I'm just having too much fun here loooking at all these great idea for AR builds. So here is my new build I am working on. As the cash frees up, I get a new part, and have it look at me, telling me "complete me." So the idea is to make a nice accurate 18" rifle. I've already got my 16" Stag which lead me down this road, so I'll keep that one as is for the most part.

I have a pretty much complete lower:
San Tan Tactical STT-15
Brownell's buffer tube with a MagpPul STR
Battle Arms selector
Noveske pin set
Rock River 2 stage National Match trigger
Hogue grip.

The upper is coming together with the newly received CMT UPUR-1LH. And that is where the build is stalled.

The remaining parts to come are as follows in this order, unless I find a deal somewhere:
Hand guard Decisions:
Diamondhead VRS-T 13.5" or 15"
Centurion Arms CMR 12" or 14"
Samson Evolution

Stag BCG
Don't know if the chrome or Nickel Teflon coatings are worth the extra cost

Flash Hider/Comp
OSS Bannar Alpha 1 if I can find one
Specwar Brake
Rainier XTC

Gas Block
Syrac Adjustable gas block -clamp on. I think it's worth going adjustable, if not
Vltor clamp on gas block

Barrel
Rainier Arms Match .223 Wylde 18" SPR
Odinworks .223 Wylde 18" DMR

Am I heading in the right direction for an 18" rifle? Any ideas and input would be greatly appreciated.
If this goes well, I think next year I'll go for a SBR 300 BLK rifle.

I'm sure I'll have more thoughts on your build as you gather parts, a couple of quick things.

I'd just go with the Battle Arms EPS vs the Noveske Pins. The Noveske Pins just have the cross engraved on them, and are the same dimensions as milspec pins.

Rock River Triggers are decent, but the 2 stage triggers are notorious for turning into 1 stage triggers with moderate use. I'd get a CMC or a Geissele.

Doesn't look like you're going to suppress this based on your muzzle device choices, so I wouldn't even mess with an adjustable gas block. Waste of money.

Since your barrel will be dimpled for your gas block you may rather go with a set screw gas block. If you're also going with a Rainer Arms barrel you may want to consider this gas block and having it pinned there. I've had a low profile gas block pinned by Rainer Arms and am extremely happy with the work.

I tend to agree with all three comments made, but he's already for the pins and the trigger. But I do second the gas block comment. Huge waste of money to get an adjustable gas block at 100+ dollars for an unsuppressed build with a rifle length gas system.

I agree with GOST, get the barrel and block from rainier and have them pin it, and be done.

Maybe a BCM phosphate BCG instead of the Stag?

Agree about the BAD pin set, but it's more expensive and the Noveske works fine. And it sounds like he already has it?

Thanks for the input. I actually have both pin sets, there was a bit of a wobble in assembly, and I hoped changing out the pins may help, but it didn't.

As for the gas block and muzzle device, I was thinking I could get a supressor in the future, and at that point I'd change out the muzzle device.

He's going with a LH upper, so BCM is a no-go. Stag is really his only option.

Doh. Totally spaced that.

Why 18"? What is your thinking on that? "Accurate" but at what range?

Define 'accurate'.

What kind of optic are you considering (meaning what X power)?

I can definitely give a recommendation for the CMC triggers. I have a flat 3.5lb single stage on my rifle and I love it. I don't know if you are a single or a double stage guy. But the single works for me.

I have a Rainier 10.5' .223 wylde barrel and its been great. Havent got a ton of rounds through it but you cant go wrong with Rainier. I will also say an adjustable is a waste if you dont suppress. Isnt the the Specwar muzzle device able to take a suppressor?

So some changes.

A lot of my original items were on back order, so I compromised.
White Oak 18" Wylde barrel
Seekins adjustable gas block
ALG 13" EMR handguard
V7 selector
Aero Ambi forged lower
Saker muzzle brake for future Saker suppressor.
Ergo grip

So, this lower most likely will be my registered lower for next years SBR, and the SanTan may come back to this build. The 13" EMR may make it to my first Stag to replace the FSB. When the EMR 2 comes out, I'll probably put that on the build to fully cover the gas block.

So to answer some neglected questions, I wanted an 18" barrel because why not. It's different than my existing carbine. I understand the 2" will not give me any more accuracy, but the Wylde chamber and barrel build should get me some more accuracy. I've got a Nikon m223 3-12 to go on top.

Are STT-15 Lowers out of stock?

I don't think you compromised too much with the barrel. I know I'm not good enough to shoot the difference between the Ultramatch and White Oak, as WO makes great barrels for the money.

No, I have the STT on hand. I've got the Semper Paratus course this weekend, and wanted a stripped lower with no (ok, one, but it can replaced with a standard bolt catch) specialized parts. The Aero will be my registered SBR lower for the same reason, just in case.

Ahhh, Ok.

Enjoy the Semper Paratus class. You'd be hard pressed to find anyone that knows more about the platform than Mr. Larson.

Is that factory Stag? Or did you get one coated?I was originally planning on getting their standard left hand bcg and getting it titanuim nitrided but it would have been $160 for the bcg & $140 for the coating so I decided to just go with their nickel boron for $200

Sak007
26 February 2015, 20:20
The coating seems a bit more matte then my other nickel boron bcg's , I'll put up a comparison pic from my crappy phone .

Top bcg isn't nickel boron was just in for comparison , the bcg below the Stag is a Spikes nickel boron which isn't a pretty as when it showed up but from the factory had a deeper & more shiny coating and feel to it .

On Stag's website, it's says it's Nickel Teflon, not Nickel Boron... which would explain why it's more matte.

So it's finished. This will probably stay as is for a while, at least. The Aero will be the basis of the SBR later this year.

Next step, build up some new .223 rounds to dial this one in.

Derlin Plug. When I file the paperwork and the suppressor goes to NFA timeout , I'll replace it with a gas vent.
Thanks guys

If the ratio of lefty's to righty's reflected on this site was real world a Ballista or MRAD with the bolt on the correct side might be a reality.

Quality folks here. If we shot wrong handed badly, are we shooting right, or right handed?
