View Full Version : Say goodbye to fairly priced ammo for awhile anyway

Last week I went into Cabela's to purchase some 223 for some builds I have in progress. The PMC 55gr had the best price at $6.49 a box of 20 rounds. I bought three hundred rounds and as I was checking out the cashier handed me a coupon good for $25 off of a $100 purchase good 6/20 through 6/30.

Today I went back to Cabela's to get my 25% off of $100 purchase and was shocked when I arrived at the 223 supply. There was no brand of 223 priced any lower than $8.99 for a box of 20 rounds. There went my perceived 25% savings. Friggin' ridiculous. I sure hope we don't have a repeat of the last shit that went down in regards to ammo price/availability.

I knew the prices had gone about as low as they were going to get but I didn't expect the prices to bounce back up from the bottom as steeply and abruptly as it appears they currently are.

Cabelas does this often and switches back and forth with what's in sake , pmc bronze, xm193, etc and goes back to regular no lube price of about 50 cents a round..honestly don't ever buy ammo there unless it's in sale and have a coupon

Online is almost always better even with shipping

I don't know how all serious shooters aren't into reloading. I've been doing it for over 5 years now and can't believe I didn't do it sooner. I still have Hornady 55gr bullets leftover from the last scare....and I've been shooting pretty regularly.

Did you put "fairly priced ammo" and "Cabela's" in the same context?

I've pretty much given up on Cabela's. Last time I was there I had a coupon for $20 or $25 off a $100 purchase and I couldn't find anything worthwhile to spend it on. 25% off a shitty price plus WA's lovely sales tax pretty much always means I can do better elsewhere. The customer service last time was also a joke (much to my surprise...I'm usually pretty please with their CS).

On the other hand, I just got their shooter's catalog in the mail yesterday and I do appreciate how prominent and vocal they are with their NRA support so I'll probably swing in from time to time. I'll steer clear of shops like Academy, who now hide their MSRs behind the counter like porn mags and Dick's (who pulled their MSRs after Sandy Hook).

Exactly.

Cabelas is one. I won't even walk through the doorway at Gander Mountain. Academy is getting to be just as bad.

Once I get back in the swing of things my first order of business is I am going to drop about a grand or more on reloading supplies. That should keep me in stock for quite a while, especially since I am not a crazy hard shooter.

I am 110% in the reloader camp. You won't do anything but save money. I have considered getting a much bigger (faster) reloading machine but in all honesty a guy up the road has all that so if I buy all the stuff I can go make 5000 rounds of whatever in not very long of a time.

My goal is to get some 5 gallon buckets (with lids) and fill up 4 or 5 of them and then build off of that. Instead of 5 gallon buckets though I will probably do 3 gallon buckets because the weight is just insane.

For a regular .223 55 grain round you can reload the thing for around 15 to 20 cents a round (given that's once you get a good stash of brass).

17 cents a round vs 35 to 40 cents a round.... it's a no brainer if you are willing to put in the leg work.

At sgammo Wolf Gold jumped $10 per 1000 this week. Been sitting at $299 since Christmas. Was down to $279 at the end of last summer.

After a politicized attack like this one, we can be glad ammo is in stock at all. Buy what you need when the going is good. Prepare for the next panic. Don't buy during the next panic. Next panic comes in November.

I don't reload yet. After looking into it for a while, I decided buying is better than reloading for me in this market both in terms of time and money. I save all my brass for that day though.

I started to order 9mm, and forgot to finish the order. Logged in the next day to order and went up 1.5 cents a round.... damn it.

This , reloading is a upfront cost but leads to more ammo, Better ammo and time to get to know/tweak and perfect your loads for your rifle..

Plus I enjoy it, another extension of the hobby..

Myself , not sitting on enough boolits as if like especially if crap gets stupid

For those of you looking to get some deals on bullets, I found a site called American Reloading recently. They specialize in pulled bullets, but the come out pretty nice and I've had good luck. Their stock is continually rotating and their prices are really low. I scored 9mm 115gr plated bullets for 5.5 cents and 223 pulled mixed lot for the same. I've ordered about 5k bullets from them so far and have had a grand total of 10 unusable bullets. They have sales often, but if you keep an eye on it you can get some good deals.

I've used American Reloading before with decent results. Rocky Mountain Reloading is my go to place though as their prices are cheaper and their brand of bullets are hair as good as any other ones out there...
