I think every LEO and MIL troop I know carries a knife (or 6) on duty. I make ZERO claims of being a knife expert, but I'm interested in what you guys out there carry, and why. I guess the followup questions would be if you would by the same knife again, and do you carry it when you aren't in uniform?

For guys who carry a knife every day and aren't in uniform, what did you pick, and would you buy the same blade again?

I'll shoot some pictures of what I've been carrying (you can start laughing now), and I'll try to defend my choices.

Something I wrote elsewhere. One thing that's not part of this post is that I view knives as a tool first and weapon second. I've used (see the well-worn Striker below) work knives extensively, but I've only used a knife as a weapon twice, and one of those times it was a kitchen knife. [BD]

.................................................. ...................

I sold Benchmades years ago, and consequently own quite a few. I have several blade styles, sizes, etc. I also still think that Benchmade is just about the best value in the knife business, and with the number of different styles they make today I always start with them when I'm knife shopping and then go to the competition if Benchmade doesn't have something that will fill my needs, which is rare.

I have gotten away from any tanto or serrated blade styles. While I do think they can serve their purpose, I don't find that either is suitable for my use. Combine the two and you've got yourself an even less useful tool.

Let's look at the Griptilian with thumb stud as an example (even though I think the one with the thumbhole is a better tool)

Here's the basic Griptillian. Notice the full smooth cutting edge of the standard blade. The blade is 3.45" long and you essentially have the full length of the blade for cutting.

http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q111/rob_s/gun%20stuff/551.jpg

Now here's the same blade style, but partially serrated. Notice that the serrations take up at least 1/3 and more like 1/2 of the total cutting edge of the knife. Yes, the serrations still cut too, but depending on what you're cutting you may not want that jagged of a cut, and in my experience a sharp non-serrated blade will cut through things like zip-ties and packing straps, and even extension cords, without a problem.

http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q111/rob_s/gun%20stuff/551sbksn.jpg

And here's the tanto version. See how the sharp angle in the blade reduces the cutting edge even further? The longest uninterrupted cutting edge on the knife is now the serrated portion. If what you want is a serrated knife, buy a serrated knife, because buying this blade style is just about useless for any fine cutting.

http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q111/rob_s/gun%20stuff/553sbk.jpg

One last suggestion, and I don't think this option exists in the mini-Griptilian models, but if you're going to be doing any cutting that involves plunging the knife into something, or if you're going to be using the full length of the blade for cutting, consider getting the thumbhole model. In my experience the thumb stud just gets in the way, and gets mucked up with whatever you're trying to cut in these situations.

http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q111/rob_s/gun%20stuff/550hg.jpg

If you're wondering where I come up with all this nonsense, it's from carrying and using a very early production Benchmade Striker as a daily work knife on a construction site. This knife was used to dig holes, cut insulation off of chilled water pipes, cut many a head off of a defective extension cord, and also open boxes, pull staples from plans, and even do a little paper cutting in the office. Notice the amount of finish wear as a testament to how well used this knife was. In the year that I used it I sent it back to Benchmade once for the lifesharp mostly because I kind of dinged the blade edge on the foremost cutting surface using the knife as a screwdriver.

http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q111/rob_s/gun%20stuff/dsc0665mediumgv5.jpg

and what's my current daily carry knife on the jobsite? The one below, based on all the lessons I learned trying to use the Striker as a work tool.

I've carried a Benchmade CQC-7 (Emerson) for many years, which was ordered as a left-handed variant. It looks a bit worse for wear, but I haven't ever really had a need to replace it. I normally do carry it while in uniform, but frequently go without after-hours -- it really all depends where and what I'm doing. Although the CQC-7 is no longer a cataloged item for Benchmade (a near-identical version is available directly from Emerson), I would definitely buy it again.

My go-to-war blade (vest mounted) is a Model One Military Fighter (http://eliteknives.com/fighterelite.htm) by John Horrigan. Great piece of kit in every respect, and well worth the price of admission.

I do value quality here, as elsewhere, but am not really a blade collector by any means, unless you count a few German knives that I've picked up over the years for hunting or military purposes.

Deer hunting:Buck 119 or 110. Gutted about 20 deer between the two, still sharp. Sometimes carry my SOG FLASH II for casual carry. Light and quick to get to. Waiting on the OKC tanto bladed fts bayonet. So far all good pics in my opinion. In this day and age, as long as you pick a knife from any of the known quality brands you will be ok.

