I know exactly what you mean. Trouble is, I don't know of any place around me that I can shoot over 100 yards. Even that isn't common.

Ahhh...thats to easy everyone is doing it...lol....go with something different...6mm variants and the 6.5's are where its at....Atleast where im looking for my next bolt gun.....or stay in the 308 realm and do a .260 or 7mm-08 , can make brass out of 308 cases and they have better BC's and are supersonic longer in a apples to apples bullet comparison...

It could just be the mountain dew..and the fact its real late...as im just rambling......... and failed with no pic..as only bolt gun i have at the moment is a fv-sr .22...lol...[BD]

For the price of the ammo I'm a fan of 7mm Rem mag in bolt guns over .308. But if you don't mind to shell out the money .300 Win mag and .338 Lapua are very cool. I've always wanted a rifle in .50 BMG but will probably never own one. But during the last ammo scare 7mm Rem mag was readily available about every where and doesn't run much more than .308.

I say .308 because it would be his first bolt gun. A 7.62x51 bolt action precision rifle is almost right-of-passage in a way.

.260 this, .284 that, .243 blah... There is a solid reason why the military and LEO community sticks with .308. Plenty of ammo, accurate as hell. And if you reload, it's impossible to get it wrong with Varget.

I will second the 7mm Remington Magnum as an excellent round for starter rifle. The .284 projectile has one of the highest ballistic coefficients of any round out there and it's extremely flat shooting even out to extended long range. You can easily kill big game at 1000 meters with a 7RM and the recoil is fairly light for a magnum. The platform is also great to re-barrel later on into a .338 edge which is ballistically the same as a .338 lapua more or less, without the need for an oversized magnum action.

A 308 is a great round, but compared to a 7RM its lacking pretty heavily as far as energy is concerned at extended long range. Both are available readily at big box stores, you will have more projectile options in .30 caliber but I have not had any issues finding .284 projectiles over the last few years.

FBI HRT used 7RM for quite some time and may still use it, its an extremely solid round.

That thing shoots well. I was surprised at how well it shoots crappy ammo. I wished I had known about CZ rifles years ago. I'm told the newer 455;s are even better. I bought as a training anolog for my 308. I have some charts that equate a 22 to a 308 for drop and drift out to 400 simulated for a 308. Its way cheaper to spend a little time with that than my 308 burning match ammo.

Got this rifle on a trade, and honestly I accepted it out of curiosity since I'd read some articles about the rifle and was on my short list of rifles to try and build a "budget" tackdriver. It's a Mossberg MVP 5.56mm, Varmint model, meaning it has a nicer stock with vertical pistol grip and enhanced palm swell and cheek comb, 24" medium contour 1:9 twist barrel. It came with an adjustable trigger I tuned down to a fishing scale 2lbs. Cosmetically, the black and grey-ish laminate stock looks great, as well as the fluting down the length of the barrel. I'm not sold on the spiral fluted bolt: I'd prefer it to be jeweled but I'm more function over fashion so I don't really care at the end of the day. I threw on a Harris bipod, had the barrel threaded by the suppressor company Innovative Arms (I'm local) and threw on my can and a Vortex 6-18x44 AO scope.

I've shot 69gr bullets through 50gr. With 69gr I was getting around 1.25-1.5MOA...not horrible. With 52gr Nosler Custom Comp's over 22.5gr of Reloder10x, this was my 10 shot 100yd string:

