Bit late to it...

It's Magpul. It'll sell. They announced a machined steel PMAG for April fools and got flooded with calls for orders. The marketing department also neglected to inform the sales department and no doubt hilarious confusion ensued. But thats a story for another thread...

Lol - I remember that. That was pretty funny.

Sleek and simple. I like it.

Somehow, I found a way to increase surface area without also increasing parts count, weight, adding a snag hazard, and having it stick out of the receiver's mag release fence...

Not addressing Magpul directly and specifically, but I've always found the mag release button on the AR a bit too close for my liking as it is. Thus it doesn't do anything for me to bring it closer still.

For folks with short fingers and small hands, this can make sense.

I still need to get my hands on a few of these. They're a bit difficult to come by, though. Anyone have these in stock, Roger?

High Velocity Arms carries the EMR (milspec through hole) and EMR-C (continuous serrations, blind hole) http://www.highvelocityarms.com/collections/forward-controls-design

The EMR (through hole) isn't as popular as the EMR-C (blind hole), mostly due to the EMR-C's better aesthetics from its continuous serrations. I originally wanted to make the milspec through hole version only, I do not like the button to go over the mag release fence, even though this can vary, as fence height differs on receivers.

To my finger, the EMR feels just fine, and does not have the compromise of sticking out of the mag release fence. Though the EMR-C is easier to access, due to its increased height (an inevitable compromise)

Sorry about the thread hijack gents [BD]

I've been using both the EMR and EMR-C for a little while now, both are great upgrades especially for the price. The concave gives them a very good feel.

I've never used any of the extended releases before, but got one of those EMR-C's and put it on recently the concave is a dded bonus..I like it over the std ones.

Thanks, Roger. I'll check it out. My local source for your products only carries the EMR-C, and i want the standard EMR. Hopefully the shipping doesn't cost more than the part. [BD] And i'm with you, i don't like having the mag release button protruding above the receiver fence. I find myself cutting off a section of the threaded portion of the mag catch to allow me to thread the buttons like your EMR-C (and others with a blind hole) down below the fence.

I did random tests on unintended and accidental mag drops. On a typical AR, the order of impact when dropped on the right side goes like this: forward assist plunger, shell deflector, charging handle latch, then the mag release fence.

Dimensions of receivers and mags do vary. Fence height, the number of turns the user rotated the mag catch (it's usually 8 full turns) before the mag catch shaft becomes even with the button's top surface, which is where I stop rotating the shaft. I have seen folks rotate fewer than 8 and leave a visible hole on top of the button.

On my receivers (forged Colt and Bushmaster), it typically requires 0.06 or 0.07 inch of depression before the mag drops. The EMR-C is 0.04 taller than the factory mag release button, and protrudes about 0.08 (measured from its tallest points, top and bottom tip of the curve) above the mag button fence. when installed (due to its blind hole.)

Given these numbers, it is possible to fully depress the EMR-C till the fence stops the lateral motion, and still drop the mag on some receivers, and we're talking about only 0.08 or so protrusion above the mag fence of the EMR-C.

The order of impact cited above may well change when the button sticks out more.

When the shaft is even (8 full turns) with the top surface of the EMR, my finger can't tell the difference. The C in EMR-C stands for Competition, where accidental / unintended mag drop doesn't carry penalties all that severe. It is easier to access because of its added height, but isn't meant for duty / combat guns.

Wonder what Tom Hines thinks of this... Sorta a bummer for a small company to have something like this come out from a much much much larger company.

That's what I thought when I saw them. ODIN works puts out solid products and they also make RA's mag release. I wonder if he has a patent?

Kind of reminds of the the short throw selectors we brought to market. It received a cool reception at the time, and "what ain't broke, don't fix it" came up a lot, from same companies that 2 years later made their own version of it.

As in any business, imitation may be flattering, but flattery doesn't compensate for the irk it causes initially, and impact to business soon after.

This. I've tried two "enhanced" (larger) releases and didn't care for either.
I'll be trying one of yours eventually.
