All good. Hmm, I'm not sure for that large of a date separation. I believe a couple months difference between barrel and receiver date would be considered "correct,"
not sure about that far apart. I'll get back to you on that.

M44 is on my want list. Have had the 91/30 pictured above for a while now .... though, not sure which I want more, M44 or 91/59 ... leaning towards 91/59 to be honest.

Had a line on a mint M44 a few weeks ago, messed up and lost my chance.

What's the requirement for MilSurp? Age?

I'd argue something that was US or other govt property, so technically some ARs would be fair game. Although maybe it should be C&R, too.

Hmmm - good question, I never really thought of that.

Me personally, I wouldn't just limit Milsurp to just US Property.

gator - what AR's are you speaking of?

Hmmm - I guess we could say nothing antique (ie: before 1900) and nothing after the 60's/70's or so.

That's why I said "other" governments, like Krags, Swiss, etc. But still, ultimately if it's "military surplus," then it should probably have belonged to a government at some point.

As for ARs, there's plenty of "Property of US GOVERNMENT" stamped M16s, but they're not C&R yet, so that's why I clarified that maybe they should be C&R. I don't care either way, but just putting it out there.

Ohh - my bad. Didn't even associate other with other countries. Was thinking other [US] govt property.

And sure - valid point. I've got no qualms with that.

Plan on picking up a standard M1 from CMP (probably an Service Grade), then want an 1903 (A3 or A4) and an M1A1...

I'm still giddy that I got one of the carbines... still working on researching its history and parts... then need to do that one the Garands

Curious - how do you plan on picking up a SG Carbine? Via CMP auction? Unless they plan on putting out more Carbines? (kinda hope they don't ... already a 3-6 month wait for FG/SG Garands ...)

An M1A1 is definitely a Carbine I'd like to get over something like an M1C/D.

If you need some help with Garand info let me know - I know a decent bit about them (know nothing about Carbines, so you're on your own there haha)

My CMP account is currently "expired" because they need proof of service again (and telling them that we're not legally allowed to provide copies of CAC IDs is blowing their mind). So I emailed them asking if what I had submitted for a Carbine would reset my account even if I didn't get a rifle. I figured even though my paperwork got there on the first day, I was probably out of luck. The lady said that they're still working on Carbine orders, so apparently there's more to come.

Also, as an aside, CMP is apparently stuck on having an "expiration" of service, which doesn't actually apply to all service members. I've got a letter on letterhead that has "INDEFINITE" as my end of service but with my earliest retirement date, so hopefully that will work. We'll see. I should probably ask on the CMP forums since the lady hasn't written me back.

Well that sucks. Try calling one of the stores. From what I've read, the folks there are very helpful - and you'll probably get a quicker answer too.

If that doesn't work the forums would be a good place too - there are ALOT of knowledgeable and friendly people on there.

The Military ID part - that's to show proof of participation in marksmanship right? If so, have you considered using your CCL instead? Sounds like it'd be much less hassle than a CAC work around.

It's actually for affiliation. I used my passport as my citizenship proof, since again, I can't provide my CAC. I have no doubt they'll help me, and it sounds like even if what I turned in isn't good enough and they have a Carbine, they'll get in touch with me and hold my spot, which is pretty top notch in my opinion.

I just haven't had time to push the issue with them...or scan the dumb letter I had my admin generate.

Just from the pic, I can tell you had the early WW2 version of the trigger guard (milled) and it looks like post WW2 rear sights.

If you got it from the CMP, I'm guessing it's a field grade?

And I didn't even ask for it... based on what I have seen from other boards, there have been a few leaking out in recent deliveries... like they found a crate of LEAD rifles in the warehouse... I was a little disappointed that it wasn't WWII vintage, or at least Korean War, but that has passed...

Neat isn't it?

Funny - comparing a couple stocks I have, the GI (at the time) who had, all seated the bullets on different parts of the stock. Some did it on the back end towards the buttplate, others right below the op rod track.

... bought a tiger striped stock recently, guess I'll have to build it up.

Actually, just looking at the machining cuts, almost all of them are straight and utilitarian lines. Reminds me that those guns were produced as fast as possible with only one intended purpose.

