Purpose: Mule deer hunting.

After deliberating between 6.5 Grendel and 6.8 SPC, I decided on the latter. I wanted a 16" barrel and 6.8 is better suited for it. It has all the energy I need out to 350 yards and a wide variety of factory ammo selection. I don't reload yet.

Special thanks to BoilerUp for his time in answering questions about the 6.8 caliber and steering me in the right direction (at least it better be the right direction. ;) ).

Camo treatment by Axlnut (KM3 Solutions). We came up with this pattern and call it "winter swamp grass." It's inspired by a danish pattern yet these colors suits the autumn and early winter view of my hunting grounds.

Parts of interest:

SMOS GFY set (non-logo).
Barrel: ARP 3R 16".
BCG: ARP with modified bolt.
Buffer: A5
Trigger: Planning on a TriggerTech
Mags: PRI gen 3.

Will update as it comes together.

Nice work Axlnut. Can't go wrong with ARP. One of my favorite barrels

Edit: When you say modified bolt do you mean a superbolt?

I loved doing this set and can't wait to see it come together.

When you get total freedom to do a camo and then try something completely outside the norm it's always a bit scary, but I love the way it came out. There's a bunch of little details (the EO grip/panels), the series inside the magwell and that subdued logo that I am super proud of - can't thank Fledge enough for trusting me to go crazy.

My ARP bolt destroyed the brass for some reason. Switched to a JP bolt and never had an issue again. I know people have just switched to the JP extractor with good results. My 18" ARP is very accurate with even low end ammo.

I've not read this about the ARP bolt. I'll keep an eye on it. I was planning on the JP bolt but figured if the ARP bolt did the same and came headspaced, it was the best place to start.

I haven't heard that either. Curious as to why that was happening? Too much meat on the bolt face?

No idea. It was deforming the rim during extraction. Acted like a tight chamber or headspacing issue to be honest. Headspacing checked out fine. Found the JP bolt and the claims it reduced brass damage and it did. Their bolt also claims to improve ejector swipes but I never had that issue.

That camo looks killer BTW

I do really enjoy shooting the 6.8. Even with the boring Cerakote. Lol

Love the faded WEVO logo.

Another great job by KM3

Yes it is. The FFP version. Bought 2 of them for $399 each when they were discontinued. No way I'd pay the $700 they were going for but at that price they are a good deal.

I'm not generally a fan of winter camo. But the purpose dictated the treatment and we ran with it. Now the deer will see my jeans and flannel but not the rifle. LOL

The next project will have KM3's classic woodland. It's in his hands at the moment.

Just dry fire testing I like it so far. This is the non-adjustable version.

It feels more like a one stage than two with how light and short the first stage is. The break is crisp without any creep. The reset is short. Fit/finish is tops. Well priced for the quality I think.

Same here. Sold one to my neighbor. Was your magnification dial really difficult to turn? I had to go with a throw lever...it still hasn't loosened up.

And OP, I can't like that pattern enough. More pictures ;)

I sent both mine back because after not using them for about 5-6 months it got so hard you had to reposition the rifle to turn the ring. Pretty much finished with Vortex after these. Have yet to own one that didn't go back for service. Out of 7. Explains why all their fans always say how great their service is. Not sure if Nightforce or Trijicon even have a service dept. LOL

.

It really surprised me considering none of the other Vortex scopes I had were even half that difficult to turn. The throw lever solved the issue...but before that I couldn't keep my position behind the rifle and adjust it.

Sorry for the thread drift, OP

Trust me, you do not want to deal with trijicon customer service. Their minimum turnaround is listed as 3+ weeks. I had a ta33 acog where the mounting lug was cut wrong so it would sit canted in every mount. I sent it in, returned 6 weeks later and they said the reticle was level, even though that wasn't the issue. Sent it in again, they held onto it for 3 months before finally giving me a brand new ta33.

End result was fine. Length of time and mailing it in twice because they fail at reading comprehension sucked. The 5 months I couldn't use the optic made me realize I didn't even need it so I sold it as soon as the replacement came, and made a profit.

Nightforce, on the other hand, is quick and easy to deal with.

Finally done but for a dedicated optic.

Need to settle on a good mule deer factory load. But for now, federal FMJ and SB FMJ were 1.5MOA in the wind at 100yrds. Would love opinions on a good hunting round that doesn't break up on impact.

Trigger impressions: the brake is firm. I don't have a scale to measure it but it feels every bit of 3.5. No creep. Light takeup and crisp in every way. Good for hunting and duty but would prefer lighter second stage for precision work. I have another one on the way for another rifle.

This is my first time shooting 6.8. I was impressed how soft it shoots. I didn't expect that. I have the SA gas block dialed back a little but left it mostly open. I'll tinker more with it another day.