I carry a Kershaw 1570ST for my tool/utility knife. It's got a very good grip so it doesn't slip around in my pocket or my hand. It's a 3.5" blade, with spring assist so it opens easily when I need it. I also carry a Leatherman Ti with all kinds of goodies, which I carry on my utility belt. I just bought a KaBar TDI 1480 that's sole purpose is a second-chance weapon. I mount it on my belt so I can access it primarily with my non-gun hand, but it's still accessible to my gun hand if need be. This way if the bad guy is trying to get my gun, I can either go for my BUG or start shankin' him with my KaBar while keeping my gun hand on my gun (and the bad guys' hands) and hopefully in the holster. I read an article recently in which this method saved an officer's life in that very situation.

I am always changing what I carry, but I have been carrying the Spyderco Endura (#2 on the picture) for awhile now. I want a knife that I can rely on, but won't be heartbroken if I break a tip off of it. Ultimately it is a utility knife that I use to cut, pry, open, just about anything and everything with. The Endura has been a very good knife and I will most likely buy more Spyderco in the future.

The below picture is of a few of the knives that I have had over the years, most of the Gerber knives were the ones that I hauled around in the Army. I slashed my finger open with the Gerber Gator (#3) the first day I had it back in 1999. Only needed one stitch. [BD] #1 is my SOG Seal Pup, which I had attached to my vest while I was in Iraq. It is an extremely durable and reliable knife. I will always have it and I will pass it onto my son when he is old enough for it. The last knife (#6) is an Okari Knife made in South Africa. I know absolutely nothing about the make of the knife, however, I traded one of my Benchmade knives with an Iraqi PSD guy while I was in the box. I liked the design on the wood handle and figured that I could buy a Benchmade folder just about anywhere in the states. I have many other knives, most which I have no clue where they are now, except the two Ka-Bars that I have on my "Active Shooter" vest.

Okay, I'll play. About 20 years ago I picked up my first Spyderco, I believe it was an Endura. I was intrigued by the design, especially the pocket clip and I began to carry it as a cop. A couple years later I lost it and replaced it with a Police model. Since then, I have gone through a few more similar folders. Some have been broken and more lost. I've carried one version or another virtually every day. I've gravitated toward moderately priced production folders with a pocket clip. I currently have Spyderco, Benchamde, Kershaw, Al Mar, Gerber, CRKT and a few others. The one I'm carrying on-duty right know is a discontinued Spyderco Wayne Goddard. It's been used for all kinds of cop work, from cutting seat-belts to scooping out dope to field test. It's been back to Spyderco twice for their excellent resharpening service, simply because I've abused it.

On duty I carry a Kershaw Blackout (assisted half serrated) clipped to my vest.
Off duty I carry a Benchmade Mini-Presidio auto (plain edge).

I have dozens of knives but those are the ones I use now. I have used (and liked) several other Benchmades, Spydercos, CRKTs, Kershaws and an Emerson that were all good also. I use the Kershaw for duty because its good enough to be useful but I have 3 of them and won't mind when I lose or break one.

Blackhawk crucible folder, its a "3.2 vg-10 plain blade. good steel. strong linerlock, and i like it because im able to securely grip the lower half of the knife and basicly make a 3.2" to a 5" blade.

or

Ontario RAT 1, 3.6" AUS-8 plain blade. cheap, we'll made, folds very smoothly.

I usually carry a SOG Trident Tanto auto. Nice and sharp, holds an edge, and balances well in the hand. Well worth the coin.

Of course, I have a really nice Benchmade on standby, but I rarely take it out of it's box! Benchmade knives are top quality, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend 'em.

For EDC I carry
1. SOG Visionary II because it's light with a small profile and is fast to deploy with the Axis lock.
2. ZT 300 as pictured above if i'm using a backpack or MURSE.

For work I use a Blackhawk Hawkhook - it's a rescue style folding blade/tool. I am a corrections deputy at my county's jail and this is about as close to a true knife as I can get while on duty.

For my SHTF/TEOTWAWKI blade I went with the Chris Reeve's Pacific and partnered it with a Hayes Tomahawk.

I have been training with and collecting knives for many years. I currently EDC a Blackhawk Blades "Be-Wharned" designed by my friend and instructor, Michael Janich. In addition to that I carry a Blackhawk Kalista (fixed blade) and a Spyderco Delica. The kalista and be Wharned are dedicated personal defense tools while the delica is used for everyday chores.

Well over the years I have carried averything from a, Buck folder, SOG StingRay, to the Spyderco line as well as numerous brand "multi-tools". Currently I carry either a Benchmade McHenry & Williams 710 SBK or a Benchmade 9100 SBK. Both of these knives deserve not to have photos posted as they are hard worked knives.

I tend to think that those are the ones that deserve to be seen most of all ... but I haven't subjected my well-worn CQC7/970SBT-L to this particular indignity, either. ;)

Alright...this thread has quickly become knife porn! [adore]

John, I have read some very good things about the ZT 300 series. I love the looks of that knife! Slightly Strider influenced but looks very well made and tough! I am curious of what you think after using for a while! I'm thinking I may need a new blade!

