Well I've been eyeballing them since late last year/early this year and they came back into stock so I ordered one.
If no one here's from within a week or so, my wife has killed me.

i did a quick google search of the gun and it looks like atlantic firearms has in em stock used for $489 and thru another forum it's said that thats really high for a used WASR. am i looking at the right rifle? i dont really know much about Ak's so please forgive any ignorance from me.

Nope, you're looking at the right one. I thought they were OOS again.
It's a little high. New WASRs are going for $550. So I paid $489+shipping for one that's been worn.
If I would have bought a new WASR I would have battle worn it anyway, so the way I look at it, they saved me the time and money.
Most that have come back have only shown finish wear and very little to no internal wear.
All in all I'm happy. I couldn't find a wasr locally for less than $700.

Don't quote me on this, but I was told (can't remember who, this was a few months back), that the likelihood of these AKs having any sort of real history is slim; that a lot of these AKs were used by contractors that sat around the base/FOB.

I asked my friend about this too (big AK guy), and he said (as Pyzik said), that this price is on the steep end; and not worth getting. Plus he said the quality of an AK from a Soviet-bloc country is superior to these. His words not mine; don't shoot the messenger ...

Yep this is about the same that I found out as well but its still an item that was there doing light duty. My brother said they had a bunch of Ugandans inside the base patrolling around with these.
I agree with your friend honestly. Another $100 or so and you are into a nice Yugo or Maadi AK. Any true Soviet AK and you are paying a premium right now and clearly not worth the coin either.

I wanted this. No one tricked me into buying it. I know the story behind them.

Certainly steep for a used when a new can be $70 more but I like this answer with using nutnfancy's philosophy of the used was being a "second kind of cool." And of course if you have the money then by all means buy it up. It could come with some character and flair.

Well, I picked mine up yesterday. I'll admit I'm a little disappointed. I was hoping for more external wear but I guess I'll be the one to make that happen.
Lotta guys are reporting theirs weren't shot much if at all. Mine definitely has been shot. Haha.
Guys are saying there were the carried guns and weren't shot much then there were the range guns (which mine may be I guess).
Sight is slightly canted but it's sighted in. Trigger feels alright. Numbers match (except for the safety, is that a numbered part?)
It was still cheaper than new and came with a story so I'm happy in the end. Looking to pick up a nice worn/dark stock set.

What makes this AK cool is the story.. yeah so what it sat inside a base and was carried by a contractor would never saw trigger time except at the range but it was there. Hell I wouldn't stain it or anything... The wear and tear are character marks, stories that are being told by the rifle. I would make sure it functions reliably as possible and would even consider taking it to an AK class to add some of my own story to it.

Agreed with Comp. Funny you say that. I was wanting to take my next carbine class with my Saiga but now I want to take it with this.
Have you considered restaining the wood?
No staining. At most I’ll add beat up furniture for my own pleasure but keep this furniture set aside so I can revert it to original for whatever reason.

Luis, you’re loopy. Haha. Bastardization is what the Saiga is for. Now I have a bastard AK (fitting since it’s .223) and an AKM which will stay traditional.

that shorty magpul'd ak, oh my lord.
Cleaned the inerds all up the other night. Bore and chamber look great after cleaning. Barrel wasn't dirty as I thought it was going to be (yay).
I didn't touch the outside and tried to leave as much fouling at the brake as I could.

If only we could get deals on the RPKs and PKMs the Triple Canopy guys used! The ones we did fam-fire with in Kuwait were sweet. Waited til they cooled off and worked the carbon buildup off with sand....those probably had the level of wear you were looking for
