View Full Version : What's in A (User) Name?

Army Chief
5 March 2009, 09:12
Not sure that I've seen it done before, but we're a small enough community that this might prove both entertaining and a bit enlightening: when you get a spare moment, write a line or two about your Weapon Evolution user name, and what it might tell us about you.

In my case, Army Chief isn't a grandiose self-proclamation or anything like that ... I just happen to be (a) in the Army, and (b) a Chief Warrant Officer.

See how easy that was? :)

adrenaline [(uh-dren-l-in)]

A hormone secreted by the adrenal glands that helps the body meet physical or emotional stress (see endocrine system).

Note: Adrenaline plays a very large role in the fight or flight reaction, which refers to the various processes that occur within the body when it is confronted with some form of mental or physical stress.(from dictionary.com)

Bacardi 151 is an over-proof rum. The 151-proof liquor has an alcohol content of 75.5%.

Due to its high proof, it is typically used as a component in cocktails (whose final alcohol concentration may or may not be greater than that of drinks made with conventional rum). Bacardi is the only manufacturer that uses a flame arrester on the bottle.[citation needed]

Due to the high alcohol content in Bacardi 151, the spirit is flammable at room temperature and is used in cocktails such as flaming B-52s.(from Wiki)

Also Adrenaline was the first album by the Deftones, which was one of my favorites back in the day. I was trying to think of a creative e-mail address and I needed a name and numbers and that's what popped into my head. I've used it for pretty much everything online since, it's always available...

Back in my undergrad days, I was in a fraternity. Since I was the resident smart guy, they nicknamed me Jeeves. "Got a question? Ask Jeeves!" Even to this day, my friends pepper me with questions, as I've got a reputation for overly researching things, and finding the best possible answer to a given set of criteria.

The 915 comes from my birthday being Sept. 15...

Scumhunter……. I love to hunt deer, turkey and upland birds. Hunting is my primary off-duty passion. When I’m on-duty (LEO) I focus my attention on the dregs of society. You know, the real stinkers that feed off of people with jobs and morals. I like to seek out these scumbags and make them as miserable as they make the rest of the world. A lot like hunting but the final result is incarceration instead of tagging. Thus; Scumhunter.

rob_s
23 March 2009, 07:42
rob_s, for anyone that's seen my articles it's pretty self-explanatory. However, there is a story as to why I now use my real name.

I have been, on one forum or another, norman74, in_burrito, and cooperbiker74. The genesis of those names isn't important, but at a certain point I got kind of tired of the way people in GD on some other nameless forums hid behind their anonymity. So when I started over, I decided to use a variation of my real name. I even had forums where I hadn't been banned yet change my screen name to rob_s.

So here we are.

federalist22 - it's a throwback to our founding fathers and the Federalist Papers.

"Americans have the right and advantage of being armed - unlike the citizens of other countries whose governments are afraid to trust the people with arms." -- James Madison, The Federalist Papers

"The best we can hope for concerning the people at large is that they be properly armed." -- Alexander Hamilton, The Federalist Papers at 184-188

As for 22, February 22nd is my birthday (also George Washington's) and adding a number the first time makes it easy to get a username validated when joining a site.

5thprofession47
1 April 2009, 06:06
The Fifth Profession was a novel written by David Morrell back in 1990. It dealt with professional close-protection and it's connection to what the author called 'the fifth profession', protecting others. The "47" referrences the Japanese story of "The 47 Ronin" who were a band of masterless Samurai. The term ronin became associated with a samurai who was for hire, having no one master.

When I started posting to internet forums several years ago I just put the two together.

“Quib” was the nickname given to me shortly after I arrived in Germany in the spring of 1985.

Back in the barracks, I was sorting through my freshly issued TA50 and put my helmet and sunglasses on. One of the guys in my Platoon piped up stating I looked like “Quibbley”, a cartoon character from the “Stars and Stripes” Newspaper.

To this day, friends I’m still in touch with from my service days call me by the name “Quib”.

I always go by my real name. I've never understood how anonymity on the Internet was any different from anonymity anywhere else. I'm a school teacher. Every now and then I receive an anonymous note. For all the obvious reasons it always goes into the trash can immediately, unread. I know it's an unpopular position in the cyber-world, but I want to approach it the same way I do with old styles of communication. If I send you a letter, or post a note on a bulletin board, or phone you, or put up public notice anywhere in print, I sign it. For me the same goes for the Internet.