As for my knives...nothing too exciting.

On duty: CRKT M16 w/ tanto blade

I have used this knife for over ten years without ever needing to resharpen. For a cheap knife it can't be beat!

SWAT: Buck Strider FB G10 Handle ComboEdge

It maybe slightly bigger than what I need but it has been with me for 5 years of kickin doors and hasn't failed yet! This thing is bomb proof and far cheaper in price than an actual Strider!

TDB (Tactical Dad Bag):Gerber 45860 Air Ranger Serrated Edge Knife
This knife is such a smooth opener that it gets carried everywhere! Thin and easy to open make it a frequent carrier!

Firearms training: Buck 889 SBMF Strider Military folder

This knife has a great feel and looks even better! I love the OD handle as well!

Deployments: A 14 y/o used and abused USMC Ka-Bar outside the wire and a Benchmade 9053 auto the rest of the time.

Off Duty: Emerson Combat Karambit or CQC-14 "Snubby" (depending on the political/legal environment/location).

If I were to carry, I would carry my Spyderco serrated edge blade due to it's great at cutting ability on seat belts, rope, etc. It's ability to open with ease with one hand, and very sharp for defending myself, if needed.

I don't carry due to not knowing the laws of WA state yet on this. Being from CA originally, this would have been illegal for me to carry.

A little light reading for you on WA State Law: http://apps.leg.wa.gov/RCW/default.aspx?cite=9.41.250
WA does not have a preemption clause for knives (as it does for firearms), which leaves it wide open for local jurisdictions to craft their own local ordinances. I haven't come across any WA laws that prohibit the carrying of serrated blades specifically. Seattle Municipal code has an unusual ban on all fixed blade knives. Many have a blade length limit set to a maximum of 3.5".

i recently got one of these... it's huge. i wouldn't think it a daily carry "at the office."

but if you were doin' some real work the quality is amazing. lock up is very solid and the blade has no slop in the hinge. i was surprised at how sharp it was too, i'm used to my fallkniven and my benchmades... didn't expect to be impressed.

edit: just to add i think this knife was secretly made for lefties. if you do a one hand close with your left hand it automatically forces all your fingers out of the way, whereas if you to it with the right thumb you have to consciously move your fingers out of the way (i know who'd close their blade on a bunch of fingers, but just a lil bonus for us lefties out there)

I have been carrying a Strider GB since 2005. I second the concept of the knife as a "Tool" not simply a weapon. The strength of the blade has come in handy quite a few times busting open simple locks, ammo crates, cabinets. I carry it everywhere..regardless of what uniform. What I mean is "yes...its a big knife, but I still carry it comfortably on and off duty." I choose the strider for the durablity, I know it should take more than I ever need to dish out. So far it has...

The Smith knife has really been a good knife,

At work, I've got a S&W Extreme Ops folder in a sheath mounted to a duty belt, a Cold Steel neck knife between the shirt and vest and another Cold Steel Recon Tanto mounted to a drop rig for P-Mags and a Taser. Off-duty I've got whatever pistol and I alternate between a smaller S&W Extreme Ops and a Gerber folder.

Normally have a SOG folder of some sort on me. The Master Tanto is in the go bag. I really like the little Al Mar - extremely lightweight.

I am a big Benchmade fan, I don't know how many I have, but I usually carry my 710HS. I had a 750s but it has been lost for 3+ years and I've moved during that time, so I think it is gone forever. If anyone has a 750 they are trying to sell I might be willing to buy it off of you. I cannot find these anywhere anymore, since they have been discontinued for quite a while now :(. I occasionally carry a mini-grip if I can't carry my "big" 710. For deer/pig hunting I use my 140HS. This knife turned me on to the HS steel because I could butcher two hogs and a deer without having to stop and resharpen at any point. Other knives I've had to resharpen.

My next benchmade if it is not a 750 (or if I find my missing one) will be either a 520 or 5000 with a black plain blade. I live in TX so I can legally own the 5000, I just cannot carry it :(

I forgot to mention, I am neither military nor LEO, just an enthusiast, but believe me, I have great respect and admiration for all those that do need these kind of tools to serve this country, foreign and domestically.

I daily carry a Gerber Black Applegate Covert Folder which I've had since my deployment in 2003 which when I purchased I hand sharpened the false edge on the top. It's a decent knife for general purpose. Needs sharpening a few times a year since it's a soft metal though.

On my key chain I also carry a mini Swiss Army multi with blade, file/flathead, scissors, tweezers and toothpick (which I've lost)

I plan on getting a large fixed blade knife for when I go camping. I'll probably get a Ka-Bar or the USMC OKC3S bayonet.

