Someone is excited!

So what kind of gun are you looking to build? 16" 14.5" SBR? SPR?

16" unless the rail is shorter, then I'll go SBR. [:D]

Rail is 13.7" IIRC. 16" would go well with it.

I'm going 16" with mine. Should look great.

I already have most of the parts on hand for the upper that I'm transferring from a lower that I SBR'd. Got to pickup a grip, stock, buffer tube, buffer, end plate, castle nut, and M-LOK handstop and I'll be set.

Oops, forgot the handstop of some sort.

I wish I could get the NSR rail panels to work with the rail. I love them.

Does anyone know where the muzzle of a 13.7" barrel will be in relation to the end of the 13.7" rail? I'm hoping it will sit a little further back so a Noveske KX5 will sit just inside the handguard. I may just have to SBR it and get an 11.5" or 12.5" barrel.

David -

Was it your intention that this was a site-wide SMOS build compilation (everyone contributes their plans and progress here) - or would you prefer to keep this focused on your project? I don't want to step on your thread if you want to keep it focused.

Either way, it's cool that these GFY sets will all be built soon since few of us will be waiting on stamps.

No one place EVER has everything i want to order in stock when i'm ready to buy. It wouldn't be so bad if most places didn't rape you with the shipping costs. I realize that in general, shipping isn't cheap. But when a place wants to charge $7.95 for that horse shit UPS SurePost, when they could've sent it flat rate Priority Mail for a couple bucks less AND got the packing materials FREE from the USPS irks me. Hell, First Class mail is cheaper and faster. But i digress...

I have a couple small lower parts that should arrive today.

Problem: looks like my 9mm may be back on.... building two ARs at once is gonna hurt.
Especially since I refuse to spend my suppressor money. That could get both done.

I've got everything I need to finish the rifle on hand, except the receivers and hand guard. I haven't heard a peep since I placed my order and spent my money, which is coming up on two weeks ago.

At any rate, of the parts on hand, I'm not 100% decided on what I'll use. CTR or STR? MOE, MIAD, or MOE K2 for the grip? Rainier Arms, Troy, or MBUS Pro for BUIS? And I'll need an optic. I've got a Scalarworks mount, but the optic I was going to use in it got a different mount. Guess I should've ordered the T2 bundle from Scalarworks.

I spoke with a man at the ATF the other day and he said they have been having issues from an address change on a form. Apparently August was a month where the issues hit the worst. I have got back stamps on 2 cans purchased at the end of September but I'm still waiting on the stamps for 2 Sakers purchased mid August. One big plus is the SBR's I filed in November already have been approved.

MIAD and standard MOE grips are my favorites. I favor the MIAD, but own more MOEs simply because of cost. Out of the Magpul stock line, the STR is my favorite, but i also like the CTR a lot. Branching out, i'm still a big fan of the SOPMOD stock as well.

Or save yourself time and money and just pick up the BCM Gunfighter Mod 3. I replaced my Grip 23 with the GF and am moving all my grips over to GF. IMO, better contour and texture but pretty much the same angle as the Grip 23. The compartment door is a bonus, too. Pair it with the BCM trigger guard.

Of the BCM line of grips, I like the Mod 3 Gunfighter the best. But I still think it's too thin at the top of the back strap where the web of my hand sits. The Grip 23 is nice and thick in that area, giving my big hands a little extra reach to the trigger and forcing my hand lower, which I find to be more comfortable. I will say that I like the Mod 3 enough that I haven't replaced them on the lowers that came with them.

Other than the thin-ish back strap, the thing I dislike about them most is the small corner just behind the trigger guard pin. It doesn't blend the side of the grip with the receiver trigger guard ear very well and irritates my finger. I always have to spend time with a file removing material to make it comfortable. Magpul grips blend that area much better and are far more comfortable.

100% agree. I find the BCM grips very uncomfortable due to that area. When you hold the rifle in one hand, like during reloading, all the pressure ends up on your middle finger beneath the trigger guard, and the shape of the BCM grip doesn't help.

