Reason for Purchase
After I finished carrying the BENCHMADE 5000SBK AUTO PRESIDIO, a little over two years ago, I decided that I would get a different blade, something non-automatic, to carry EDC. Ever since then I have been carrying the HEST/F blade everyday as a utility, general purpose blade. Three main selling points over the Presidio, first the HEST/F is not auto, so I can carrying in states I could not carry the Presidio. The HEST/F has a D2 steel blade over the 154CM blade of the Presidio and the fact you can lock the HEST/F into the fixed position by the turn of a knob.

Good review.

The blade though is not D2 on this model as far as I know. It's a different kind of metal. (Nilox which comes from Germany)

DPX uses D2, Nilox, and Sleipner steel in their various blades, and probably a few others.

It actually says d2 on the blade...

Cool. There ya go.

I think they made several versions of this knife. Mine is not D2.

Regardless, it's an excellent knife :)

This is the triple black that I have. It has a different tool, a different clip, and a different back to it. The clip has a skull logo on it and the back is sort of a matte black color.

All those different steels are very good stuff, but it's totally knife nerd... but I can say this... when it's time to sharpen the knives, you can totally tell a difference in the different steels. That Sleipner steel one they make, it's a pain in the arse to get sharp, but once it's there it's very rugged.

How do you like the serrations on yours? Personally I carried the T3 (triple black) with serrations for ages but I am sort of a straight blade kind of guy now.

Looks like a special addition?

The serrations hold up well and cut through various things fairly easily

Yep. For sure. 1 of 500.

I have a small collection of 9 or 10 DPX knives :)

I would have more but I am running out of money and have to prioritize on things.

I must be the odd ball or the HEST is 10 times the knife the HEAT is. I hate my HEAT. Far too tight to operate one handed. The wave notch or whatever it is snags on everything. The thumb stud does not even properly line up with the notch in the G10. G10 on only 1 side. Liner lock that either does not fully engage or locks in so tight it takes tons of force to release. Just a poorly executed design IMO. Not even getting into the fact when I received a brand new knife the screw holding the carbide point and belt clip had fallen out and all mentioned parts were loose in the package. I'd take 2 $100 Benchmades over it 100 times over.

Sometimes a product squeaks through QC and you get what you get. Unfortunately. Have you contacted DPx? They may help you out with whatever issues you have. I always give the company the benefit of the doubt and give them an opportunity to make things right before I damn a product.

I handled 2 others that had the same poor feel after I purchased mine. Was really excited to try because they offer a true lefty version but honestly I think the design is poorly executed. QC was also lacking. Live and learn. not worth the effort to deal with a warranty claim over a mid range knife IMO.