I recently got this... I did a fair bit of research and I know there are a ton of options. I looked a lot at the SOGs and Kershaw's and a few others. Did a lot of YouTube research to watch the knives open and hear the pros and cons - very helpful for a hands on item like this. I knew I wanted to be under $100, as I am not super into knives per se, but also knew I could easily get one in that range for my EDC needs. This SOG consosntly gets great reviews all over the web time and time again. This is the most recent version with the newer style Arc-Lock thumb lock design (round button in a curved channel) versus the older style square button in a straight channel that people said was tough on the fingers.

Well, in the end, I found that the SOG really met my desired needs: OA, all black model available, tanto blade option, 1/2 and 1/2 serrated blade option, good belt clip, well under $100 - in the $50 range OTD.

Got it a few days ago and I am pretty impressed. The speed is frighteningly fast - or so it seems to me. Right out of the box it is smooth and hella sharp. Like, very sharp. The belt clip (reversible) is nice as the design means it is recessed in the pocket and you only see the clip and not the butt of the knife. The extra recessed lock button is a nice touch, even with the small colored tab to tell you it is live (red) or locked. Nice grippy grooved texture pattern in a solid Zytel plastic on the main grip surface is good as some of my all metal models - Spyderco - tend to get slick in my hand. Nice thumb and hand grooves on the spine are nice and a scalloped grip pattern on the inside (blade side) for grip of pointer and middle finger. 3.5" blade - 4.5" handle - overall length 8" - 3oz - AUS 8 Stainless Steel

Plus, I think it is just a good looking knife

This is EXACTLY what I got

http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/4186/sog.jpg

the knife (older config with older lock mechanism, but same knife)

I have the exact ZT 302 pictured above. Mini review - knife is sturdy and well built. Comes very sharp but can be brought up a bit. The 'assisted' opening device works great and is addictive but it is the only practical way to open the knife as the blade studs are to close to the grip when closed and sit flush with the scales. It has the least blade wobble of any folder I own (SOG's, Benchmades and Spyderco's) but it is also the most expensive knife I own. Only two real gripes. One is the weight. You wouldn't want to put this in the pocket of your gym shorts cause it will pull them down for you. But if weight is a major concern you probably wouldn't be looking for a knife like the ZT - 302. Second is the blade shape. Can be difficult to sharpen as it has some curves to it. But again this shouldn't be a knock against the knife cause you can see the blade shape before you purchase it. Overall I give it a 9 out of 10 and I carry mine every time I wear jeans.

I want to start off by saying you guys have some really nice blades. I have gone through a fist full of knives, none of which cost over $120.00. My current knife is S&W ExtremeOps auto w/ tanto tip and 1/2 serrated blade. It is a very cheap knife but it does everything I ask of it.
I have a history of loosing folding / pocket clip knives so I never invest big money into them. In addition, I use them to slip the locks on doors and other rough duty so they take a beating. If I bought a better knife I wouldn't be willing to abuse it; thus it wouldn't be of much use to me.
If I have to resort to my knife as a back up weapon I'm pretty sure I could shank some felon with it. [:D]

New to this site but a few of you will recognize my avatar. Thought this would be a good thread to get my feet wet.

On-duty, I carry a CRKT M16 LE 1* in my cargo pocket, a Victorinox Swiss Army in my opposite cargo pocket and have recently added a RAT Model 1 to my hand pocket.

My tactical gear has a RAT 7 on my vest, and a CRKT Crawford Companion attached to my Safariland drop leg holster for the mundane stuff.

I used to carry better knives but I am like quite a few people here in that I have a tendency to lose the good stuff. I don't cry as much if I break or lose a less costly knife and have found the quality of the CRKT knives in particular to be better than average.

When working I usually carry a ZT300 and an Emerson Mini-commander. I got the ZT as a sort of "poor man's Strider" and have been very happy with it so far.

The Emerson has a great edge, and I like the curved belly of the blade. My only complaint is that the screw at the pivot loosens up over time, and this allows the blade to wiggle side to side. If I tighten the blade down too much, I can't get the wave opening to work well.

For EDC off duty I just picked up a Spyderco Sage II titanium frame lock. I love this knife. S30 blade, titanium scales/frame lock, super light package. Very sharp blade, and with the wire loop clip, very unobtrusive as well. I liked it so much I ordered a titanium Military, and when it arrives it will possibly replace the Emerson.

