I'm looking at picking up a lower end 3x9 scope for a upper I'm rebuilding.

I am debating a Burris MSR 223 and a Nikon P223 both are close enough to the same price about $160 bucks.

Is one any better than the other? Everything appears to be pretty close between the two.

The Burris has better reviews but the Nikon looks better on paper.

After researching a bunch of scopes I realized I know exactly nothing about inexpensive mid range scopes. Or expensive scopes either. The last decent scope I Bought was a Leupold Vari-x III tactical way back in 96.

Any suggestions?
It's going on a 20 inch Hbar with a flat top receiver and an A-2 stock. I want to be able to consistently smack a torso target up to 500 and It may end up as a 3 gun rifle.

I might also suggest looking at Redfield scopes, they are made by Leopold and have pretty good glass for the price.

One of my friends has a nikon p223 4-12 on a 20" upper and has been pretty happy with it. I'd suggest checking them out in person and go with whichever has the clearer/brighter picture and least amount of chromatic aberrations/purple fringing in brighter light.

My nikon p223 has been a good scope for the money.. played with the spot on chart and so far its been dead on....

....But you say you want to "smack tagets at 500 yards and maybe become a 3 gun rifle"..

With that comment, I would not recommend the Big 3-9 and look at like a 1-4 or 1-6...

I just so happen to be doing a little testing on the new PA 1-6 and so far, thumbs up ...Im too lazy to link it, but look in the member submitted reviews, i have some pics up and such..and would be no probelm IMO to use it to do what your looking for..

Just some food for thought is all, and a 20" Hbar 3 gun setup...humm...not my idea of a 3 gun setup...but again...just some info to chew on..

I really want a 1-6 over a 3-9. I'm not a huge 3-9 fan but the 1-6 market is usually out of my price range. I was eyeballing the strike eagle but as with anything new I don't like to be the test animal with my own cash. Right now the Leupold 1-6 is out of my price range.

I had forgotten about P.A.

How is their quality? I know that some were used for T&E here.

I am a real Nikon fan, from their camera and lenses to their rifle scopes. I'm pleased with my Buckmaster 3-9 for hunting, and really like my M-223 as one of my AR optics. I am planning on replacing my .22 bolty with a P-22. Nothing against Burris, but I just dig Nikon. IIRC, they also bend their own glass, but that could be just for their camera optics.

Problem solved itself.

Things work in weird ways. I have been chomping at the bit to get some glass for a rebuild and nothing has been in my budget and fit my needs. A friend whom I respect has been trying to get me to get a decent 2.5 to 10 for this build and generally decent ones are way above my budget.

This morning I got a sale flyer in an e-mail and snagged a Nikon MONARCH 2.5-10X42 BDC scope and still came in well under my budget.

Now the waiting begins for the components to come in and I am GTG on this build.

Well for the most part. There is always something that needs tweeked.
