Sorry GOST I'm slow. I've started this thread to share a new cartridge that will soon be available to reloaders and to show off my latest build. I have recently gotten involved with this project as a tester of this round and will be giving full reports on performance as we go along. My barrel was ordered today and is expected end of June, in the meantime here is a little propaganda put together by the developer to fill you guys in. There is one barrel being tested now, 26'' on a Savage action. More to come.

Not yet UW, I've got a lot of the parts I will be using mocked up and will post some pics but still waiting on some things. I've decided to use the CMT ambi and upper on this one. I want to use the 15'' Houlding Precision carbon handguard on it but they're still out of stock due to moving, might actually go with a Lancer on it, still undecided. There is also a custom Savage the first one has been built on that is just plain sexy I'll try to get a pic of.

This is the first and only as of yet 7mm Valkerie. Built by Bruce Finnegan, the developer of the 7VAR and the .257 Bobcat. This one is a 26'' barrel on a Savage action, all data that will be posted to begin with will be from this rifle until further notice. His photo not mine.

Yes, it should be a hammer on medium size game out for a pretty good distance, especially my intended use for whitetail. It's running very close to 7mm-08 in it's usefull bullet weights.

GaSwamper
12 April 2015, 13:44
Not my groups unfortunately, Bruce doing some testing. 8208 is a very accurate powder, the only drawback with it is you lose a little velocity, but you can use it in a broad array with suitable speeds and I've found you can really pack it in. The great accuracy really doesn't start till you get near max.

GaSwamper
13 April 2015, 18:39
This was one of Bruce's early load developments with a 140gr. Nosler Ball. Tip. I like this pic cause it demonstrates perfectly why we load ladder checks, max may be fast and may be what a particular round wants but usually there is a sweet spot that can be found by slowly stepping up the charges as you can see here.

No, I would be eatin Ramen noodles. Always wanted to try one though and knowing this thing is gonna have a bit more recoil I want to try and get it smooth as possible. I've noticed even the .308 carriers are starting to get lighter to mitigate the recip factor. So low mass carrier, tunable capture spring, and adjustable block on rifle gas is about everything I can think of to tame the beast.

Yep pretty awesome. We have a closed group discussion on facebook for all the founders/testers so I get updates a lot of the time minutes after something happens, also get to discuss as a group each others thoughts and input. Bruce can basically have his own think tank while developing loads and testing at the range via instant messenger. It's cool, but ready to have my own barrel.

GaSwamper
2 May 2015, 04:28
There are now two AR test barrels out there now, Bruce has the 24'' and another tester has a 16.5''. The round seems to hold its vel. well between the two lengths, actually better than I expected being you are dealing with a casing that has over 35grs of powder in most cases. We've put together a small comparison of what some early findings have been between the two lengths and loads are still being developed. Note the comparison is from the 26'' Savage barrel.

I'm still waiting in the wings for my test barrel so no shooting for me yet, all info is from the designer and now one other tester has his barrel. We had a big number of barrels put on order after the first chamber was tested so it will be next month before all the test barrels are back. Many powders have already been tried and it works in a good range, 8208 gives respectable numbers and great accuracy but so far in the long barrels Lever Revolution has been the best all around and it really pushes the 168gr Berger. I know for a fact the designer has rang steel out to 700yrds so far with the 26'' Savage and I think he's hitting the 700yd range today with the 24'' AR.

My 7mm Valkerie took it's first breaths yesterday afternoon! I have to say I was pleasantly surprised with how she shot, the recoil was much less than expected, overall very smooth. I do however have to make a change to how she is pictured here, the AP Customs Rhino just will not work. I took a gamble on this real being it was a great price second hand but the 13.5'' proves to be about 1/4'' too short to cover the gas block which doesn't matter anyway being even though this rail has a large OD without the top rail channel it will not clear the top of the Parallax adj gas block. Anyway, here she is at test time.

The 2A looks pretty nice, I may have to add to the list, I do like a good flat bottom for shooting out of blinds though, the KMR would probly be the best bet. Anyone I've ever saw had one would tell ya it's the best rail they have. Does anyone have an opinion on it? Thing is it's a pretty heavy 20'' barrel out front so the UBR offsets the weight to give it more balance. I tried it with a standard tube and B5 stock and she wanted to be nose heavy on me. I don't have any scales right now to accurately measure her but I'm guessing dressed out with empty mag she's around 8lbs.

It should I think. But it will be a while before I try the can, I'm doing lots of testing right now and will wait till it's over and decide on some pet loads.

Ok it's been way too long since I updated this but been really busy lately. But I've also managed to get over 200 rounds of Valkerie under my belt and it's been great. So far I've tested
120gr Barnes TTSX
130gr Cutting Edge
140gr Sierra BTSP GK
139gr Hornady SST
154gr Hornady Interlock SP
168gr Nosler CC
168gr Berger Classic Hunter
Some have shot better than others but all have stayed within minute of deer. The 140gr Sierra Game King is probly going to be my go to for now since deer season is right around the corner here in GA, it works amazing in my 20'' barrel. I'm pushing it around 2600fps with 34gr of 8208 and getting consistent .5 groups never over .75. I could push this round harder with another powder but the 8208 is very accurate and stable and the expansion tests at 100yds shows I'm right where I need to be. The 168 Berger/ 36.2gr of Lever is proving to be a winning combination as well, so much in fact the tester group has named it the "Biggdawg" the usual screen name of the one that cooked it up. In my 20'' barrel it's moving around 2500fps and deadly accurate. I have some pics scattered around that I'm trying to round up and get posted real soon with some more testing info. BTW the Lapua brass is holding up exceptionally well but I guess that was to be expected.

Just a little group to get the weekend started right. This is an example of the 140gr sierra GK, one of the best 5 shot groups with my finalized hunting load I'll be using this season. 5 shot, 100yds, moving a tad over 2600 FPS, 34.7gr IMR 8208 2.288 OAL.

As usual I had to try my little amateur ballistics tests on some rounds. I used the same method I have for many other calibers, one gallon jug of water in front of compressed magazines and phone books. It's not the best test but gives a good general idea on slug activity when meeting a solid. The magazines are actually a pretty hard stop so 90% of bonded cores eject from the cups due to a slight over expansion or possibly the abrupt stop. I have been working with some homemade ballistic gel lately that I'll get into later.
The two slugs pictured are the 140gr Sierra Game King on the left and the 154gr Hornady Interloc SP on the right. Both impacts were at 100yds

Ok guys, with storms moving through the area figured I would catch up a long over due field report on the VAR.

The first Whitetail with the 7mmVAR is Down! Taken by yours truly on the opening weekend of the GA rifle season. The Valkerie performed great, shot was about 60yds, complete pass through dropped him on the spot using the 140gr Sierra GK.

Buck was a main frame 8 pointer with some nice stickers to kick him up to a 10. Afternoon shot so he wasn't quite as big as I thought but still a nice deer I think.

The shot was a fairly high angle quartering away shot, entered the back of the left side rib cage and exited just behind the right shoulder. Because of the high angle and close range I don't think this will be a typical exit for these bullets, I also believe the bullet was starting to come apart at time of exit. It did make for a rather impressive hole though, and certainly did the job!

So being deer season is in the short rows I decided to try a little something different for a while with the VAR. Here she is all dressed up for a night out. And she is oh so quiet with the can.