My Prairie Dog buddy Geoff on our (year) 2000 trip to Montana. When I had an FFL, I ordered us a matching pair of Remington 40-XB KS rifles in 243 Winchester. I sent two Leupold 8.5x25 Target Turret scopes to Premier Reticule and had them converted to 20x50; shown with a sun shade. Rifles have a 27.5" heavy match stainless barrel. They came with factory targets showing a 3/8" group for each one. We shoot Hornady 75 grain V-Max moly coated bullets over 41 grains of Varget - 3,450 FPS. The loads shoot sub 1/2" out of both rifles. We were taking P-dogs at 600 - 700 yards. The prairie dogs are about the size of a 20 ounce coke bottle. This picture is on the "Four Square Town". The ranchers name their dog towns. This one was 2 miles by 2 miles - "Four Square" Miles - one dog town. The ranchers only asked us to give a count of hits per town; no fees, no license, just fun. We tallied on the towns, and using 223 and 243 we averaged a 39% hit rate - only counting the dogs we could positively confirm as deceased. In two trips (2000 and 2003) we eliminated just over 1,000 prairie dogs. If you run the math, that is a lot of shooting. I know it isn't a nice close-up of the rifle, but thought I would share anyway.

Actually, with moly coated bullets, we had zero signs of pressure. Normal extraction, no flat primers, no smudges around the primers. Bore just ahead of the chamber still looks factory fresh. We took 1K each of 75gr 243 and 55gr 223. Worked the close mounds (out to around 400 yards) with the 223 - or until we shot 100 rounds, then swabbed the bore, put it in the cleaning cradle and ran the 243 until either 100 rounds or distance exceeded our abilities. Then we either finished the cleaning and swapped calibers again, or moved the setup to another location.

Pressure doesn't really burn out barrels, but could be defined as a contributing factor to higher velocities. Pressure is more important to accuracy and preventing catastrophic failure. Heat dude, lots of heat from high velocities is what eats up barrels. I'm with Former11B, and if you keep running them that hot you'll burn those barrels out at <1K rounds.

You're lucky then. Most 6mm run around 3150fps and burn out barrels between 1500-2500.

Thanks. She's a heavy girl...13lbs 3oz loaded and suppressed.

I recently cut the 20" barrel to 16.5" to make it more maneuverable and better balanced with the can. I painted everything using Rustoleum Camo (khaki and earth brown with some forest/drab green) using my tried&true pinestraw method. The suppressor makes it go from a sharp jolt to a soft push with a deep "CHOOMP!"

Since I had the barrel trimmed and re threaded, I was rezeroing it because I also use it for hunting (168gr Nosler Ballistic Tip over 43.6gr RE15) and I wanted to check the zero unsuppressed (setting the knobs to 0/0) and seeing the adjustment needed for any POI shift when adding the can. 6 clicks up and I'm in business

It's an ATACR F1 4-16. I'm by no means a fan of over mag-ing a rifle, but I find 10x at 800 to be a stretch for my eyes. I've tried it on my MK12 and on a full-sized target and it was doable, but having an extra 2 or 4x is nicer, at least for me.

I have a NF 3.5-15 on my SR-25 that I've shot out to 800. Great scope and I've been happy. I think the ATACR is even better. That thing is amazing for it's size and weight. The Mil-R reticle is a little weird at first, but then it starts to make sense. I have found that I can get lost on holds for a potato or two when transitioning to targets at different ranges, only because each main tension isn't labled (it goes by 2), but some more practice would probably solve a lot of that.

Tyrannosaur
23 March 2016, 07:05
Thanks for the info. My eyes as I age haven't been kind. I was looking for a lower profile scope but the 3.5 was on the forefront. I have a 1- 4 nxs and love it but it can only do so much. I'll look at the Atacr now too.
Do you find the mil-r reticle gets lost at higher magnification?

gatordev
23 March 2016, 14:21
Not at all. The sub-tensions are thick enough (maybe just bordering on getting to the point of the max you'd want) that they're very visible. While shooting at 400 on the tripod, I brought the mag down to 5x and everything was still very usable (for my eyes with glasses). I could have held instead of dialing with no issues. Obviously everything is relative to each person's eyes.

A repost for the reticle:

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1609/25818583641_aa5e4164c4_b.jpg

The image in the actual scope is clearer. I took this with a dSLR with a lens that's probably too long to give a realistic brightness/clarity representation (along with image/internet compression), but you get the idea.

What kind of chasis is that? Tell me more about that rifle.