Sent from my SM-N910V using TapatalkI had enough stuff to sell to raise around $350 which more than covered the parts needed for this project. Plus I did get in on the upper/handguard combo and sold it too since the whole set is coming. Hated to do it, but it wasn't going to get used so it had to go.

To share the wealth I gave my friend an Aero lower to build his first AR. He paid me for the rest of the parts and I'll finish assembling it either tonight or sometime this weekend.

Still working on figuring out exactly what I want this set to grow into. Current constraints: 14.5-18" barrel, un-suppressed, not specifically ambi-enabled and featuring parts from WEVO group buys/sponsors. Here's the lead candidate assuming that it'll be a upgrade from my current 16" Rainier Select-based build instead of an alternate caliber. Much of the stuff I can re-purpose from other builds or scrape together from bits just lying around - but I would have to invest in the barrel which is what's got me on hold until I'm sure this is the direction I want to head.

Upper Receiver: SMOS GFY (no FA, group buy)
Barrel: Rainier .223 Wylde 16" Ultramatch Fluted SDM profile (sponsor)
Rail: SMOS GFY 13" (group buy)
Muzzle Device: Precision Armament AFAB Mini (could become Griffin Armament Taper Mount)
Bolt Carrier Group: Fathom Arms Standard Melonite FA (group buy, subject to change since it might be a better fit elsewhere)
Charging Handle: BCM Gunfighter Mod 4
Gas Block & Tube: Geissele Lo-Pro Super Gas Block + Generic Tube

Lower Receiver: SMOS GFY-15 (group buy)
Trigger Assembly: Geissele SSA-E or SD-E
Grip: Magpul MOE or MIAD
Buttstock: Magpul STR
Selector: Battle Arms BAD-ASS Std/Sht (could become Rainier)
Mag Release: Forward Controls EMR-C + Generic Catch (sponsor)
Bolt Catch: Forward Controls ABC-R (sponsor)
Extension: BCM 6 Position (could become Griffin Armament)
Action Spring and Buffer: Sprinco Blue + Generic H2 buffer

Small Parts: KNS Turned Pins + Springs TBD

Optic & Mount: SWFA Super Sniper 1-4x24 on Aero Precision Ultralight Extended Mount
BUIS: Magpul MBUS Pro
Light: None (would be Arisaka Scout if it needed a light, but this has more of a bench feel to me)

Mag: Magpul G3 20-round, WEVO etched (group buy).

It probably merits something beyond the 1-4 scope but I don't have anything clearly in mind yet.

Thanks to the WEVO crew for the opportunity to belong to this growing community. We have been long time readers of WEVO and are excited to be involved in a more official manner. Thank you to those who have followed us previously; we wouldn't have the great products we have were it not for consumer support. We are honest, hard working, normal guys and love supporting the 2nd amendment and freedom by cranking out quality kit.

In appreciation for this community we want to offer a WEVO discount code to forum members only. PM us here on the forum for the coupon code which can be used on our website, www.GriffinArmament.Com (http://www.griffinarmament.com)

As far as group buys there isn't a point to having one when you can PM us for a discount code. Its much easier for us and you will get your product faster without having to depend on the logistics of a group buy.

A representative from GRIFFIN will try to be actively involved in this community. However, our main focus is on manufacturing and it is not unusual for us to take a couple days to respond. Thanks for the heads up Aragorn! I'm planning on using a few Griffin parts for my SMOS build and another rifle so that'll definitely help.

The IMOD is a great stock. Both functional and stylish. I've got only one gripe with it, and that would be that it likes to grab my beard every now and then.

It's kind of a drag. I was clean-shaven when i first got an IMOD, and loved it. But once i grew my beard back, i put a SOPMOD on that gun and the IMOD went to a gun i don't shoot much.

I had a similar problem with an EMOD. Still like the stock, but I've been mulling over replacing it with something else.

