Over the course of my life so far, I've noticed in the Western world a real tendency--over the last 15 years especially--to judge history outside of the context of it's time in a way that serves only ideology, and not understanding. Applying modern moral standards and sociological structures over the top of the past only makes you confused. The media loves to use this tactic to weaponize history for their own machinations.

I've met a few interesting characters during that time and "Reb" is high on the list. He's an American. A Musician. A Writer. A Southern Gentlemen. A husband and father. And he's one of the few living American Volunteer Rhodesian Bush War Combat Veterans. He writes books these days, and he doesn't charge much for them. I believe they are worth your time and encourage you to check them out. Maybe we can get him to finally write "the" book, but for now, he's got some good quick-read fiction on tap. Please check it out, and don't be afraid to drop him a line through Amazon or Facebook.

If only I had permission to tell you the things he's told me. One fine day. :)

LOL! It was the 70's. That's the way shorts were. Command discouraged them wearing them in combat but "the lads" did it anyway. They wore French Jungle boots a lot too, which are in essence Converse All-Star athletic shoes. Shorty-shorts, Basketball shoes, Five 20rd. Magazines, two cantines of water, 1 Frag, 1 White Phosphorous, and a baseball-like cap they called a "c*nt cap." That was pretty standard in that war. Ammo was so scarce that they were required to answer for expending more than three rounds without a kill some months. They usually faced groups more numerous than they. Luckily the groups were not usually well trained so they pushed aggression in their training to make their smaller numbers count for more in the clutch. I believe there are only about 3 living American born Volutneers now left alive. Reb is one of them. Joe Brown is another. It was a vicious little conflict, with not much quarter given or expected by either side.

There is another guy that is best buds with Reb I'm hoping will write a book. He was a "Black Devil" as well (Armored Car Corps) with Reb. He fired a hail-mary shot at the battle of Monte Casino (The one in Mozambique) from a 90mm mounted on an Armored Car chassis from about 2 miles out against a Russian 23mm emplacement that was peppering his car. He didn't hit it, and it was well outside the range sights of his gun, but he landed so close the crew of the 23mm ran away. It saved the life of the RLI and SAS guys crawling up the side of the mountain during the attack.

One other point: Some of you guys who went through Bragg may have met some of these guys if you're old enough. Craig Bone is an Artist who has paintings hanging in the Pentagon. He's got a new one out and if you're ever there please check it out. He paints this stuff FREE HAND. They are HUGE murals. You can't miss it.
