I reconfigured my lower today and feel much better about it. I replaced the grey Magpul furniture with black furniture: A Magpul MOE K2 and a B5 SOPMOD Bravo stock. I really dig it.

I also replaces the ALG ACT with a QMS because, quite frankly, the ACT felt like shit. The ACT was creepy, heavy, and not at all what i would've expected considering how nice the QMS triggers i've used have been. So, do i contact ALG, or Geissele (since they actually make the triggers for ALG)?

Now to get off my lazy ass and finish the upper. I've got an optic ready for it: an Aimpoint ACO in a QRP mount that i sourced from a PRO that got a Bobro mount.
Cmon man. Pics. Sounds awesome.

I'm in the exact same boat! I think I've decided to sell some things off so I can build this SMOS set.

Picture a standard BCM stock with an ACS cheek weld. They are nice, and the ones I played with were close to production models. I bet late Spring/Summer

Patience may be a virtue, it just isn't one of mine.

I'll try posting pictures of my lower tomorrow after work. Setting up my new phone turned into an adventure i really didn't want to take and i've got to be up at 0330 for work, so no time tonight.

Lookin good! I've been trying to decide on a stock but I may have to get another SOPMOD after seeing yours.

Did you cerakote the lower or is it just the picture? The top pic looks Cerakoted and the bottom one looks black.

Thanks. The stock is a B5 Systems SOPMOD Bravo. No Cerakote, just the factory anodizing and the light.

I own only one LMT SOPMOD stock. The rest are B5 Enhanced SOPMODs, which are essentially identical to the LMT stock, but half the price. One of my favorite stocks.

Any noticeable difference in tightness between the two? Loose buttstocks are a pet peeve of mine and my LMT was TIGHT. If the B5 is similar I may have to give it a shot.

Every B5 stock I've owned has been nice and snug on the reciever extension, no slop or rattle. YMMV.

B5 is a solid choice. I love them. Cheek weld is awesome. Only reason I went with the BCM stock over the B5 was because I wanted to try the BCM stock. Wife's rifle has the B5 on it. With BCM's sopmod thing they got coming it might be the best of both worlds.

Sometimes I'll give something away and forget I did it and tear things apart trying to find it. The other problem I have is that my work area is far too small and things get misplaced a lot. Or I'll put things where they fit and not necessarily where they belong and lose my mind trying to find it again!

Actually, today. And another time a few weeks ago. Today was when I needed to press check and I had no idea where the bullets were in the mag, so I couldn't confirm with a mag check. After 200-some rounds suppressed, it gave me a warm fuzzy to bop the FA to make sure the bolt was in battery. A few weeks ago, I had managed to run my MK18 to its breaking point (to be fair, probably in part due to not enough lube... not to mention it hadn't been cleaned in 100's of suppressed rounds). As I sent the bolt home after a reload, it would not fully go forward. Happened twice, and again, it was nice to have the FA, since I knew why there was a hold up.

I know there's lots of drama about FAs, but I like to have them, as occasionally they serve there purpose, at least to me.

Exactly! It's pretty much just aesthetics for me. I think to date, I've only used it twice... I guess I should've clarified. I wish they also made uppers with the FA, just so the option was there.

Agreed, unfortunately. I realize they may be busy, but trying to find shooting buddies in this area has been ridiculously hard especially when there are like 4 premier AR makers within 30 minutes of my house. Literally wanted like 20 minutes to take some pictures of their rifles, free marketing for them, oh well...

Was this an eForm or paper form? From what i've read, the delays were fairly minimal with eForms when the manufacturer or model wasn't listed as long as a photo was submitted with your application package. Apparently the application would show in a problem status until the photos were reviewed (usually within 48 hours), then it would show submitted/in process. This was a while ago that i read this, and obviously time lines are longer now with 41F. But hopefully this won't add too much delay to your form getting approved.

Eform. I figure adding the pic will let them know it's real, followed by a phone call to SMOS (I hope they don't email SMOS cause I may never get approved! Ha!). I don't expect much delay beyond the current craziness. I submitted a different listed lower at the same time and can compare approval speed times.

LOL! Yeah, if they email SMOS you're doomed. [BD] Seriously though, you should be good to go with the photo you submitted. If i recall correctly, someone had submitted a Form 1 on an 80% lower they'd finished along with a photo and it was only 48 hours or something before their application was in process. Post your progress in the "Transfer Times" (http://www.weaponevolution.com/forum/showthread.php?5793-Transfer-Times) thread if you get the chance. It's a pretty good resource for keeping track of how long things are taking.