This is a rifle I've been messing with on-and-off for a while. Accurate Ordnance build it out for me using a bunch of parts I had lying around.

- Base action is a Remington 700 AAC-SD
- PTG one-piece fluted bolt w/sako extractor
- Badger 20MOA rail
- Sunny Hill Recoil Lug
- 17" Rock Creek barrel in .308 w/ 1:11.27" twist
- Griffin OTB Brake

The chassis is a KRG folding Whiskey 3. Gen 3 I believe.

I've been using this to try and determine if a compact and light weight bolt gun is something I'm really interested in.

So far I'm pretty positive on the concept. The gun, as you see it configured, with 10 rounds of .308 weighs about 15.5 lbs and shoots to 650 easily. Once I start to push the 650 distance, the groups start to open up and become less predictable. I currently working on finding factory ammunition that performs reliably at +650.

I feel like I'll finalize the concept pretty soon. Hoping to build the final configuration on a Badger M2013 action.

Hornady Superperformance Match 178gr BTHP

Planning on using the rest of my factory ammunition for break-in and getting an initial ballpark for load development on the new action/barrel.

I have a box of 178gr AMAX bullets and I'm interested in seeing how those do when hand loaded.

I was about 1/2 a second off of buying one of these on gunbroker but I backed out of it the last minute. I love the idea of the action but I don't like the idea of having a gun that I couldn't fix if something were to break...so it was a no go. In return though I am doing a 100% Kidd 10/22 build (once I get my act together).... I got the trigger for it for Christmas...

Alamo, I definately have the same concern that you do.

I actually sent PWS an email a few weeks ago because I needed more barrel shims, and I asked them about support for existing owners, into the future. This was their response:

"As for potential future Warranty concerns the Summit is as covered as it has always been and will be until we are no longer in business or the firearm has reached or exceeded its serviceable life."

Its kind of a vague statement but I've had positive experiences with PWS in the past, and I think that in the event of some kind of manufacturer defect, they will try to make things right to the best of their ability.

I'm also not expecting this to really be anything that gets used and abused, and the toggle action is robust and simple enough that it can carry on for a very long time. Hopefully there aren't any major problems. I gave my Dad the first T3 I bought (his first firearm).

Wow. That's good to hear. I wonder what made them quit making them? Just lack of interest or what? I wish they would at least do a run or two a year or something. That would be nice. If they did that I would buy one.

At the time the rumor online was once they are gone they are gone so the email you got is refreshing for sure. It was over priced anyway (gunbroker) so I don't feel too bad about it, but I would still like to have a toggle action.

I have a Kidd reciever and a Kidd trigger... just need a barrel and some sundry parts and I'm on the way. BTW The Kidd trigger is just phenomenal! I tried one and bam. That was all she wrote. Just fantastic stuff.

What kind/type/length barrel are you going to use on your guns?

I'm dragging my feet on editing and uploading a youtube video discussing the design of the different parts of the action, and in the video I speculate a little bit about why they stopped making them.

From what I can gather, and from talking to PWS about it, the Summit series was not profitable for them and they chose to devote machining time and resources to other projects (similar to why they discontinued their center-fire bolt guns). I think the Summit was always kind of a niche product that didn't get a lot of marketing and also suffered from some unjustified (and some justified) hate on the internet.

At one point, some dealers were trying to get a mass order together to ask PWS to do a special run, but that idea may have fizzled out.

For my build I think I've settled on a Volquartzen carbon fiber barrel, magpul stock and some kind of suppressor. Going to take this opportunity to mess around with how I can accurate the stock. Also eager to try my hand at a new paint pattern.

My plan is to make it into a low-stress trainer for my kid and because of that I was seriously considering the Tacsol barrels with integrated iron sights, but I don't know if they will by obscured by the rail, and I can't seem to find a definitive answer.