Beautiful rifle and photo's. I can really appreciate the design and function of a Garand. A lot of folks have told me they just look to bland or utilitarian. That was certainly the idea behind them, but over the years, to my taste anyway, they've taken on a certain beauty. But I can sure say this. I'm glad I came up many years after they were retired. I really don't think I would have wanted to hump one of those all friggin day.[:D]

Thanks kindly. Nothing wrong with bland or utilitarian ... though, I've never heard it called that before. I've heard it called simple and majestic before though [:D]

Though I will say, if you ever compare a '45 rifle to say, an early or pre-war rifle - you will notice some variations. Things were definitely simplified over time.

Honestly given the time in which the Garand was developed, it was an engineering marvel - still is, if you consider the fact that the basic principles of the operating system are still used today (M14/M21). The only other well known competitors of its time were the G43 and SVT-40. I don't know much about SVT-40s, but I do know that the G43 had overgassing problems.

Agreed, would definitely not want to lug around 10+ lbs of wood and metal [:)] ... though apparently there's a lot of people out there that would rather carry an M1 over an M4 [crazy]

Ha..ha..yeah boy, unless they're older folks, who fought with them, they probably might rethink that. My dad joined in 1955. The M1 was the first rifle he ever carried (previously a fairly poor kid coming from coal country), before that he had a single shot .22 and a shotgun for squirell. He didn't know what to think prior to his first tour in 'Nam, when they issued and trained his group on the M16.
I'd say that the modern guy who would rather hump a M1 all day, give him a 20K in the freakin desert, with gear, and 98 degree weather (feels like 105) once, and I'd like to see how many change their mind[:D]

All kidding aside, I still love them, and really don't know why I don't own a nice specimen. Maybe give myself one for my birthday or Xmas this year.

No it's weird, because it's the Nam era dudes who say they'd rather carry an M1. I suspect those that say that either never have served ... or were part of the really unlucky ones that ran into a lot of problems with the M16 early on.

On point with what you said - guarantee those people are only thinking about carrying just an M1, nothing else. No FLIC/LBV, ruck, ammo, etc.

... should probably get one sometime soon (especially since you don't have anyone to tell you no [BD]). CMP has Field and Service Grades for $635 and $735 (OOS at the moment); but they do have Field Grade Specials (new production barrel) as well as M1C's and D's in stock currently.

Correct.
That's why I say mostly original as the stock seems off. The rest of the rifle has correct parts with perfectly matched patina and wear so I'm thinking it may have been restocked at some point to a more "correct" Stock. But a few members of gunboards think it's an original stock that passed through rebuild with the carbine.

I believe the only other cartouche besides the inland mark in the sling well is the crossed cannons inspection cartouche.

Those are so interesting! I'm not really into military surplus, butt I'd love to get one of these Swiss beauties. [emoji41][emoji106]

That's gorgeous. I need a K31 to keep my K11 company.

This is a new-to-me 1939 with almost perfect bluing and excellent condition stock. The trigger on this thing is amazing. It's a match grade trigger. And the strait-pull action is super smooth and a joy to shoot. Picked mine up from Simpson LTD for a reasonable price. The surplus GP-11 isn't readily and cheaply available like it is used to be, unfortunately, but there is some indication that more will be coming into the country maybe next year. I think Kris/Edelweiss pretty much locked up the supply.

Does a WWI 1911 made in early 1918 count as a milsurp?

Decent K31s run from $500-$700 these days although I'm sure you can find a better deal if you look around. Ones with Diopter sights as used for competition shooting after their military service will run over $1,000. Like a lot of old milsurp guns, they used to be hard to give away. I think the secret on the K31 is getting out, as these are very finely produced rifles designed for marksmen.

It’s been reblued but was made in 1918.

Holster was my Great Uncle’s that he carried when wounded in Okinawa near Sugar Loaf Hill. USMC 0331. Jap harassing artillery fires, hand grenade and bonsai charges at night wounded him and seven others; 15 total Marine casualties but his company killed 35 Japanese in two days

Nice looking 1911. Where they originally blued or parked in 1918? Have you had this for a while? Vintage 1911s like that are getting pretty pricey these days

This was the original finish on the early 1911s. The one below is the same year and very close in S/N to mine. Had it a few years, shot it with a full power load of 230gr ball on its 100th birthday (July 4, 2018 was close enough for me)

Having been reblued, it’s definitely lost value though. Fortunately I do have a few very functional 19200 cage code vintage magazines for it.

After S/N 300,000, it changed to a darker finish from what I’ve read

Around 2,620 with 120gr Match Burners and 39.5gr of IMR 4064. Great accuracy for shooting 100 yards with open iron sights