I shot him an email on the 21st a few days ago. I read through every page here and the other SMOS thread waiting for the ability to reply since I just joined the forum. I have a build in progress but am holding off on upper lower and handguard just to see if I can get in on this deal. It would be perfect.

I noticed a few people said SMOS isn't the best at replying to email. Which is fine, means they are busy with design and testing new products. Wanted to post in here as well to see if they would do another sale.

Excited to see the shorter length handguards. Also love this forum, been lurking a while, this thread finally gave me a reason to join.

Thanks for the fast reply. I think that made up my mind. If I'm going to dick around with the roll pin I rather just do it one time and not have to mess with it again. Which brings up a good thought, wonder how hard it would be for SMOS to start tapping the bolt catch hole for a set screw rather than the roll pin. This is a nice feature on some other billet lowers.

Personally, i prefer the standard roll pin. One less thing to worry about falling off anf getting lost or stripping out. And if by chance a roll pin gets damaged or lost, it's way easier and cheaper to get a replace ment part than some proprietary set screw.

I think the pin hole was slightly undersize. It definitely took a bit of extra persuasion to get the roll pin started. You should be able to cover the scratched with some Aluminum Black (http://www.brownells.com/gunsmith-tools-supplies/metal-prep-coloring/blackening-browning/aluminum-black-prod4941.aspx) and have it looking good as new. I've used that stuff with very good results.

From its very first iteration (when I was developing it at Battle Arms), both paddles were already angled, though only at 5 degree, and the upper paddle was to take on a different shape than the ping pong paddle found on a factory bolt catch. These two features at once rendered the EBC (enhanced bolt catch), as it was called then, incompatible with any known battery assist device type apparatus without modification to either.

When I left BAD, the bolt catch project went with me. From there, the shape of the upper paddle was slightly changed, and has a 10 degree (lower 50%) and 15 degree (upper 50%) angle, forming a slight bend in the middle.

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i314/Duffypoo/angles_zpsuutfo50d.jpg (http://s75.photobucket.com/user/Duffypoo/media/angles_zpsuutfo50d.jpg.html)

BAD type devices work on many ARs, but can have problems on some. A bit of tolerance stacking exists in many ARs, it's just most instances don't manifest into a "failure to xxx" symptom. BAD type devices interject an outside element/variable to the interaction between the bolt catch, bolt catch spring, and magazine. An L shaped lever gets bolted onto something that was never designed to accept it, it's completely predictable it could cause issues on some setups.

For the reason mentioned above, incompatibility with BAD type devices is an acceptable trade off for the ABC/R's larger and angled paddle. There were suggestions to make the ABC/R's upper paddle into the same shape as the factory ping pong paddle, so BAD type levers can be installed, and the smaller paddle would also be universally compatible with all kinds of thicker billet uppers.

ABC/R, along with everything we make, is based on and following TDP specs (other than the areas where we made improvements), and made for TDP spec upper or lower receivers. ABC/R's twice-angled paddle clears most thick billet uppers. Deleting the ABC/R's upper paddle features to accommodate an add-on device (BAD type levers) that causes problems on some ARs, and out of spec billet receivers (sorry, if it's not TDP specs, it's out of spec on the outside), is the tail wagging the dog, these two reasons would make the ABC/R a ho hum, another run of the mill bolt catch but one that costs 3 times as much as a factory unit [BD]

ETA: many thicker billet receivers, like the one pictured above, have generous relief for oversized bolt catch paddles, or BAD type levers. ABC/R in many instances looks as though it was designed for these uppers :P

Fastenal Part No. SKU: 0134938 and SKU: 0154138

Did you check grainger? There's one by my house, they may have had it as well...

Grainger is more Lab supplies. I opted for a 10 pack of stainless ones from McMaster after Fastenal couldn't put the order through without error. Ordered product 90291A305 for $7.50 for 10 of them.

Got a chance to sight in both the irons and the Vortex Strike Eagle using bulk Wolf Gold. Bottom middle target you can see the 3 3rd groups I shot to dial the 0 in at 50 yards. Left and right were both 3 rounds to test 0 and top middle is a quick 5 shot before range called cease fire. Extremely happy with the results especially from the stock mil-spec trigger. Larue MBT should only make this better. A few pics of the finished build, don't have anything besides cell phone pics yet.

12" handguard weight is 10.15 oz with barrel nut and hardware and is exactly 12" long.

I think I'm going to try out the 12" rail on a 13.7" upper. Jumping on the cool guy wagon here [BD] But really, I've wanted to go as short as possible without SBR'ing, and a 13.7" with a BE 249F or 249S pinned/welded makes that possible. Not really a fan of the KX3/5 on a 13.7 just because it's awfully heavy to have out front. Makes it kind of awkward to maneuver to me.