If you’re referring to the rocket scientists who decided to take their hummer into the WRM lot for a quick nap, they were 15’d, reduced and discharged. For the membership, I was at Prince Sultan Air Base, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for a year. We had one of the largest open air conventional storage sites in the world. One of the patrols, a two-person mobile patrol with mounted M-60 (yes, we were still using 60’s in 1997) decided they were tired and needed a nap (they even brought blankies with them). The brainiacs pulled their 60 from the mount and backed their hummer into a slot within the War Readiness materials motor pool lot where there were hundreds of hummers parked. Wasn’t too hard to find them though since they left the pintle mount on top of the vehicle – stuck out like a sore thumb. Hopefully that’s what you were referring too, if not, a free war story!

Welcome home. Hopefully things are going well for you, it’s been awhile since we've talked.

Drop me an IM so we can connect again. BTW – I wish I had your photo skills, not all of them, just the ones in your little finger. ;)

Different service and different population band, but I'm definitely feeling that particular pain right now.

It was a great job, but it was a tough one. No luv from the field for sure……

I appreciate all the response and thanks for the warm welcome!

Just talking to one of your guys yesterday, he is getting ready to retire soon. I'm surprised he can walk with his knees as blown out as they are. I hope he is treated decently by the VA. I'm pretty sure he owes me beer now that I think about it.....

Welcome to the board, good to have you over here.

23 May 2010, 11:04
Well… it’s kind of a long explanation, but… “Triple Bravo” is phonetic for “Triple B”. As a police officer, my well known nickname is “Triple B” but few know why.

The truth is that a close knit plain clothes unit I worked with for years thought that I closely resembled the Bob’s Big Boy restaurant icon. They boiled Bob’s Big Boy down to BBB or Triple B. The B to the third power became a short hand way to write my nickname while taking notes during surveillances.

When it came time to pick a trade name for my new business, Triple Bravo was the obvious choice.

2 June 2010, 15:35
When I joined my first forum I wanted a user name that reflected firearms in some light, and at the time I had a .338-06 chucked up in the lathe. So I used .338-06 and shortened it to .338 in my subsequent adventures in cyberspace.

Name I came up with on another forum and it has stuck. Plus I have to have a back-up for all my weapons. Just in case the primary goes down.
2 1911's,2 870's,2 sniper rifles,2 hunting rifles,2 AR's and etc. Kind of anal about it. Before the wife got sick I had two of alot of different weapons.

Santa
5 August 2010, 17:23
My user name is two fold. My last name is often mistaken for Santa's last name but is pronounced different (Klaus, which rhymes with house). In addition, it of course, became my nickname and callsign in the Navy. I was an OS (Operations Specialist) and became an ASAC (Anti-submarine Air Controller) and the instructors gave me the callsign of "Santa". Also, during the holidays, I always have someone see my last name and ask me if I am related to Santa Claus.

Back in the 80s I had a really great job as a DoD SME for an ARMY unit. I used to stand formation with the guys I was attached to. One day the Team Sergeant bothered to look at my boots which were covered with Massachusetts and yelled "Muddyboots!" It stuck. Hard. Everyone started calling me that. They even gave me name tapes that said MUDDYBOOTS on them.

I use it on all forums.

FACEMATE, in high school I took drafting and at the urging of my pals I would change my last name on the drawings just to drive the instructor nuts. This is the one that seems to have stuck around for some 25 years. It's random alterations of part of my last name(mate) .

Cannon Fodder
17 February 2011, 16:09
Cannon Fodder (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannon_Fodder), aside from being an apt reference to line troops engaged in trench warfare, is a reference to my all-time favorite computer game. During downtime in Iraq, my group likes to cool off by playing games like Call of Duty. I love it when they yell "Ah **** , Cannon Fodder!" Something to be said about having good hand-eye coordination.

It is a pretty self-explanatory name. I don't consider myself an expert at anything. I just try to learn. I know how to use a search button, and I try to ask questions that have been posed less than three dozen times.

i recognize a lot of the usual suspects from other places. I promise to behave.

Woodpuppy

One of my first "real" summer jobs at age 15 was on a construction crew building a house in the FL Keys. The slab, columns, and tie beams were all already poured, and all the studs, beams, plywood, joists, rafters, etc. arrived in 3 containers. My job was to unload the containers onto the slab. I spent a couple days humping wood, and once the crew arrived and started on the 2nd story subfloor I humped more. "woodpuppy, go fetch me 2 x 6's and keep bringing 'em til I tell you to bring fetch the hurricane clips." Then I was known as clipdawg..... Those suckers were sharp, I still have scars on my fingers over 20 years later.