I was thinking that design because I could shoot subs with a little less hassle among other things. I was about to say... I don't think these guys got a lot of air time so to speak for this design. Also I think the hardcore 10/22 crowd is quite a bit different. Their tastes in my opinion vary a lot from people that are into other guns as well. They sort of seem like the hippies and hipsters of the gun world. To date this (WEVO) is the only gun forum I've ever belonged to. I made the mistake of thinking all of them were going to be like it is here and boy was I wrong... [BD]

For me though I love the concept of it. If they were still making them I would consider it for sure.

Not to derail the thread or anything but now that Christmas is over I should be able to get back to business. I will let you know how the Kidd shoots for sure.

The only thing that gets me about the .22 world is ammo. I am going to just have to suck it up and buy it and try it until I find something the gun likes. Good match .22LR is expensive as hell though! Damn. Seriously.

As for suppresors what do you have in mind?

Don't forget crotchety old men... they love their 10/22s.

I've read that Kidd barrels play well with a lot of different ammunition types, so thats a positive way to look at it.

As for the suppressor; there are so many rimfire cans available and coming out, and they all seem so similar, that I'm not really excited about getting deep into research. I'll also be moving to a different state in a few months and I can't submit paperwork until I get settled in.

Right now I'm partial to the Griffin Checkmate and the Q ElCamino. Q will be rolling out a lot of cool stuff soon and I would like to support Kevin Brittingham and his future endeavors. I'm mainly partial to the Griffin because it uses a QD system.

I have been full on Griffin all the way for now. That new one that someone started a thread about (the new Rugged .22 can) also looks great.

Griffin's used to use a baffle system and now they went to monocore on their .22 can. I also like the QD thing but after playing with a Rev9 for a while a thread on isn't bad at all either. Good thing with the Griffin is you can use it either way. QD or thread on if you prefer. I use my 9mm can with a .22 end cap and it works quite well but I would still like a dedicated can.

Other than the fact that I am financially strapped right now (Christmas/bad investments/took almost a year vacation/etc) I can't make a lot of crazy purchases but I have a long ass want list. That said I am for sure waiting until after Jan 20. I am waiting to see what Trump does with regards to 41F or even other things. He can undo all of it with the stroke of a pen and for sure the NFA isn't equipped to do background checks at all. There is a lot to bitch about or discuss in regards to that so hopefully things change.

One way or another I will buy more cans. It will just be in the future when I do it and hopefully by then I will have the cash set aside for it.

As for regular old .22 ammo you can get boxes of 500+ rounds for around $25 bucks on the shelves here. I don't want to buy a lot of it though only to find out my gun hates it.

I finally have my first ever centerfire bolt action: Savage 16 in 7mm-08. I was tempted to pick up something more "tactical", but felt I had that niche covered pretty well with my AR308 so I went with a hunting rig.

I'm doing a little experimenting with the scope mount. It's in Warne QD rings on a Nightforce rail. I'm going to see how well it can be moved between rifles (using a riser on an AR) and maintain zero.

This one came yesterday. Since the AR308 Gen2 isn’t catching on, I figured this is the next best thing. Feels good in the hand. It’s actually heavier than my 2A Xanthos Build but it feels much less bulky.

Struggled to sight it in today though. Can’t get scope to go low enough on elevation for a 200yd zero. Any insights welcome.

Was that mount designed for a specific model of rifle? Does it have a slight amount of tilt in the front or rear that may affect it?

4 January 2018, 10:28
Wait, wait, wait. You can't get it to shoot LOW enough? Is there a zero stop type feature engaged on the elevation turret? That's probably what is preventing you from dialing down.

No need for a 20 moa mount. That would make the problem even worse. The gun would shoot higher than it is now.

fledge
4 January 2018, 11:02
Will, I though the same for a 20moa Mount. Yes, it won’t shoot low enough. I’m hitting 5” too high and I can’t get it to come down.

And yes it has a zero stop. I removed the cap on the turret to get further rotation but it’s at the true bottom. The windage also has zero stop but that one adjusted without the cap for a wider range of motion.

I wrote Leupold to get their feedback too. Probably something simple I’m overlooking.

