Ok , first off was not sure what to name the title, as I'm just showing and wanting to start a discussion on various projects, for tips help and to show off your DIY or other work.I can't edit it so if need be...

So now to start it off, always took to tinkering, painting cars etc so every hobby I always look for the DIY options, Why? Cause I like the pain.. no..Really as I love to recreate/refinish or give something a new life..And I'm poor and can't afford the pro jobs...So done a few paint jobs but always wanted to try Gunkote or Cerakote bake on, as they seem about the best along with like moly resin.

Ok so what started off as a trade a while back and got a used citadel 9mm 1911 in trade..shot it a few times always ran good just a basic weak bluing job and not much frills gun, well guy before me put on some skateboard tape on the front grip..don't like it..so tried everything to remove it..well SOB..he or someone glued it on with something so it just F**ked up that area and left blotchy spots of no finish and a little...So thru that in the safe for a while..

Fast forward...Now I am no BDL but for my first time it came out good, after carefully putting it together all was good..and wasn't real nice in it and hasn't chipped anywhere yet, will update later on how it's holding up. Used KG Gunkote flat black and flat OD 2400 bake on stuff, couple light coats and baked at *325 for an hour and a half..

Pics are what they are for being up till about 3 putting it back together..lol..Before it's hard to really see much but can kinda see the front strap all goofed up

Also notice the billboard and made in Philippine marks...look at the after pics ...[:D]...

Breakdown prior to cleaning lightly scuff as bluing is a good undercoat for KG, brake clean , bake, spray then bake, let cure..no I didn't use the house oven, got a neighbors free oven recently so i have a garage oven..lol

Completed for now just need to paint front sight dot I drilled into the front blade..sure I would of liked to put a Wilson single sided safety, extended mag release, better MS housing , sights and more, but didn't want much into this project.

As you can see I filed/sanded off the billboard and other writing , much cleaner..also spent a little time reshaping the ambi safety down some..Grips are off my other 1911 but don't fit thus very well..but for now I'm just gonna shoot it and see how it holds up..etc..

It's hard to catch a true pic of the green, but it's a nice matte true od color

Thanks guys, like I said it turned into a project and I'm happy with it so far, gives me other ideas.

Whoa. That looks, dare I say, professional.

That's quite a a compliment , much appreciated. I'm no BDL or such but I take pride in my work..ok I'm a little OCD also..but really it was an involved project to take on for a first project , but jumped in head first and I can say this won't be my last project.

Nice work. It's truly all about the preparation.

Thanks , and yes the prep is key, learned that from painting cars, think your done sanding, sand again, and as cleaning ..as everything leading up to the actual painting takes 90 % of the time involved it seems like.

Thinking about using air-dry Cerakote to coat an AR barrel. It's already bead blasted, so the prep should just be to make sure it's degreased and clean -- or am I missing something?

I pre bake everything and degrease twice. The air dry seems even more sensitive to surface contaminants than the bake on. It will look great until the first time you get it hot and then it will blister.

I'm with sinner, I clean and degrease atleast twice , the air dry stuff for a barrel would not be a good idea, the Cerakote bake on is what I would use for a ar barrel, use latex gloves/or similar after cleaning and so on till done. Prep work is key.

Sinner- where's the pics .....[:D]

Quick shot of the first project on page 1, outdoor gives it a better look at the OD/ flat black contrast also 150 rds thru it and after one fte, then some more oil it ran without a hiccup with factory and my 114/147 gr reloads and seemed to favor the 147's for what I shot thru it so far, pretty soft shooter being a 9mm but still a little snap..kinda
