if I won the original M5 set or if they are all the M5E1s. Either way when the process starts to have it transfered to my ffl, I'm going to see if I can kick business their way and add their new hand gaurd. This might turn into a straight out Aero build. My dad has hinted he wouldn't mind something like this, so it may end up his Christmas present.

Hey guys. Thanks. I had a m+m m10 but due to car troubles I had to part ways to help cover the bill. So I'm hoping to pick up another ak sooner or later. I've also tried looking into thread adapters so I could throw it on my ar. But if those all fail then I'll end up looking into finding a ar barrel I can get threaded the 14x1 lh. I may be mistaken but a 308 or 300blk is close to the 7.62x39 caliber?

That's gonna look just fine without a muzzle device.
I read a thread about a guy mounting an AFG directly to keymod without an adapter. I am sure you can pic up some fasteners and do the same with the MLOK and not have that extra thickness with the rail.

Probably gonna want the thickness. My dad has huge hands and this rail is tiny. Another reason I think the 15" will work, he has long arms.

Ride4frnt, what you're doing for you Dad is just simply great. Honestly, I think you'd be better off just getting a new barrel rather than trying to get that one threaded. You have to use a low profile gas block anyway. If you get a new barrel you'll know for sure what the twist is for it too and you'll know it's new. Otherwise you have to take that A2 sight off to change it to the low profile gas block anyway to use the handguard. Add the value of time to do that plus the cost and time of getting the barrel threaded and it's a wash for just buying a new barrel. You can get a decent melonited barrel for $150.

Your Dad must be proud of you Ride4frnt.

Got all that covered. Gas block and tube is in the parts bin. I know this barrel is a 1x7 HBAR. Just a cash and carry bushmaster in maryland about 10 years ago. I may buy a new barrel eventually, and recycle this to a build for myself, since with any new lowers I buy I have to build HBAR, pistol or SBR. And a good buddy of mine has a lathe, so I could get this threaded easy enough.

Its going to look nice. And that text message was funny as hell. Man have I been slacking coming onto this forum.

Teaser of what's coming for my dad. After seeing the rail up next to it I don't think it will look too bad. One day I'll get the barrel threaded, or just buy a new barrel. His magpul furniture will be in the mail today. Still need to procure a magpul mlok rail section and a FDE AFG.

I posted in the Giveaway Discussion that it had arrived, and arrived it did! Turns out I got a not-so-common Parallax Tactical FFSSR 17.5" rail. This is a long, but insanely lightweight rail. It's actually perfect because it helped me make up my mind on my next build. I already have a Recce type build, 16" Match Barrel, ACOG, other goodies, and I was trying to decide what to do for my next build but couldn't quite justify another 16", so I'll happily get to work on an 18" SPR thanks to UWone77, Stickman, and Parallax Tactical!

Here are the pictures I took so far (they don't do this rail justice, and with all the pro photographers here, I'm a little ashamed of my efforts):

I'll be honest, I thought I had won a 15" rail (I am NOT disappointed) and I thought I'd gotten the longest 15" rail in existence, compared to my 12" Rainier/Samson rail:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v74/DownSouthTAS/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zps0f881553.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v74/DownSouthTAS/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zps01dd5daf.jpg

This rail is super light and super slim. Here's it next to the Rainier:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v74/DownSouthTAS/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsfa603dc8.jpg

Judging by the weight increase from the 13" to the 15" versions, I'm guessing it weighs somewhere around 19.5oz but I swear holding it the way it's proportioned it doesn't even feel like a pound. I can't waaaaait to build a rifle around this thing.

Picked up a little sumptin sumptin from my FFL tonight. A box from Aero Precision. The lower and rail came in FDE but the upper was black. Not sure I really care, it'll be up to my father if he wants it to be FDE as well. In that case I can spray it myself. They were even kind enough to send the upper out assembled so I won't even have to dime out on an upper build kit for it. Really grateful to all the awesome folks making this happen. I fully expect to see my father grinning like a little kid come Christmas morning. I'll try and get a photo or two up tomorrow.

So here she is, The M5 lower/M5E1 upper and Rail From Aero Precision. Really glad they let me pay to upgrade to the newer upper and add the rail they are rolling out.
It was funny hearing my FFL's reaction when he pulled the upper out. It has about an 1 1/2" on a standard upper. I think he thought it was a .50 bolt before we unwrapped it.

First off I ended up getting the 15" guard. Thing is amazingly light. So much to the point I may be convinced to go after one of their M4E1 sets.
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m19/Michael_Camo_Lohman/DSC_0198_zps3d0f8e95.jpg

The set looks and feels great, really can't tell from this pic, but the flair on the magwell is nice and wide.
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m19/Michael_Camo_Lohman/DSC_0181_zps53e90365.jpg

The way the rail seats to the upper is great as well. Leaves no gap at all between the rail and upper. Haven't confirmed this yet, but if you look at the forward screw hole you can see the barrel nut thread. I'm thinking that the rail screws will bite on the thread and help prevent any kind of walk out.
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m19/Michael_Camo_Lohman/DSC_0197_zps83e5afa7.jpg

The barrel nut(included) looks like it is designed to be tightened by a standard crescent wrench. Two flats on either side. Not seen a barrel nut designed like this before.
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m19/Michael_Camo_Lohman/DSC_0187_zps4f06091e.jpg

The hole to the far right in this pic is designed to line up the gas tube. It keeps it separate from the barrel nut so you don't have to worry about timing the barrel nut to feed the tube through it. I think it's a clever idea, removes having to worry about over/under torquing the BN to get it aligned.
Also in this pic you can see on the integral rail mount a hole with a set screw. It's a relief hole for the port door rod for install.
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m19/Michael_Camo_Lohman/DSC_0196_zpse6350252.jpg

One other thing I really like about the set is no roll pins. The FA and bolt release are both Allen keys for install, and the trigger guard is already milled into the lower. So no worry about having to drive in pins and potentially marring your finish or breaking a tab. Really like the thought AERO put into this set.

Also wanted to point out that the lower is also short throw safety compatible.

http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m19/Michael_Camo_Lohman/DSC_0201_zps4752b1c8.jpg

Really nice set overall. I will say the finish on the FDE is a little thin. Already marred it once from gentle handling. But i'm pleased as punch. Thanks Again to AERO for donating this set, Congrats again to Stick on his milestone and Thanks to WEVO for hosting and putting up with me.