I have had several of different types ranging from $50 to over $250. I do not like serrated edges or weird shaped blades. I wanted something that I could abuse and not feel bad if it got damaged. Something that would hold little to no sentimental value.
I carry a Benchmade Griptilian every day. The 154CM steel holds an edge great and is not difficult to sharpen. It has the best locking mechanism available for a pocket knife. The plastic handles make the knife light weight so it can clip on the waistband of your jogging shorts and other situations where you dont need a 12oz pocket knife.
Its not uber-tactical and doesn't need to be. It does just what it is designed to do......cut.

I bought this Gerber, man, ten years ago if not more, when I started doing commercial electrical work. That stuff is brutal, daily, on a knife. Stripping service wire making up high voltage stuff will separate the knife-men from the knife-boys pretty quick. It's been perfect, not a complaint.
I carry it every day still, belt sheath that it came with. I look at carry knives pretty regular, but none of them have motivated me to change.

Wondering Beard
3 December 2010, 09:49
I'm a bit of a knife nut and have used many different EDC knives over the years.

my latest purchase can be seen here (http://drop.io/SharpByCoop/asset/crawford-101121-jpg)

Obviously I didn't take the photo (all I have is a phone camera) but it is my actual knife.

It's a Crawford Kasper folder with a titanium handle and a framelock; the blade is 4 inches long. It's definitely beefy and the handle shape locks your hand in.

More information on the knife and its variants can be found here (http://www.crawfordknives.com/crawford_kasper_fighting_folder.htm)

Sadly, it will not be my EDC knife where I live because the laws here are so vague about knives that it is best to carry something quite a bit less conspicuous. As a result, my EDCs presently are the Blackhawk Crucilbe II on my left side and an Emerson CQC7A (the drop point variant) on my right. The Crawford folder will be carried in better jurisdictions.

I bought the Crawford Kasper at last month's NY knife show where I got to not only see beautiful blades but got to talk to extremely talented knifemakers and some interesting people (like Allen Elishewitz's wife). Specifically, I got to talk to Ernie Emerson a little about the inherent weakness, IMO, of the 'wave' system and mostly about the combative mindset which he was going to lecture on later that day.

All in all it was a wonderful show and I hope some of our members get to attend it in the future.

I just replaced my Buck folding knife I have had for over 10 years with a Kershaw Scallion. Love it so far. Different opening method, so still getting used to it. Like the looks of it as well.

This one:

http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/8774/img1078eb.jpg

Bought it in 1995, found it in my toolbox in 2010.

I don't know how long it's been missing for, almost a decade.

The tip used to be longer and more dramatic but it's snapped off twice - each time Spyderco had to repair it, it came back a little shorter.

They fixed it for free both times, too.

I have gotten away from serrated blades because the serrated edge always seems to be in the way. Just a personal preferance, must admit the serrations are handy for going through a line FAST though! I carry an AFO II everyday, can't go wrong with a Benchmade!http://www.benchmade.com/products/product_lgshot.asp?sku=pd987

Not too long ago I retired the Buck/Strider which was a great knife that I never worried about self destructing on my but it was a bit bulky. I have replaced it with a CRKT Anubis which I have really liked so far.

The other constant is the HAK that goes on in the morning and is the last thing to be removed before I pass out at night.

There are some great knives in this thread.

My EDC is a Benchmade 520SBK. I carried a discontinued Axis type for years, but I don't recall the number. Then I found the 520 at a gunshow. The first time I held the 520, I knew it was the one for me.

Here's what I carry for work every day- a Craftsman razor knife and a Leatherman. I carry a Benchmade Grip' when not working. For me the $10 Craftsman knife has been the best value. It's my second one in about 8yrs or so. I work in construction and am constantly cutting things in gravel, dirt, grease, etc. I can use the razor knife to cut geotextile fabric, etc and simply replace the blade when dull. It really allows me to do a lot with the knife I otherwise wouldn't with my Benchmade. I made the double knife sheath from Kydex to keep the Leatherman and razor knife handy and out of my pockets.

Sorry no pics as all I have is an IPhone and am lousy picture taker anyway, but I thought you might find my reasoning interesting (if only to critique it [:D])

I am presently abroad where it's impossible for me to carry any guns (never mind bring any) and my only defensive recourse (behind awareness and running away) are knives.

I'm carrying 3-4 folding knives daily.

Spyderco Endura with combo edge: I'm not and highly unlikely to be engaged in any activity that requires heavy knife work, so a light, reliable knife for typical chores gets the nod. It's carried in the left side pocket

Cold Steel Voyager 2X with a straight edge: this is my main defensive knife, carried on my right side. With a six inch blade and a long handle, I can defend myself up close and create some room as well as easily conceal it. The problems arise when it comes to opening it when there is little space (back against the wall or on the ground) so for the time when problems crop up at bad breath distance, I carry the following knives.

