    Ammo?

I didn't know which thread to ask some questions regarding ammo, if there is a regular "Ammo" thread please let me know.

I never have issues finding ammo in the calibers I use but a friend of mine is having a heck of a time getting his .308 ammo. Yesterday I went with him to a local gun range to try and locate the ammo he was looking for, with no luck and we got to talking to the guy behind the counter.

Now, in my area the "Obama Scare" seemed to subside, there aren't lines and people grabbing anything and everything they can. However, when we were talking to the gunshop guy he blamed the lack of available ammo on two things, one being that the ammo manufacturers are stockpiling ammo to drive the price up and two that the "government" is keeping it from being released so there isn't another spike in ammo sales. He said he had a "Source" in the ammo industry who told him this.

So in short, I am asking if ammo shortage is still a problem for everyone else and if so , does anyone know the cause?

    Thanks in advance.

    Jim1973,

What type of .308 ammo is your buddy looking for? I will admit .308 is not cheap to purchase but I don't think there is a known shortage. The large supplies of surplus .308 ammo which was available 7-8 years ago have dried up but you can still find it if your willing to pay for it.

I think people are just at a point where they have slowed down their purchasing yet are still stockpiling ammo for a rainy day.

He can't get anything in bulk, but you are right he is able to find enough to do range shoots (1-2 boxes) when he needs to, usually a combination of cheap but expensive ammo.

His preferred choice right now is Black Hills 165-178 Gr.
Currently I know if only one dealer within 50 miles of seattle that has it in stock and they will only sell by the box.

I was thinking of calling Black Hills myself and seeing if I can order directly from them if I have a FFL intermediate.

    Thanks for responding Dutch!

Cabela's has Black Hills .308 offered on their web site

    http://www.cabelas.com/p-0012680213641a.shtml

I've bought ammo [5.56 or .223] from them when they have sale prices or free shipping. They have a store in NV so I pay sales tax, but they offer products I can't find locally.

I use this web searcher for pricing, and frankly, to just see what is in the market and what prices are charged on the civilian level.

What exactly are the laws about ordering ammo online?

Is it like guns, do they need to be delivered to someone with a FFL?

    Thanks

As long as your legally allowed to own the firearm that uses the ammo, you can just have it shipped to your front door.

Most of the online dealers only require that you fax or email a copy of your drivers license as proof of age.

Here are a couple of links for good sources. They both have .308 in stock.

He may be but I've never had any problems with the ammo I bought from him, either in the customer service and shipment or the ammo itself.

IMHO, I do not see a ammo shortage. A buddy who frequents Walmart and other fine stores see the shelves stocked. The hunting/outdoor stores have stock on hand.
The "wildcat" ammo may be a bit hard to obtain, 6.8, 6.5, etc, but are slowly gaining a market segment and holding steady. In some states, such as California, be aware ordering on line maybe a thing of the past. New laws coming into effect may hinder the vendor sending it to you, check your state laws before ordering.

The 308/7.62 market is growing because of the renewed interest in the AR 308 platform. I encourage you and a few good buddies to learn to re-load the standard calibers such as 223/556, 308/7.62, 9mm, 45 ACP, 40 S&W. Don't fear the hype out there. Many of the shooters I hang with, SASS, IDPA, IPSC, & LEO/MIL, have no trouble ordering bulk ammo. They all learned to head to the outdoor shows and get ammo. The websites listed are decent and have what you need. Black Hill, Silver State, and other manufactures do offer on line sales but as many here said, proof of age, valid DL and other info are needed.
