View Full Version : What is your 'effective combination'?

On another thread about the RA Match Grade barrel we were discussing stuff when an idea that I have been mulling over for quite some time was brought up.

That concept was 'the effective pairing' of different components.

Let me give you an example. I have a Stainless Rainier Arms Select Medcon Barrel. If I pair that barrel with a Vortex 2.5-10x and some home rolled 69 grain Sierra Matchking rounds I could stack shots on a dime at 100 yards all day long and I am more than confident that I could go way out to 600 yards and beyond. I could definitely have a pretty good 'precision oriented' rifle with that combo (not to mention my trigger).

The purpose would be medium range precision and a longer range shooter.

Now here's what I am gonna throw out there.... what is YOUR effective pairings? It can either be real or a dream build.

What kind of barrel, what kind of optic, what kind of ammo would make that set work? Please say what the components are and what it's designated purpose would be and at what ranges. Include any other side information if it's relevant. And PLEASE put up all the pictures you want [:D]

The idea here is to exchange ideas or critique or whatever on selecting stuff to go together for MISSION SPECIFIC builds and what those missions really are. It's sort of a spin off of the 'explain your rifle' thread but focused mainly on function/purpose of the optic/barrel/ammo combinations (and any other relevant component such as triggers or suppressors or whatnot).

Here is another idea for refinement:

A 10.5 to 14.5 inch 300 blackout barrel (specifics are undetermined yet), a suppressor (specifics also undetermined), a mounted Trijicon SRS, and a QD magnifier and/or optional NV. The gun would primarily shoot subsonic loads but supers wouldn't be out of the picture.

The pairing would be to shoot and be QUIET. 100-150 yard effective range. Designed for quick action, ringing gongs, and shooting pigs at night.

Please critique my thinking. I think considering the load and primary purpose (to shoot subs and be quiet about it) the SRS would be a good pairing.

Now your turn [:D]

I'll take one of these please [:D]

White Oak Armament .223 1 -8 fitted stainless barrel
TBAC 223P-2 suppressor
Specialized Dynamics billet upper and lower
Seekins low mass BCG
Nightforce NXS 5.5-22x50mm MOAR
Black Hills 69gr match

Sniping hogs, deer, coyotes, or terrorists at range

I can't afford it, but it would be nice

If I can drift off the AR platform, my most effective combination is a Remington Factory 40XB-KS in .243 Winchester. Sports the factory 27.5" heavy stainless barrel in a kevlar stock. Trigger factory set at 1.5 Lbs. I had a Leupold 8.5x25 Target Turret Scope converted to 25x50, and it runs a 6" sun-shade.

I use 75 grain V-Max bullets that I moly coat. Seat them .00875 off the lands over 41.0 grains of Varget with Federal Gold Medal Match Primers. Combo yields 3450 FPS and shoots a consistent 3/8 MOA.

Purpose built for thin skinned varmints at distance.

Personal best was in Forsyth, Montana - two prairie dogs off the same mound with consecutive shots at a laser measured 630 yards. That got me into the Varmint Hunters Association's 500 Yard Club.

On the AR Platform, my effective combo is the LWRC 10.5" Factory SBR in 6.8 SPC. Sports an EOTech EXPS3-0 with their 3x Magnifier. Setup includes an AAC Brakeout muzzle device with the M4 2000 Mod-8 Suppressor. Round of choice is the Hornady 120 grain SST. Another round that is good on thin skinned varmints. This would be my "go-to" PD rifle for zero to 150.

I assumed that an effective combination did not have to be built personally. I have assembled more than a few, but none as "effective" as these two factory rifles - for me.

I've shot so many LR and ELR rigs I don't even know where to begin, lol. When you say "mission specific" even that has to have parameters, for example hunting what size game; for skin, meat, or just to exterminate; and where will you be hunting? Competition... Is there speed limits, limits on magnums, do you care about barrel life, are we talking LR, ELR, or straight 308 sniper comps? Tactical are we talking military sniper or LEO Sniper, CQB, terrain, etc? Then there's what equipment you need which will affect your platform needs.

18".
Spinach, mushroom, pineapple, jalapeno, tomatoes, peanuts, extra cheese.
Thin crust, but not crispy.
Tactical pepperoni application depending on mission parameters.

Anything goes. Just define what it is.

It can be anything from what optic you would use for a general purpose rifle, onto what you would use for a competition set up, onto how you would set up for CQB. You have the right spirit, just attach some ideas on how to set up for it.

Welcome to my world [:D] LOL

That's the idea though.... to think through which things would work together or that you might want to try and to make the combo that would fit.
