Serial Numberrs

My P80 "Glock" was put assembled and done about the same time as my last AR lightweight AR was and I'm confused about one thing. Not sure it belongs in this thread, but folks here seem to know a lot about ATF reg's so I'll try it here.

The kit included a thin strip that goes under the frame like an actual Glock, for the serial number.

I really don't feel real comfortable about carrying and/or transporting a weapon without a serial number, as I would bet that the majority of cops probably don't know anymore about it than I do, and the red flags might literally explode from every angle, if for some reason they want to inspect my firearm during a traffic stop, or for whatever reason.

Can I just put my own serial number on, or do I have to contact the ATF and get "assigned" one or what?

EDIT: Sorry about any confusion. This project was an 80% receiver project, thus no serial number.
