I would have got in on the lower too but I'm not a fan of the way the rollmarks are layed out on it.

I was the opposite. The rollmarks led me to the dark side.

I was the opposite. The rollmarks led me to the dark side.I would have preferred that the model, serial and caliber would be on the opposite side with the SMOS rollmark leaving the left side clean. Still a nice lower but I'm picky. :)

Kinda in same boat....ordering later tonight, but not sure what the build objective will be yet. This stupid little voice in my head keeps saying 6.5 Grendel or .204 Ruger, but I'm trying to not heed it.

Chris, are these limited to one per person? I just got off the phone with my cousin and he wants a set too. I'm wondering if I can order it for him or if he needs to become a member.

Tell him to become a member! It isn't that hard, and it's a community well worth being a part of.

There's no doubt about that. I'll make him join at some point, I may even make an account for him tonight. I was just asking cause he's got a lot going on right now and it'd be easier for me to do it and make sure he gets in on the deal.

SMOS gave away one of these sets on FB. Very generous of them.

I just happened to catch the humor in the giveaway and guessed the correct number.

Once I hear back from them I'll have to get them hooked up with my FFL and then the build begins. They'll be a build thread coming.

Damn you! You're causing me to feel pressured into purchasing things I don't really have the money for at the moment.....All I needed was a few parts to complete my lower (trigger, stock, buffer tube, end plate, castle nut, grip, m-lok handstop, BAD-EPS). So about $350 worth. Everything I need for the upper is getting transferred from another upper. Plus I'll have a couple of things to sell to help recoup some of the cost.

I do not think the NSR barrel nut fit these rails. I asked SMOS on instagram about using a NSR wrench for installing the SMOS rail and they stated the nuts were different than the NSR. Now, that could just be the wrench size of the nut, but you may want to confirm with them directly.

^^^ Awesome. I've just got their 308 MLOK rail in my hands today. It's beautiful, but it needs an aluminum nut. Try to push them to do this. I tried convincing Chris on the phone and he seemed open to it, and has already been thinking about it.

Fit over it? Yes... however, the holes are not close, and you would look like a dork after drilling them out.

In short, no, it is not doable.

When it comes to receivers and rails, I would tend to agree as there is no middle man. SMOS also makes other small parts like QD receiver end plates, gas blocks (IIRC), and similar things. They do not do any barrels at this time, though a little bird has mentioned they have some open options in that regard.

Just received my handguard in the mail!

One thing I've noticed is without the 6 screws in place, the handguard seems loose on the barrel nut. I can wiggle it back and forth, rotate it, and it slides on and off very easily. This hasn't been my experience with other rails (which usually require a few taps from a rubber hammer or some lube to slip onto the barrel nut). I'm sure the handguard will be solid when I tighten down the screws.

I just wanted to know, is this normal?

Thank you Stick for answering a few of the questions. We should have most of the orders out at this point besides a few California BS hoops to get through. Thanks to all that ordered and I would love to see pics of what you do with them.

Did anyone get an instruction sheet with their set? I didn't and am wondering what the corect torque spec is for the barrel nut and rail mounting screws. Torquing the barrel nut to the standard 35 ft. lb. then timing to the next set of holes would probably work just fine, but torque values on non-standard barrels nuts seem to vary a lot from manufacturer to manufacturer. I sent SMOS an email asking this question on Monday and haven't heard a peep, which is par for the course.

35 and timing is what I did and the proper procedure I imagine. The handguard screws are just tightened with the short arm of the hex key. Easy.

I have their SM13 handguard on a build now. Same barrel nut. I torqued mine to right around 35 (a tad more, I believe, in order to get it aligned). Haven't had any issues either.

Must have in my opinion.

So just heard back from Chris.

Barrel nut is 35-80ft-lbs, much like a standard barrel nut, start at 35, and then go up as needed to time it.

12" rail is exactly 12" on the money according to Chris.

The 10" is 9.188

First batch of 12" is going to anodizing next week, which puts them back at the shop the week after. The 10" right behind that.

Probably just a marketing strategy. Seems like 9" would be better. Funny thing is that my Samson EVO 12.37 is 12.37" in length. They probably could have called it 12.5". As a side note, I had to go up to about 50ft-lbs to time my standard barrel nut. I don't know much, but It made me feel better that it was a bit tighter than 35. Thanks goes out to Ride4frnt for the barrel nut. :)

The 10" is 9.188

First batch of 12" is going to anodizing next week, which puts them back at the shop the week after. The 10" right behind that.

Looks like you've got to be a big shot to get a reply. [BD]

Thanks for the info, UW.

So when are these new smooth style SMOS rails and their various lengths going to be available to order? I assume Rainier Arms would be the main retailer?

SMOS needs to make a standard forged lower with the same marking. Plans on the left side with just text, and this updated logo on the right side. Keep the pricing in line with the rest of their products, which seems pretty attractive, and I'm in.

Someone make it happen!!! I need to finish my 22 as well as have a spare lower or two around for "future proofing"

Just curious, but why advertise it as 10" when it's much closer to 9"? Why not say 9" or 9.5"?

Well because of you, they're now going to call it a 9" [:D] They originally wanted to do it in a 10" but they cut it down after redesigning it a bit.

I think some of it has to do with the fact that they don't want to compete with the OEM work they do for other companies.

I actually like their standard set compared to the GFY set. I've talked to them about moving their logo to the side, and moving the text closer to the selector/trigger pin holes.

makes sense. I'm trying to figure out where i've seen a similar lower to the one on the left. I assume thats a Billet lower for another company they OEM for like the right one is the obvious noveske gen3 style lower.

i think for a mil spec lower besides quality and finish, you essentially buy a roll mark. their SMOS logo is clean looking. i'm a fan. the mule logo reminds me too much of anderson. i don't know why more companies can't come up with better logos like the SMOS Circle.

If I'm understanding what you want, you can get their lower with the text and mule logo on the left side now with the right side blank. They recently changed it to have text on left and large mule and name logo on right side.

How precise is the work, here? I know it's not a "functional" thing, but with the upper on the lower, can you see light through the juncture, if holding them in front of a light? Is there zero play, but also zero "stickiness" (Think Wilson Combat slide/frame)?

They do a ton of OEM work? So could they make-to-order without the logo? Just text? Less work time...

Does anyone know if the the other slots on the 13.7 m lok rail actually interface with m-lok or is it only the 3,6,9 slots? The slots not in the 3,6,9 position seem to be cut a little differently. I am looking an an arisaka light and mount and wanted to use the in-line mount but not sure if it will work if those slots are not m lok.

I am thinking they are not as those sections on the rail are curved and not flat...

They are not M-Lok slots on the 45 degree angles. Our offset scout mount fits the rail perfectly, however.

I started with a cheap PSA build and now intend on building the rifle I really want. SMOS has been at the top of my list for receivers and handguards. Love their stuff.

For those that care here's the weights on these rails (just talked to SMOS and the 9.0 should be coming in either today or tomorrow).

These weights include all hardware (screws, barrel nut, rail)
13.7 = 11.1oz
12.0 = 10.1oz

My SMOS GFY upper and lower are a perfect fit to one another, but both the upper and lower have fit issues with other uppers and lowers. Some the upper/lower fit is extremely tight, some they go together easy enough, but the pins require Thor's hammer to get in/out.

It's not the first billet set i've purchased that doesn't play well with others, and i'm sure it won't be the last.