The 9" GFY rail was supposed to be delivered last Tuesday but UPS lost it. SMOS shipped out a replacement Friday and it arrived today! How's that for service!

The 9" is actually called the SMR556 9.188 SR. The actual length is engraved on the rail itself, just like on the 12". I took a measurement for those of you confused by decimals.

For those who complained on the loose fit of the rail over the barrel nut on the GFY rail, this one's tolerance are very snug. Same barrel nut but sans the Erath3 logo. I hope they release a lightweight nut for this.

A 30mm will also work as there is only a .006" difference between the two. I ordered one off amazon for ~$10 as I couldn't find any local retailer that had a 30mm or 1 3/16 by itself or in a set.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B002YK9QB8/ref=yo_ii_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Don't forget when you are running a crowd foot on a torque wrench you want it 90 degrees to the handle. If you have it in line you change the lever arm of the wrench and will not get an accurate torque value. Realistically between 30-80 ft-lbs it may not make a difference, always best to be accurate though.

With a 3" extension due to the centerline length of a 30mm crows foot, actual torque with the wrench set at 50lbs is 43 ft lbs. I have a app on my phone for torque corrections. Lol It certainly makes a difference but in this application not enough to matter.

Looks like the lower is threaded to accept a small set screw to tighten the slop between the upper and lower. Does anyone know what the thread pitch for this hole is?

Well I got the 1/4"-28 nylon tipped set screws in and they did not thread down into the hole. Diameter is correct but I believe they are 1/4"-20 Coarse thread and not the fine thread like the grip screw. Strange they would tool up another tap to thread this separate hole when it is right next to a fine threaded hole.

If you want to get real fancy you can measure from the centerline of rotation of the open end lugs to the center of the closed end wrench. With the wrench parallel to the floor, fashion a crude hanger from some wire and hang a known weight from the wrench. Multiply the lbs of weight by the length you measured converted from inches to feet. Boom... ft-lbs of torque. If you don't have weights but do have a scale you can use that same length then stand on the scale. Push down on the parallel wrench until you subtract 30-80 lbs from your weight on the scale.. boom known torque.

McGuyver would be proud.

Do y'all know if anyone sells shorter screws for MLOK accessories? My cousin tried installing a Magpul rail section for a bipod on the rifle pictured above, and the screws hit the barrel before they're tight. Just wondering if there is anyone that sells shorter MLOK screws online, or if his best bet would be to try to find some at a hardware store. He lives over an hour away from the nearest Lowes or HD so ordering them online would be ideal.

The Atlas is on the way so hopefully I can make a trip out there soon to take pictures of it. Oh, and shoot it...I guess that'll be fun too.

By the way everyone, there is now a Table of Contents in the first post of this thread! It has a list with hyperlinks of every SMOS complete rifle or upper posted in this thread, along with the person's username and a brief description of the build. Pyzik and I will try to keep it updated as often as possible as new builds are posted.

Josh, that rifle is looking great!

I need some help here guys.
I finally have a barrel coming (thanks James). Nothing special, but a barrel nonetheless. I can upgrade later.

What I can't decide on is a Griffin Armament taper mount flash hider or their minimalist hider.

It doesn't help that there are like NO pictures of the minimalist on rifles.

Looks good! How are you liking that scope? Considering one for my build too.

Awesome! I have a PST 1-4 on my DD M4v5 and have been pretty pleased with it. Was my first Vortex optic.

Should be ordering a muzzle device by the end of the week. We'll see.

It'll grow on you... Wanting something a bit different on this one. The more I look at it the more I like it.

Call me crazy, but I think the stealth grey would look good with the bazooka green!

The green is so off that it looks great with FDE

I have to agree I don't like the dark earth with that green. Black or coat the parts the same green.

You already ruined it with the .277 barrel.

Complete the furniture if you're going FDE. Get a Vortex Razor 1-6 and Geissele super precision mount. :)

Hi guys, I hope this is the right place to put this. I just finished a 12.5 inch pistol build using the SMOS 9 inch GFY rail. I wish I could've gone with the GFY Receiver Set but I had already bought the upper and lower. Specs listed below:

Lower:

Anderson Lower
KAK Brace w/ receiver extension
Magpul SL grip
PSA LPK
Seekins Ambi safety

Upper:

ADM 12.5 inch barrel
ADM Forged upper
BCM BCG
BCM Ambi Charging Handle
A2
SMOS GFY Rail
Magpul Pro Sights

Installation was super easy and this rail is hard to beat for 150 bucks. Haven't shot it yet but should this weekend and may give it a poor man's cerakote job (krylon) in a little bit.
