Cool I'll give them a try. I got these from RMR. 500 of them for $70. Not too bad for a 277 150gr

And no worries. I have a 300blk too

I buy my SMK from an old guy who has been reloading and shooting for a long time. He is a long time Sierra dealer for a few decades already.

Long story short the guy who seems very much in the know said that within a certain distance you would only see some minor differences, but the farther you go out the tipped matchkings will work better because of a better BC and a improved design. I think he said out past 4 or 500 yards you start to see improvements over the regular SMK.

From the Sierra website description of their .308 168gr...

"The 168 grain Tipped MatchKing (TMK) bullet is an excellent choice for F-Class (F Open) matches, as well as 3-Gun and various other competitions. Due to the ballistic advantage that the tip provides, the 168 Tipped MatchKing (TMK) will stay supersonic at 1,000 yards at normal .308 Winchester velocities, unlike its untipped counterpart."

I think the thinking was the same across the entire tipped line to try and produce those results...aka improve the already really good.

Former11B
31 January 2016, 07:26
If you don't shoot out past 300 yards you probably won't notice much difference. I don't buy them unless they're on sale...the 600 I got cost me less than 77 SMKs actually. I still have a bunch of 75gr Hornady and 69gr SMK to shoot also, but I primarily shoot them in my "Recce" build because it shoots those midweight Sierras really well. I use the 75s/77s in my 18" rifle

In 308, I haven't gotten any of the TMKs; I've been shooting ballistic tip Noslers (same weight) for a while and have a stash of those I'm working through and I don't shoot my 308 as much as my 5.56 rifles

For the reloading peeps, is there any value in trying to sell 7.62 brass? Especially given how the Priority mail rates have gone up. The catch here is that it's almost all crimped (mostly FC or LC stamped with a smattering of PPU).

Within a year, I have yet another PCS move coming up (or a retirement move over a year from now) and I just don't really want to move yet more brass. I've just been sitting on a bunch of once-fired brass in case I ever got into reloading, but I don't think that's going to be happening anytime soon. I'm not trying to shill in your guys' thread, but trying to figure out if it's worth listing online, only trying to sell locally, or just give up and donate it (which I'd prefer not to do and at least get a little bit of a return on what I've shot).

7.62 x what?

51?

How much of it do you have? You can estimate if you want.

You're looking at anywhere between 15-20 bucks per 100 cases if it's good stuff and especially if you can match the headstamps...it all depends on what you have.

Plain old military 7.62x51 cases in bulk are about $75 bucks per 500 cases...You will get more for the LC than the FC but it's not a crazy difference. If you have a tool or a machine to ream the primer pockets out, remove the crimps, and trim the cases you will get more money.

gatordev
31 January 2016, 13:14
Yes, 7.62x51. The FC stuff is mostly FC12. There's also a bunch of LC<something> (I'd have to go look, but I think it's two different batches of matching stamps.). If I had to guess, I probably have around 1K of cases, though most of it is actually counted in the various bags.

I had looked at getting the gear to pop the primers and ream it, but it seemed like it would quickly cost more to do that than just sell them with it.

SwissyJim
31 January 2016, 14:19
going price on Arfcom EE is about $120 per 1k, plus shipping, for unprocessed NATO brass still with the crimp in place.

I got me one of these just for the NATO brass- works like a charm. And with a simple string/rubber band mod it is pretty quick

I wanted to try some "Fully Prepped" brass for the 308. Did a little searching and came up with a half dozen companies that provide it. Picked Roberts & Son Brass (http://www.robertsandsonbrass.com/7.62-brass-and-308-brass.html) Seemed like a fair price - just under $0.34 per case with free shipping. But they guarantee "military, once fired, no range pickup brass" and provided a detailed description of how they prep the brass, and I liked what I read. They also provide unprepped brass at a very competitive rate. Brass arrived four days later and looked good. I miked several cases and they all ran exactly 2.005 as advertised. They said the brass would be a mix of LC and WCC - with a few extras tossed in to be sure the count was good. Came with 252 LC and 254 WCC - a pretty fair mix. I have "stuff" to do all the case prep, except annealing (which Roberts does) but it's a pain to do bulk runs of cases. I guess I'm getting a little lazy in my old age. Anyway, I'm pleased with the purchase. Came in a nice wooden box that I will find a use for.

I am an Xtreme bullets guy myself. They've always done me right. I just bought a crap load of 124 and 147 from them. Both RN. I am supposed to have 5,000+ bullets arriving at some point. They are backed up like crazy though from the sales they've been having.

We were toying with the idea of hollow points but didn't really see any benefit for practice ammo. Maybe there is something I don't know. Any particular reason you use HP? I am always open minded [:D]

Right-o. Paying $10 for a 4oz bottle of RCBS Case Slick was getting old. A 4oz bottle of lanolin is $9, and the 16oz bottle of 99% ISO was $3. So, 20oz of homemade lube for $12, or 4oz for $10...no brainer

99% ISO is the key. 97% is ok but definitely anything lower is going to require constant mixing up.