I bought the full set, and I can't decide on a few things. My set is off to get Cerakoted in Magpul FDE right now[:D]
Here's what I have so far:

Upper -
GFY Receiver
V7 Lightweight Door
Lantac E-BCG
(Not sure about CH, eyeballing the new Geissele ambi one)
GFY Rail
(Not sure about barrel - Either 16" or 18" - anyone have suggestions? (been looking at Ballistic Advantage Hanson Series))
(also haven't picked a muzzle device)

Lower -
GFY Receiver
CMC Flat 3.5
BAD EPS Pins
BAD ASS Safety
Strike Industries Mag Release
Strike Industries Bolt Catch/Release
Magpul K2+
(Can't decide on Magpul MOE Fixed Rifle Stock or Magpul SL-S or STR)

Optic options are wide open - Haven't really picked this rifle's purpose yet.

Anyone have any suggestions on any of this?

I've got an EMOD on my SPR that i keep thinking about replacing as well. It's a great stock, but damn the beard pulling. I may just replace it with a SOPMOD, which is still one of my favorites.

Good list of parts, but like you said, until you figure out the purpose of the gun, it will be hard to tweak.

I think I've decided I want to go lightweight with it and make it all purpose. I'd go with a 14.5", but I'm so indecisive about muzzle devices, I can't get myself to pin and weld one, and don't want to SBR it.

So.... I guess, suggestions for a lightweight build, anyone?

Going off that I'd probably use a Magpul SL stock and grip vs the above mentioned. Optics would be a red dot like an aimpoint t1(or similar) or the Trijicion MRO or something in those categories.

Wonder how many ounces we're talking between this set and a forged set? Maybe I should be a little more specific. I definitely want to keep it lightweight, but I'm not necessarily going for BAD-LW and titanium parts lightweight, just light enough to run drills with and run around with, if that makes sense.

Has anyone tried out the Ballistic Advantage LW Hanson Barrels?

Yes!?! I have the 18" standard version. So far I've been thoroughly impressed. The ballistic advantage Hanson series is one of my favorite barrels out there.

As far as the billet vs forged. As long as your not going for BAD-LW as you mentioned the billet will work but as UW mentioned isn't the lightest overall. [Insert billet vs Forged Debate]

The SMOS set is 18.3oz. a typical forged set is 17oz. Not much difference.

If you want lightweight, look at Faxon pencil barrels. 17.5oz for 14.5 and 19oz for 16". Not designed for precision once heated up but if your purpose is short range defensive, you're in biz.

Typically, when you build a LW gun, comparable parts are only saving a few ounces, but when the entire gun is put together, the totality of the savings is where it's at.

Having said that, I'm not a fan of LW builds.

On a sidenote, are there any graphic design companies that offer firearm renderings? In the show truck world, practically every SEMA truck owner has a rendering done to visualize the build before investing a ton of money in the truck. I'm curious if there is anything similar for firearms. Personally, I wouldn't mind spending +/- $100 to get a visual of an AR before dropping coin on anything. Just look up "KegMedia" on Instagram to see what I'm talking about.

Don't know if it'd be as good as the the KegMedia renderings, but I've gotten pretty good at using photoshop to piece together builds to get a decent idea of what they will look like. The FFL I used charged me an $85 fee which I thought was outrageous. Luckily they gave me the option of buying $85 worth of stuff so I picked up an MBUS rear sight and Magpul grip. In the future I'll definitely be using a shop down the road who charges $35...

Look at it as a free transfer with an $85 purchase, and it does't look so bad. i probably spend at least that much on other stuff when i have a transfer to pick up, and i still pay the $35 transfer fee. Not a bad deal if you have other things you need to purchase, but i sure wouldn't use them if all i wanted was a transfer.

$25 for first, $10 for each additional on same form. I have one that does $15 but he's not organized and takes forever. So I choose convenience over cost.

Man I'm jealous haha. You would think competent, cooperative gun shops would be easy to come by in Texas but apparently that isn't the case. I know they're out there but I have yet to find one.

