    Ruger Small Frame AR 308

Recently announced, Ruger is back in the 308 AR market.

The previous entrant, the SR-762, was dropped some years ago. A fun and interesting rifle in its own right, but the 762 was fairly big and heavy. It was based on the more traditional 308 receiver set.

The new rifle is called the SFAR. SF standing for small frame. Ruger has shrunken the overall platform down to 223 size in many respects. This has been done by a few other companies before but Ruger seems to have taken the concept just a bit further than everyone else.

Parts commonality is the big thing here. Reportedly the SFAR uses an AR15 barrel nut so other hand guards will fit. AR15 charging handles are also compatible as is furniture. The 16" model uses a midlength gas tube with a rifle length being used on the 20" model. Gas seats are .750 on both.

The gas block is low profile and is adjustable for suppressor use. It also includes an off setting. No reports yet on how tall the block is and whether or not it will need to be changed if and when switching hand guards.

The buffer tube is 6 position and contains a standard carbine buffer. It is longer than standard AR15 length. Maybe A5 length? It would be nice if that's the case since the A5 has become somewhat of its own standard.

Price is really quite good with an MSRP of $1229. If Ruger stays to usual pricing, MSRP and gun store price will be quite different. We can probably expect these guns to sell for $900 or so.

Big question now is how well this pattern will catch on. Will it become a recognized size? Will companies like Ballistic Advantage and Faxon start making barrels? What about high end companies like Proof Research? Maybe the aftermarket will provide an 8.6 option.

And what are Ruger's plans for the SFAR? Will we see a 6 or 6.5 Creedmoor option?

And the rifle itself. This one being the 16" variant.