I've heard the 1:4 Lanolin to ISO is the way to go, but also seen 1:8. I've got 12oz of lanolin and 64oz of ISO, so mine is going to be more like 1:5.3

Otherwise, I'm going to experiment with spraying the cases on my reloading block and also dropping them in a ziploc bag with some lube in there and seeing what gets the best coverage with fewest sprays

Well I had been debating 22 Nosler and I heard about this a while back. I said whichever brass I found first, I’d build. 224 Valkyrie won.

Sounds awesome! Between those two it wouldn't even be a question for me.

I've never been an early adopter of pretty much anything but the Valkyrie looks and sounds like it will be a winner for sure. It's highly possible that I will go into it too once things become commonly available and tested.

I’m interested in the Valkyrie. Until I saw 22marksman posting up the 22grendal with 66ft less drop at 1000yards than the Valkyrie.

Decisions.

22 Grendel isn’t totally new just not widely used or talked about I guess..little reading info

I recently tried out the Nosler 77 gr CC (picked up some blems on SPS) and was pleasantly surprised. Behind 24 grains of Varget they seem to do better than SMKs in my 18" WOA SPR barrel. I need to a few more trips to the range to verify the load, still, and I've got some TAC I might play with.

What’s your recipe

23.6gr RE15 with CCI BR4 or FGMM @ 2.255”

I have about a pound and a half of 8208XBR left from my 73gr ELD adventures but for some reason I’m not getting good accuracy at loads where the velocity is high enough to be useful at longer ranges. Frustrated with it

Same here, although I haven’t tested slot the buskers shoot better for me on paper so far.

Former11- seems like the re15 is a popular choice, I only have tried some under varget and TAC , my 69gr smk’s shoot lights out under varget but not as good in the 77’s as I’ve gotten with tac so far

My 77gr nosler load - 23.5 -TAC - LC case- 2.245 - and CCI 450 mag primer

Did try a 100ct box of federals small rifle match but actually groups opened up, so stayed with the 450 which I use for all small rifle loads

Over this past weekend I shot three 5-shot groups with 77 gr CC, LC 11 brass, and 24 grains of varget with each of CCI 400, CCI #41, and Rem 7 1/2 primers. The Rem 7 1/2 was the tightest group. Looks like #41s gave the highest velocity but with a lot of variation. Unfortunately I only got chrono readings off of 1 of the shots from the 7 1/2 set, but I think I'll focus on those for a bit.

I tried about all of the primers and out of about everything cci 450’s gave me the best results with low deviation.

.50 B&M Alaskan. The flat point and cup point bullets are made by North Fork bullets, and both 450gr solid copper projectiles. They’re loaded with either 63gr of IMR 4198 or 62gr of Reloder10x and traveling about 2000fps

The Tipped bullet is a 300gr Hornady FTX .50 cal with 69gr of IMR 4198 at about 2400fps

Shooting suppressed gets brass extremely dirty to where just tumbling it with dry media and brass polish won’t work. I don’t have a wet tumbler but I do treat them prior to dry tumbling. I put all of it in a cleaned out gallon jug (it has a wide Gatorade bottle size opening otherwise putting brass in it would be tediously painful)

I fill the bottle with hot water cover the brass plus a couple inches. Then, I dump in a few tablespoons worth of Lemishine powder which is found in the dish detergent aisle in stores. I add one tiny drop of dawn liquid dish soap then shake up the whole thing and let it soak for a few hours or whenever I remember it. After the soak is done, I run a couple fresh water rinses through it then pour the brass out onto a large towel. Once it’s dry, then into the vibratory tumbler it goes.

Helps me cull brass that’s failing since the cracks and issues are easy to see. Found two would be case head separations the other day

Thanks for the explanation. I find myself doing the same with the wet tumbler without the pins. Just to clean it.

Btw, I found cheap citric acid in bulk on amazon which is basically the same as lemishine.

Do you do any cleaning after resizing to remove the case lube?

Personally, I always tumble with pins. The brass is just filthy as hell.
After sizing, I sit down at the couch and hand clean them and examine them on last time. Then they are sorted by head stamp. If I had room for storage, I'd get a dry tumbler for this, but my workspace gets smaller and smaller each year.

I've found that a primer pocket will go out before a head separation. As I've had many primer pockets fail the Swage Gauge, but never a separation. Lucky I guess.

I do it in my process of sizing. I keep an old shirt or rag in my lap to make sure there’s not excess lube on the shoulder to prevent hydraulic dents, and after I size it, I just wipe it on the rag. I did 150pcs of 5.56 last night in short order. I don’t know how well tumbling would remove the lube...never tried it
