20” build

So. This was my first build. I completed it Oct ‘16, but never really had anywhere to actually share it. Took me 1.5yrs to pinpoint what parts I really wanted. Build once, cry once. Nothing really high dollar, minus the handguard. Personally, I love it. Not DIALED IN, well, I’ll post that picture too. We ran out of time that day, and don’t have any current grouping pics of it.

I think thats everything. I stole that scope from another gun just to get it shooting. Once I get back to work, the scope and mounts will change to a dedicated setup. And add a good bipod. Otherwise, it turned out exactly what and how I was hoping for. I’ve gotten a lot of compliments on the gun, so please be gentle. Don’t hurt my feelings too much. Lol. And the target group is at 100yds. First time shooting it. I was only shooting 62gr that day. Haven’t tried heavier. With that barrel I probably should though.

Congrats on your build. Looks nice and looks like you've got a shooter. I can't tell if you mounted the P-Series mount incorrectly and then fixed it, or the other way around. I'm not a fan of those mounts but you already mentioned you plan to upgrade. I've had good luck with Fiocchi 77 gr SMK factory ammo. At 100 yards, heavier bullets won't really matter, though.

My precision AR has a 1:8 twist and it shoots 69gr pills like a dream. You should get better than average results with 69-77gr bullets. That is if you are going for groups.

And yes that scope mount--- I am not sure but it does look like its not mounted properly.

Overall it looks like it will be a fine shooter.

Why are people worried about the scope mounts? Haha. Between the LOP of the stock and the needed eye relief, mixed with the setup/length of the scope I had to turn one of the mounts around to make it work. So it is what it is. It works.

And I’ll definitely have to try the 69’s and 77’s some point soon. Too cold in VA right now to go shooting. For some reason, I wanted to try 62’s first. I think they had a low quantity of 69’s, so, I compared 62’s. I’ll try the others when it warms back up. And its definitely made for longer than 100yds. Thats just all I could reach out to that day. I built it as a varmint gun, so I’m planning on 2-300 yards realistically. Coyotes, groundhogs, whatever else I can find.

While your setup looks fine for bench shooting, you may find it lacking when you get out in the field to hunt. You don't see many scopes that far back on an AR

Every scope of mine is in that position, or even farther back. And I hate bench shooting. Anthropametrics is going to determine the best position for each shooter. If it works and he's getting a full field view in the scope, then it's tough to argue with.

If you look at the last two photos when he was shooting, that optic is a good 2-3" further back than any of yours.

And I'm not sure how you even shoot with that Elcan that far back. I felt like mine had too much eye relief to comfortably use on a AR platform. Over 3" it seemed to me.

You are correct. I completely missed the range pictures.

If you'll notice in my pics, the stocks are collapsed for picture taking, but if an optic allows, I like to run my stock either 5 or 6 (max) clicks out (or 3 or 4 for the Colt lowers). That's why I run the Elcan farther back. I have long arms, so it's more comfortable to push the rifle forward. With the G33s, I still have to come in a click (or two) to get a solid full-field view.

That's what I was trying to point out. Doesn't work with from the prone, or a tactical crouch position, IMO, unless you like scope eye.

That's what I was trying to point out. Doesn't work with from the prone, or a tactical crouch position, IMO, unless you like scope eye. Those are the pics with the questioned mount placement. No big deal to the OP; run it how you like it.