Slippers
4 January 2018, 11:04
How can windage have a zero stop? You need to be able to dial left or right. Unless it's just a detent or something similar that tells you when you're back to center.

Edit: Just looked at the VX6 manual. It's a "zero lock" rather than stop, which is essentially a detent that locks when it comes back to center so you can adjust left or right for windage.

Try dialing it all the way up to as high as it will go and count the number of full MOA (Mil) that you clicked. Just as an experiment see how many clicks there are from the true bottom to the true top. And then compare that to the specs. The manual I found said 70 MOA.

If it doesn't match something is amiss.

70 MOA = 20 MIL which is what I read was the MK6 elevation travel....(3.44x 20 =69. Close enough)

And Fledge is the elevation dial’s revolution indicator working properly?

The elevation turret could be turned by a slot in the middle, a slot sized for the edge of quarter.

What do you think of the MPA chassis? I’ve been seriously considering their CSR.

I don't have any experience with their CSR, but it'd be similar besides the back end. Mine is the hybrid model, and out of all the chassis and stocks I've ever used it's the most comfortable. It's also very light.

The vertical grip is excellent. The aesthetics are meh. It does have a full length arca swiss rail and the line of 1/4" holes for their QD barricade stops (which are a bit expensive). I got a 1/4" diameter QD push pin off McMaster and 3D printed a block that fits over it, works perfect.

In general I don't use all the extra features very much since I like to shoot off a bag on barricades.

I'm starting to piece together a 6.5 creedmoor setup and I'll go with the competition chassis for the nvg bridge.

Is that a target turret, or are you just happy to see me?

Always happy to see you, but that is a target turret. [:D]

Using American Rifle Company rings for the first time. May never go back to anything else...

What is it that you like about them? Can you explain a little?

Looks like they hinge open on the sides; impossible to unevenly tighten them.

Sorry, Alamo, I didn't see your question, but 11B hit it. It's a hinged design and uses only one fastener per ring to hold the scope and tightens in a way such that there is no rotation of the optic as you torque it down.

These are the new M-Brace rings that replace / upgrade their M10 line: https://www.americanrifle.com/shop/product/m-brace-scope-rings-1414

These got on my radar when I saw them listed in this article about what is popular with PRS shooters (https://precisionrifleblog.com/2018/12/25/best-scope-mount/). They are only about $30 more than Seekins so I thought it was worth a try and then I found out the company is relatively local to me, too.

I used a set of these when I built up my R700. I've been very happy with them. Sinner doesn't like them, but he doesn't like anything.

I have standards, and don't choose flawed designs. Too many manufacturers using the correct method to compromise.

Walked her out to 1,100 yards at Rock Lake near Spokane, WA with some help from the range owner and instructor. This thing shoots. Now if I can just fix the ejection issues; Savage is sending me a new ejector and extractor.

Nice! Is the brown line on the far hill the 1,100 berm? I also see some closer target pits.

The 1,100 yard target is a gong out at "A", below. The nearest targets on that hill, at "C", below are at about 500 yards, IIRC. They are in the grass above the brown line as the brown areas is actively farmed. The distances get long as you go to the left of "C" as the hill runs away from you at an angle.

Defiance Long Range: We have a 75ft X 14ft covered building with bench or prone shooting. This area has steel starting at 250 yards out to 1395yds. There are 45 plus targets to shoot at consisting of IPSC's 45%, 66%, 100%, Poppers, circles, diamonds and animals. RLRR provides plenty of barricade and un-natural terrain training for all types of shooting

Most of the steel targets on range start at around 300 yards by "B" and run out past that (generally towards the left), both as targets in the flat area with their own berms and targets set up on the grass on that hill. There are also targets on the other hill to the right and from a different firing line you can shoot down that little "valley" between the two hills you see, I believe out to 1,400 yards or so. It's a great facility. They also have pistol bays and a 100 yard range sight-in bay where you can set up paper targets.

It's about a 4+ hour drive for me but I imagine I'll get out there a few times a year from now on.
