    Really torn about 6ARC

My son (11) shot a deer last season with my .308, but its still a little too much the way its configured in terms of length and weight for him to carry around and manage with the suppressor and everything

Im debating two courses of action:

    Buy a 16in 6ARC like the Ruger American Gen 2;
    https://www.ruger.com/products/ameri...ets/46926.html

OR convert one of my 16in 5.56 ARs to 6ARC. Only issue, the Proof carbon fiber 16 drop-in Im interested in is about $100 more than the Ruger rifle itself and Id still need a BCG and mags. CF is a full pound lighter than the stainless version and I think it would be better for a rifle that would be carried a good bit

Ive had excellent results from my other Proof stainless drop-in so thats the reason I was looking at the Proof CF

Id get a new optic for either one suited to the purpose so not really factoring that in

I guess the question is more do I do get an entirely new rifle or convert one I dont use much

I say it depends. After he gets a couple of years older what are the odds that he will 'out grow' the one rifle?

As for converting your other one you would need a bolt and mags. I wouldn't see the need to get a high dollar barrel for the intended use...

On balance for the use case you mentioned I would definitely lean towards the bolt action. I would say 80/20 in favor of the bolt gun.

Add a suppressor and you will be right there.

Making a 16"gasser in 6 ARC run might be a little more involved.

He could use my new mod Griffin Explorr .30 cal, its like 6.5in and 10oz or use it as an excuse to get an Optimus 6

Another point with the rifle itself; probably easier to sell the entire rifle if I end up not liking the performance of it than a very expensive niche barrel

And nothing says I cant change barrels in the AR if the bolt gun is a hit

I am running an Explorr 30 on my 6 ARC.

I definitely would not classify 6 ARC as niche. I actually like mine a lot.

The reason why I lean towards the bolt gun is that he's 11.

The second factor is the cartridge is kind of gassy. I have a rifle length gas system. I am running a very heavy buffer and an adjustable block. I had to do some tuning something akin to making my 10.5" 5.56 run smoothly to slow it down some. If I recall correctly I'm running a 5.6oz buffer in a suppressed 24" rifle.

It's not the end of the world but I did have to sort it out. Now it's pure butter. It's possibly my favorite one to shoot now.

I bought a custom barrel way back in the early stages of the 6 ARC and didn't know what I didn't know. If I were to do it again I would probably ask for a reduced gas port or a longer gas system. I was just shooting in the dark at the time so I just made it work, but as I said it's my favorite one now.

Going like 16" or shorter with a 6 ARC I would ask around more now that it's out there and people have more experience with it in that configuration.

I put a Bartlein 24inch 6ARC in a buddys Seekins precision rig. I believe it was rifle +1 or +2

Was a little picky on mags but ran fine otherwise; a 16 inch mid length might be a totally different story

Mine is a sample of one but I definitely would pay attention to the gassing going forward.

In a bolt gun, just let it rip.

I believe the Dead Air Lazarus 6 is 6arc too. Its compact and their new line is pretty impressive and durable. Not to mention short

Just an opinion, but I've never been a fan of bolt actions chambered in cartridges that we designed to solve the constraints of the AR platform. Might as well stick with the old .243 at that point if you really want a 6mm. A flavor of 6.5 might be a better choice.

So, if you've decided on 6ARC and just deciding on the platform, then why not stick with the platform for which the 6ARC was designed? Can you go SBR (pistol) length? If suppressing, I'd rather to an SBR, then they weight savings from CF stops dropping off too.

Personally, my 'deer gun' is a 12.5 6.8 SPC AR

My hog gun is a 18? 6.8 SPC. Kills them real good.