Well my build most definitely started off on the wrong foot last night. I started with the lower and with the hardest part of the LPK installation, the bolt catch. I've installed at least half a dozen of these bastards without issue but this time was different.

I started the roll pin with a starter punch and it seemed to be a bit stubborn but it was going fine..... until I switched to a roll pin punch to drive it the rest of the way. The roll pin started mushrooming shortly before being all the way "home". So I decided to remove it and try it again with a new pin. That is when the real fun started. The pin would not drive back out, ended up snapping the punch off and it jammed up causing the whole thing to be locked up. After trying just about everything to free the broken pin and punch I ended up having to cut the damn bolt catch out.

Anyway, even after I taped the crap out of the lower I still boogered up the lower around the roll pin ears and the bump out forward of the bolt catch which was caused by the punch breaking while trying to drive the pin out. I think I can hide it for the most part but I am not happy with myself. This set is just too purty to damage during assembly.

Obsenities were most certainly flying.

Well I did get the rest of the rifle assembled and will just have to order a new bolt catch to complete the build. Probably going with an Forward Controls ABC/R Forged. I was surprised how easy the bolt catch paddle broke off with moderate pressure so I won't be using mil-spec versions anymore.

Now for a couple pictures.

Honestly, in EraThr3 and Sheri's defense on the Freedom Bone, the CH was a limited run for promotional purposes. They knew it wasn't going to be a big seller or something they kept stocking. It was to show off some machining by the AXTS guys, who tell me the Freedom Bone takes 10x more machine time since they're using grade 5 Titanium, not that cheap Grade 2 stuff. At $299, they aren't making a lot of money on it, but as I said, it's a promotional thing. Definitely not for everyone.

EraThr3 is a lifestyle company more than a firearms company. If they could make some quality products that they engineer themselves, like inventing an actual better charging handle or scope mount or whatever, they'd be taken more seriously. As it is, they still need to prove themselves beyond being a high dollar marketing corp.

That's the point, they aren't taking themselves seriously. They are well aware that they are a lifestyle, and that lifestyle doesn't fit most people. You nailed it on the first line. They brand themselves as a lifestyle company more than a firearms company. They also insist everything they sell, including the promo items and clothing are made in the USA, which also adds to the prices.

Not knocking. If they're not sold out already I'm sure they will be soon. As a former machinist I know all about machining Ti, and while not my LEAST favorite thing to machine, it wasn't too far off from it.

Start pin with starter punch, squeeze, send rest of way home with a couple taps. Seems easier to me. With no chance of mushrooming the pin.

Exactly. Anytime I've seen someone install Roll Pins with pliers, they have some jacked up lowers.I know what you mean, but those people were using regular pliers with the teeth. I have a bunch of those and would never think of using them to install a pin. The plier wrench I posted has smooth jaws and the action of the pliers is straight not at an angle like regular pliers.

Taping the jaws, also helps. I use the same technique with a set of vise grips. If I get lazy and don't re-tape the jaws, I might make a small scratch, but given the use of the lower down road and the wear it will receive, I quickly get over it. But with good technique and patience, you can do it with no mars or marks just fine.

I'm sure you're one of the people that are good with his hands and mechanically inclined. I just don't like to see people try to use pliers as not everyone is careful. Plus, a Roll Pin starter and punch are cheaper tools. I have seen some dicked up lowers and uppers over the years.

Could also get some Sugru and make some silicone covers for the jaws. More durable than tape and won't scratch anything.

Okay that CMC looks badass paired with the SMOS set! Just when I think I have my mind made up on a Geissele... lol

Also what dust cover is that?! I think this build is deserving of something other than mil-spec.

Bingo. Their plain one. I wanted a V7 port door but just couldn't justify almost $50.
Also digging the SI pins. Not sure how I feel about their mag release bar. Finish isn't near as nice as the pins.

Thanks.
I knew the CMC would look good in it.

Did you get the regular or "Enhanced" UDC? Says on their website you have to use the Enhanced for some billet uppers.