Emerson CQC7 B, straight edge in Black T: I have a whole lot of things I should dislike about this knife but it has the right size, the right handle, great ease of opening (if you're right handed), can easily be used as an impact or pain compliance weapon when closed, is superbly sharp and well .. it just plain grows on you. It's carried AIWB right side.

Blackhawk Hornet II, straight edge: a Chistmas present from my wife, the handle is a little small for my hands but it opens smoothly and rapidly, is easily concealed and will inflict devastating wounds for its size. It's carried AIWB left side.

The size, cutting power and brute strength of the locks of the two above knives make them near perfect (nothing is ever 100%) for when things are happening at belly to belly distance.

My last knife is generally dropped in a pocket and only when amongst "more civilized" folks. It's a Spyderco Vesuvius with the pearl like inset on one side. It's a very good "gentleman's knife" that comes out so as to "not frighten the horses" in "polite company".

I hope you found this interesting.

P.S. I chose not to carry any fixed blade knife because I am in tropical country where clothing is quite light. Certainly, a short fixed blade and sheath could be concealed but it's nowhere near as easy as with a folder and for the defensive duties I have in mind there isn't enough of an advantage.

I have most of those. None impressed me for useful function. I sharpen them to a razor's edge, my favorites are Vitornix Swiss Army, they use a special grade of Stainless Steel that stays Sharp no matter what I do with it. Next I also carry at least one Bowie Knife strapped to my inner shin.
Might be harder to get to, but it also comes in handy in blocking kicks. Also Stainless Steel Sharpened to a Razor's edge.

I've carried this Spyderco Delica every day for the last 13 years...I love it. Just the right size, locks like a bank vault door, and slips in and out of the pocket very easily. It's taken alot of abuse and it still looks amazing. I'm going to buy another before they're not made anymore. I always told myself I'd wait until this one broke. I'm getting impatient...

Bump.

With a job change in 2000, my choice of edged tool for EDC shifted from a single-blade folding knife to some flavor of Leatherman tool. First it was a 1st gen Wave, then a 2nd gen Wave (pocket clip), then a Charge XTi, and over the last couple years a Skeletool (aluminum; plain edge). Prior to that, I carried a Spyderco Delica, Cricket, or Native that was used mainly for opening boxes.

When I was on the township FD, an old Spyderco ClipIt rescue rode clipped inside the radio pocket on my turnout coat. A week before leaving the FD, somebody must have figured I wouldn't need it anymore, and it disappeared.

Every day I commute with a backpack. The backpack hauls my daily coffee and food stuffs, as well as a IFAK and few other 'just in case' items. One of the 'just in case' items is a fixed blade knife. Currently the fixed blade is a Ranger RAK.

I just picked up this ZeroTolerance 350ST. I've never had an assisted-opener before, but I gotta say, I really like this knife. IMHO, the thumb-stud doesn't work for me all as an opening mechanism, but the tang on the reverse end of the blade along with the spring-assist really makes for a quick-opening folder, pretty much as easy to open as any of my automatics.

As an EDC knife, this little guy works really well for my needs. Only a 2 inch blade and 2.75 inch overall length. I built it from a kit (http://www.knifekits.com/vcom/index.php?cPath=1_373) from knifekits.com, added a pocket clip. It's designed and sold as a button lock but I converted it to an automatic without much difficulty.

I've had my Gerber FAST Draw for about two years now. I received it as a free demo when the store I work at received a package from Gerber with various products trying to get us to be a dealer. It isn't the coolest knife on the market, but it gets the job done. I've used it for all sorts of tasks it is not designed for and it has held up great. Salt water doesn't seem to phase it. It has gotten a bit loose over time, but for a knife with an MSRP of $40 you can't ask for more.
http://www.gerbergear.com/Essentials/Knives/Fast-Draw-Knife_22-47162

I also carry a Leatherman MUT in blackened stainless. With an MSRP of $180, they aren't cheap, but the quality is excellent. It's designed in such a way that anything prone to breaking or wearing out can be replaced easily. If that doesn't work, you can fall back on Leatherman's 25 year warranty. I carry this whenever I leave the house in a belt pouch which is compatible with PALS webbing. It never fails to come in handy.

But while trying to keep my Sig in it's holster and wrestling with this guy there was no way to get my Kerhaw blur from my strong side pocket. I now carry a fixed blade in my weak hand front pocket, if someone goes for my sidearm I can just reach in my front pocket pull out the fixed blade and make the guys day end bad if he doesn't let go.

Well as an everyday carry in my pocket useful knife, I have a real Swiss Army pocket folder that is very useful to me. It has a phillips screwdriver, and standard. I use the phillips alot, and also the little scissors. I have 4 kids, so they always have some toy that needs the batteries replaced, and the scissors are passed aorund at every birthday party, and anytime people need to open stuff. For hunting I recently got a Gerber LMFII. Really like how versitile it is, and can be carried in almost endless ways.

