Coupler for PMAG?
A co-worker said that he had used a CAA magazine coupler to join two PMAG's together. He said that it was a tight squeeze, but he got them in okay. Since I have been looking for a coupler that will fit PMAG's, I figured that I would try it out. Well, it didn't last very long. Neither did the second one after I broke the first one. So after breaking two couplers I decided to google for a PMAG coupler and I came across a "Springer Precision Firebird PMag Coupler".

Interesting concept, but I just cannot justify spending over $40 (after shipping) for something that I use to do with 100MPH tape. Does anyone know of a reliable product that will couple two PMAG's together?Last edited by zero7one; 24 March 2009 at 22:12.

I don't know of a source for these, though my impression was that the practice of mag coupling was becoming much less prevalent in view of the Redi-Mag option, and manipulation trends in general. I know that I've seen much less of it in military applications over the past few years, though it hasn't entirely disappeared. Just to be clear, are you talking about a reverse coupling, or side-by-side with a spacer?

I have been running with the CAA side by side mag coupler, with my PMAGs, for a while now. It was a task to get them in there and to get them properly adjusted. I could clearly tell that the coupler wasn’t made for PMAGs but after all the effort it seems to work just fine for me. I have dropped the empty twins from the well to the floor several times and the coupler is still holding tough.
As Chief pointed out, coupling has lost some of its popularity. I’m not a big fan of it myself; I just went with it for policy reasons at work. If I have time to properly gear up I load up a single mag in the rifle and have my extras on my vest or in my go-bag. I keep the coupled mags in my gun so I always have at least two mags if I have to grab my rifle on the run.

The best coupler for PMAGs is the Firebird from Springer Precision.

glad, or actually, sad to read the CAA couplers failed on the pmags.. I was going to buy those exact ones - thanks for the heads-up.
As for the Springer Precision - I give them a 10 on concept and execution. Very cool idea. However, these are (1) way to costly for me and (2) not really CA compliant unless you want to permanently epoxy them to 2 pmags. Since to make a pmag 10 rnd CA compliant one of the final steps is to epoxy the floor plate to the mag to make it a 'permanent' modification, these would not work since they are the floor plate and you would have to epoxy them onto your 2 mags or risk getting busted with a 10rnd mag that is easily modified back to a 20 or 30 rnd.
The redi mag is way cool & no doubt fastest method I have seen - at least Travis makes it look that way.. but it is fugly & too bulky for my tastes.

if you are worried about california compliance you should not even be thinking of a coupler. the coupler can be interpretted as joining two magazines and turning them into one magazine feeding device. this essentially makes the "one" magazine a "high capacity" magazine. look on calguns, there's a thread on this and a warning from hoffmang.

scumhunter actually gave me an extra CAA coupler and I had no problems with it either. Took a bit of fine tuning but it works fine! I am not a big fan of coupled mags because the weight is more than I care for. I think the idea of the Firebird is very original and looks pretty solid.

I should note that I have Ranger Plates on the bottom of my coupled mags. I'm sure they help the coupler from breaking when they get dropped to the floor.

yep I know gene on the Calguns.. their site search sucks, so I use that custom Google search tool, and that only turned up these 2. So if I just look at majority opinion... but I do not care that much as the only real affordable options is the CAA models and now I am a little leery. I have bigger fish to fry anyway so not worries