That SI pin flows with the lines so well I didn't even realize you had it installed lol. Looks good.

It is slightly harder to close than a milspec.

I bought an SI mag catch for my GFY build. Finish on mine is about on par with milspec. But hey, it's stylized. I went with a milspec dust cover on mine. My lower is finished as of last night. I went with an ALG ACT that i had sitting around for the trigger, Forward Controls ABC/R, BAD pins and safety, with a MOE K2 and CTR in grey for furniture.

I'm waiting on my goofy sized crowfoot wrench to arrive to finish the upper, which is getting a Centurion Arms 16" CHF barrel and BCG, BCM Mod 4 CH, Magpul MBUS Pro BUIS, and a BattleComp 1.0. Optic TBD.

Just throwing this out here to see if anyone is interested:

I have a 14.5" Faxon Gunner barrel that I am wanting to part ways with. Muzzle brake was NOT pinned because it is SBR'd. It has hardly been used at all. Didn't count carefully, but probably between 100-150 rounds through. I'd sell it with the Faxon gas block and tube as well. Just seeing if anyone might be interested! I currently have it on a build with the SMOS SM13 rail, and it fits very nicely with it. Comes out just past the rail without a muzzle device.

Do you have any pictures of that setup? I'm thinking about getting a 14.5" for this build and I'm curious what it'd look like.

And do you know if there is there enough room with the 14.5 for a silencer outside the rail?

I want to say a suppressor would fit outside, but I have no guarantees.

Here are a couple pretty poor pictures from my phone that I have off hand. May be able to get some close ups of the muzzle later.

That rail is also .15 inches longer than the one you got, Josh. Not a lot of difference but from this pics, it should have plenty of space between the rail and the shoulder of the barrel.

I was going to pick one of these today but I'll have to wait till they have a free shipping weekend or coupon code. $7.95 shipping on a $18 punch and 5 gas tube roll pins is just retarded. I don't have any immediate need so I can wait.

However, I bought one of these to make installation of the bolt catch roll pin 100% painless.

I already have a bunch of other house related uses for this thing too. It arrives tomorrow via Amazon warehouse (under $40 shipped). Now if Rainier Arms slow ass shipping would just get my ABC/R shipped out I could install the last piece on my SMOS build. My bolt catch arrived today and I got it installed. I have to say that using the Klipex Pliers Wrench made installation a breeze.

I just noticed the Torx heads on the screws. Are those aftermarket or did they come with the CMC? That may give CMC some points in my book if they come with the trigger...

Btw, that rifle is coming along great! Almost makes me want to ditch the polished lower parts and go all black.

I tried to convince myself otherwise, but i think i agree with you on that. I bought the grey furniture i used on my SMOS lower for another black lower, and i really didn't like it on that set either. It's tough to beat black on black. I've got a NiB Mega billet set in the safe. Maybe i'll save the grey furniture and try it out on that.

I've thought about a Cerakote job on the furniture, but since I don't have the skills to do it myself it would be cost prohibitive. If I was looking at their web page correctly, Rainier Arms want $85(!!!!!) a piece for Cerakote! I'm sure there are less expensive options out there, but I'm not sure where they are. One thing I am sure of though, is that after staring at it for the past 3 or 4 days, that shade of grey just isn't my cup of tea with the black receivers.

I reconfigured my lower today and feel much better about it. I replaced the grey Magpul furniture with black furniture: A Magpul MOE K2 and a B5 SOPMOD Bravo stock. I really dig it.

I also replaced the ALG ACT with a QMS because, quite frankly, the ACT felt like shit. The ACT was creepy, heavy, and not at all what i would've expected considering how nice the QMS triggers i've used have been. So, do i contact ALG, or Geissele (since they actually make the triggers for ALG)?

Now to get off my lazy ass and finish the upper. I've got an optic ready for it: an Aimpoint ACO in a QRP mount that i sourced from a PRO that got a Bobro mount.