I've been carrying a knife almost every day since I was in Jr. High School. I started out with a Buck 110, which took me through more than 20 years. I retired it for a Spyderco Delica. It is beat to hell, tip busted, acid scarring, but still sharp and functional. I'm carrying it currently after bringing it out of retirement along with a Leatherman Supertool. I really like the old-school molded pocket clip as I've lost a newer model Delica at the range when the clip unscrewed itself (even though it was locktited). I also carried a Spyderco Wegner, but it was a bit big for normal box cutting/work use. So I moved it over to my vest. My Bug Out Bag has a Terry Primos fixed blade (utility profile) and a Himilayan Imports AK khukri... and I have a Cold Steel Trailblazer as a backup.

I'm looking at getting a couple of Zero Tolerance models (300 and the 121), but haven't quite pulled the trigger. I'm also thinking about a Jeremy Horton too.

The Shallot is in my front right hand pocket and the Skyline is in my back left hand pocket. I use the Skyline for the "cleaner" cutting needs, usually fruit and the Shallot i use for almost everything else. The Shallot is an assisted open knife. I also have a Benchmade griptillian tanto and an other Kershaw assisted that i have to send back to Kershaw. First batch of their assisted knives which had a selector switch on the back of the knife. After about 5 years the assist stopped working. I love my Kershaws though. My griptillian couldnt keep an edge worth a damn.

I love that little pocket protector that ZKK posted up. I think i am going to go with something like that for my next knife buy.

Much like Stick in the OP, I am no knife expert, I just like what feels good in my hand and what stays sharp and easy to open.

From right to left:

For the first few years of my career, I carried a Gerber Applegate folder. It was a gift, and thus I carried it.

I then got the S&W Knife as I got sucked into the "cool" looks. It sucked.

I then went through a Benchmade phase with the auto's. The Mel Pardue was too small, and after I got the other, I decided Benchmade auto's were too nice to carry on duty.

Since the Benchmades were pricey, I went with the Gerber Auto. The Gerber was too bulky in my opinion.

Then I got a SOG Flash II as a gift, but didn't like the blade.

The last knife is a SOG Trident Tanto. Loved it, and carried it, until some asshat at work stole it after I dropped it. Liked it so much, I got the same knife again.

Carried an Emerson Gentleman Jim custom for a couple days along with the XM-18s. Stopped because of the hard use I put the Hinerers through, I was unsure if the blade style of the Emerson would hold up as well. Not questioning the design or intergrity of an Emerson...that would be foolish...but I would not use the Emerson liek a prybar and I have opened crates with my Hinderer. No damage.

Over the years I've switched between a couple folders, primarily from my first CRKT M16 to my current Emerson CQC-7. While I like the construction of the Striders and Zero Tolerance so far I haven't had the need for the thickness and weight of those types yet. I know both types have solid construction, though so far for daily duties my Emerson fits the bill nicely. For something even lighter I'm also considering taking a look at their A-100.

Benchmade Adamas 275. Sharp, substantial and dulls very slowly. Both open with the slightest flick, making them as if not more accessible than autos. Both are high value for low to moderate cost.

I recently purchased a Zero Tolerance 0350TS and it's quickly becoming my go-to knife. A 3 1/4" blade is at the upper end ofsize for me ad it's a very hefty chunk of metal. Despite this, I find it extremely comfortable and tend to overlook the bulk.

Desipte my growing preference for this knife, it's not for everyone. I've tried to present an image that depicts several of the (positive and negative) features.

Pros:
- Opening: I really like the SpeedSafe design - it's fast, simple and does not require wrist motion to open. Those who might look for a thumb-assisted opening should look elsewhere, the 350's studs are difficult to use for assisted opening,
- Blade: It's solid and stable.
- Grip: The G10 seems stickier than the G10 on my other knives. The spine of the blade has a large thumb depression which can provide a solid 3-point grip for those of us with larger hands.
- Safety: The SpeedSafe cam provides enough tension that I don't worry about inadvertent opening. Because the assist lever becomes a quillon when the blade is deployed, there is extra assurance that the blade cannot close on the grip hand were the liner lock to fail, even if you're applying pressure to the blade's spine. It might crush a fingers, but not cut them.
- Fits and Finish: It's exceptional. The alignment of G10 scales and frame is smooth and the blade centers well when closed.
- Curb Appeal: The stripes were a concession for my daughter, she likes knives and adores animals.

