If you were building an upper in 458 socom with no forward assist or dust cover (cmt) would you get a standard bolt carrier group or a fancy one to show it off? I see young mfg makes a chrome one with no forward assist serrations.

It's your gun and only has to make one person happy. It probably costs insanely anyway d/t being an odd caliber, so do whichever makes you smile!

I'm asking purely for aesthetic purposes. But know nothing about fancy coatings. I do love the look of TiN though. I've heard mixed reviews on it as a bolt carrier coating. Maybe that's really what I'm looking for in this thread. This gun will be a "fun" build as I don't hunt and don't have any reason for 458 other than because I can.

If you like it, buy it. It's your cash.

The TiNi gold finish is wicked cool and none better for blingage, just know that normal wear spots will show the base metal on any finish you choose. It won't show anything disreputable through an open ejection port, though. I say go for it! When I research, I find reviews that focus on function and try to choose the best from there, knowing I likely won't exploit the full benefits anyway. The old "What's the best?" question is best by Phuc Long's awesome youtube video:

For the common coatings, chrome, NiB, TiN, etc are there any negatives besides cost? Let's not argue benefits or cost.

"Get NiB dark," chants the mob spending your money.

I've got all 3, and variations of them... surprising I know.

If money is no object, and they are all built properly, personally I prefer Chrome. It cleans up the easiest. I've never had to do anything more than wipe it down. The bolt tail just needs a little brush scrub after a long day of shooting and that's it. Also needs a little lube.

TiN and NiB to me run about the same, the NiB discolors a bit more. I haven't had issue with either, but TiN is generally more expensive than NiB.

Care to share which brands you have? I'm purely looking for aesthetic reasons so will probably go with chrome or TiN

Are these heavier than a standard milspec bcg?

Never mind. I'll go with one of these. I like that rainier stakes the key and the price is right

I've got that exact one and a couple of National Matches.
