    .308 vs. 6.5 Grendel?

.308 vs. 6.5 Grendel: Any experts here have any idea which would make a superior long range round for a sniper style rifle? If I am correct, the 6.5 Grendel will work with a standard AR lower. Is either round good for hunting big game? Any thoughts from the knowledgable ballistics crowd?

I am by no means expert----however I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.....

    I have a 6.5 Grendel 20" with JP/VTac rifle length freefloat
4-16x50 Vortex Illuminated Reticle Mildot scope
lightened milspec trigger. A friend tried it out yesterday and told me for a milspec trigger with $10 worth of Brownells/JP springs in it it's the nicest he's felt outside of an RRA NM 2 stage.

I know Mark Larue (Larue Tactical) had a 400-something yard kill (bison??) with a 6.5 Grendel. Scratch---it's Elk.

308win/762x51 is a damn fine round. Recoil's a little heavier but ammo is significantly more available. To me I'll invest in a .308 rifle one day. I much prefer AR15 platforum due to it's light weight and lower cost of building a great rifle. I've purchased great magazines as low as $9. You can't do that on an Ar10 platform. Recoil is lower and the 6.5 Grendel now has Hornady making ammunition for it. Sweet. It still costs $1/rd with Hornady but reloading can be as little as $0.30/ea and knowing you have an AR15 platform rifle that can keep a bullet supersonic to 1200 yards is appealing.

Why I own a Grendel: "You don't shoot 6.5 bullets. You toss them in the air, they go downrange on their own."

There are no such things as problems. There are only opportunities for solutions. And I've arrived at a solution for you.

For handloading, 6.5 Grendel is an extremely attractive round, but to fully appreciate it you're going to want a high end barrel, free floated upper, and some other match-type components - in my view at least.
With the PMag 20-.308 magazines, the SR25 platform is coming into it's own, though the M1A and FAL are still quite viable. Of course a Rem700 short action may work best if follow up shots aren't as time-sensitive.

For very large game, .308 would be the smalled I'd go, and a short magnum or something might be a touch more attractive. If this is the FL area, then Grendel should still be quite adequate.

Thanks Guys! Always helps to talk to folks who know more than myself. Appreciate what you both said.

Just figured out that the Mega Monolithic setup is compatable with the Grendel barrels too. I didn't know that. I guess the bolt and barrel is the only difference? If true, that's great news for me. If someone knows something different I would really appreciate you passing on the knowledge. Thanks!

If you are looking for an upper receiver to use with your existing lower, the 6.5 is worth a look, however, the .308 has a MUCH larger ammunition availability.

Will 6.5 really stay supersonic out to 1200m?

    I believe a 24" with a 140gr VLD will stay supersonic to 1200

So true. Might just go the 20" 6.5 Grendel route. 308 would require another lower.

Got a 20" 6.5 Grendel upper from Precision Firearms. Stuck in on a Bushmaster lower.

Finally got it out a week ago.

I loaded 12 rounds for sighting and first loads. They are 100 gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips over H322.

It took two shots at 50 yds. to get to black. Moved the target back to 100 yds. and it took another two shots to get back to black.

Then started on this target with shot #5, dialed three clicks left, shot two more, #6 & #7. Three more clicks left, then shot five shots.

Since this is intended to be a pig rifle, I will leave it sighted in for 100 yds. I'll bring it back one click right.

Get an AR10 lower and have the upper built in 243 or 260rem forget grendal.

Great shooting! Especially with a brand new rig.
