I suspect that it was to ensure the magazine did not become unseated during boat ops, or some exercise where the weapon had a chance of bumping around a lot. Just a guess though.

I have known Brits to tie-down a mag to their weapon during training exercises. The magazine would be loaded and inserted to the weapon, and then secured with 550 cord. The cordage would be long enough for the magazine to drop free, and the tie down prevents them from actually losing the mag during a quick reload.

I would like to think he did that to secure his mag coming ashore, but who knows. Either way the photo put a great big grin on my face. God bless him! [:)]

@schambers: Yes, I believe you are right. Then again, it may also mean that Marines are such marksmen, they only need one magazine per operation. :)