Cons:
- Maintenance: This one is a biggie. The combination of S30V steel and the slightly recurved blade makes sharpening this knife pretty difficult. My existing tools are better suited other designs, I'll have to supplement my kit to get the kind of edge I like.
- Scale attachment: A nitpick here, the scales are attached by round-head screws which protrude from the grip - something that I think was done to mirror the look of the pivot screw. I've found that some of the ways I grip the knife puts my fingers on these screws - it's a tiny bit annoying. It's weird that I don't mind the clip, but these little bumps can bug me.

All in all, I'm really liking this one so far.

Reviving an old thread.....

A few months back, I upgraded to an Emerson Desert Roadhouse BT (3.8") folder.

I've also acquired, and now regularly carry, a Spartan Enyo (2.7") in FDE.

I used to EDC a Cold Steel Spartan, SOG Trident Tanto, and a Gerber multitool, however I don't carry near as much on me since getting my CCW. I've carried a ZT0350, Leatherman Wave, and Surefire P2X Fury for a little over a year now, and I am really liking the setup in addition to my G19.

http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/b637/jjl103/IMG_20140312_101203_zpsd481c94e.jpg

EDIT: Posted before I was done..

I think the 350 is a great knife, not too big, not too small, and it completes every day tasks just fine (cutting boxes, rope, straps, cables, stripping wires, as well as some rare heavier use). Its definitely not a Cold Steel Spartan, but its large enough I think for a situation where I'd need it to defend myself (when the G19 can't I guess?). The wave is definitely a step up from the old gerber multi-tool. The steel used is much better, it doesn't get damaged with simple tasks, and i find that the blades/file are much more usable than the one on the gerber. Obviously they weight a bit, but I'm not entirely convinced that saving 2 oz on my knives is really a concern since I also carry a G19 and 2 mags. I feel that the weight is well worth it because I use them daily and I don't ever find myself being talked out of carrying them because of the weight.

I purchased this Spyderco Endura about 20 years ago and managed to snap off the poly clip. Spyderco was able to mill the rest of the clip flush and install a steel clip, which worked great. I then managed to loose it in the trunk of a Crown Vic for several years and it was replaced. I just came across it again this evening. I wouldn't go the serrated blade route again, but the Endura design is here to stay.

Emerson CQC-10. After finally convincing Ernest and his crew to make a round-hole/waved knife (despite Ernest's protestations that "the disk is better"), the least I can do is carry it. Sometimes I wish it were a bit more svelt, but I haven't fouls anything that works as well for me since I got it.

I've recently changed my carry a bit. I now EDC a DPx Gear H.E.F.T. 4. I really enjoy having the blade sit on my belt. It frees up a whole pocket for more uses, and the functionality of it is nice as well. It's proven to be a sturdy blade so far.

Not pictured, I've stopped carrying the Leatherman Wave in exchange for a Leatherman Squirt ES4. I find that I use the wire strippers much more often than I do the full size pliers, and when I need some full size pliers, the wave is either in the car, or I am near my full tool kit. I can also use the tip of the squirt as pliers if I am ever in a pinch, and the wire strippers are something I've actually wished I wasn't without on multiple occasion. The Squirt is also about a quarter of the weight or more, which makes it really easy to forget about during the day.

Since I EDC a Glock 19, I like to dress pretty casually - a normal day for me has me in a pair of Dockers' cargo khakis. I feel the less I have clipped to my pockets, the less people will suspect that I am someone carrying a gun, and that is the way I like it.

I tried this AFO for EDC, just too big. I have a ZT 350 and an SKD 360, great knives but just too big for me to EDC. Back to the old mini-Reflex. Still works best for me...just the right size.

Yes. It's a very robust knife. Absolutely no complaints except that it's just too big to carry around in dress slacks.

I used to carry a Benchmade Adamas, but after a while I ditched it. It was just too bulky, felt just a bit off in my hand, and all in all I never really used it. It was just a something I'd drop in my cargo pocket daily. I went back to a Gerber multi tool for an EDC and haven't looked back. For my needs, it was just the most practical.

SOG Access Card 2.0 and gaudy stay-at-home.

The little guy won out over some much more expensive blades because it's thin and whips open easily with pull-back button. Took off the clip cuz I hate them. If I was not packing heat, I'd carry one of my larger knives. Probably not the toothpick.

Axis is the shit. To the point that I'm about to pull the trigger on a G10 grip/scale set for one. I just need to dig up the old Griptillian I have with the Spyderco hole. Axis + hole + g10 = perfect carry knife!

Kershaw 3" Swerve
Kershaw 3.5" RJ I

http://i1310.photobucket.com/albums/s643/Lopann06/KershawGroup1_zps5a674377.jpg

Probably like the RJ I the best, its the quickest open and the G10 grips are the most grippy. The Cryo has the nicest feel, and the Swerve is easily the sharpest out of the three. So guess I'll have to keep carrying them all until I decide on one.
