has anyone tried a SpecOps upper?

Wondering what the quality of the SpecOps uppers are, if anyone has ventured out to buy one and/or shoot one. i'm working on a budget build for a buddy and landed on this one: https://www.specopmfg.com/56223-ar15...arrier_group_0 less than 400 for a complete upper (minus BCG) doesn't sound too bad to me. the only thing that worries me about this is the info on the barrel are different in two places. one says 1:7 twist, and just a little lower has 1:9...

Never owned one, or shot one...... BUT right now it's a buyers market. I bet you can put together an upper for the same money using quality components.

The other option is a complete Aero Precision Upper, as they use Ballistic Advantage barrels. Basically the same money.

Never heard of them, but ordering AR parts from NY reminds me of the old Pace Picante Sauce commercials...

I know Lisle isn't NYC. I actually used to live not far from there and have been through Lisle many times.

thanks for the tip! but what is a "pencil length gas tube"? also, when it says "handguard mounting hardware is FORGED into the receiver", does that mean i can only ever use the handguard that it comes with? i guess i should probably be asking aero about this...oh well...

also, i tried to put together an inexpensive upper, but i kept running over budget when it came to the barrel. i'm looking for a 16" mid length gas barrel, but i honestly don't know what to look for when it comes to quality vs price.

Not sure where you are seeing the pencil length gas tube verbage. Link?

The Enhanced Uppers do have the barrel nut part of the upper, so yes, you will be limited to Aero M4E1 Handguards or Seekins BAR type handguards.

What kind of shooting is this gun going to see? Precision oriented? Or general carbine use/paper punching/dirt shooting?

https://aeroprecisionusa.com/m4e1-16...ete-upper.html the "pencil length gas tube" verbage is in the "includes" section, the 4th or 5th bullet point.

and the guy i'm making it for is rather new to shooting, so i would assume mostly paper punching and whatnot. he does have a .308 he likes to do some distance work with. but i can't be sure. he's got some land he can shoot on so it's hard to say.

The pencil part is a typo. Mid length gas tube is what it should say.
