Why, most police forces in the USA are fading out .40 and going back to 9mm. Maybe a vp9 compact.

Unless HK is selling them below the cost of a G17 or a G22 to departments they will never crack that egg except on a Federal level where money doesn't matter.

It'll be interesting to see how well this sells. I don't think there were a lot of folks who were asking for this (I've seen more folks saying they want it in .45). I'm sure it'll be nice, but who wants .40?

With the compatibility of parts between most 9mm and 40S&W handguns it was the logical next step for HK. That said, I would like to see them go for a VP9c and a VP45. I would imagine existing VP9 owners will be able to buy the 40 barrel and swap between calibers.

I guess this is just a formality for a gun manufacturer offering their platform in all major calibers. I just don't see a lot of people migrating to 40 anymore.
