    Building an AR-10?

my boss was showing some interest in the AR platform but wants to go with a larger round than the 5.56. I tried to push him in the 6.8 direction (because the build would be easier and cheaper) but he is more interested in the AR-10. A quick look at Rainier Arms and Bravo Company would lead me to believe that there aren't many options for parts to do your own build, and what is available is going to be very pricey. Is one better off just buying an AR 10 instead of building? and correct me if I am wrong, but for a 6.8 build, the only differences from standard 5.56 are the barrel, bolt, and magazine, right? I might be able to convince him if the price is going to be night and day between the two platforms.

Barrel, Upper, Gas System, Bolt, Carrier, Lower, Magazine, (Some triggers won't work), Buffer... There is a decent bit to the AR-10's, even deciding something as simple as what lower/magazine combination you want (SR-25 or M1A mags) can be daunting.

For hunting, 6.8 will work great, I'm sure you know that, but if he's set on an AR-10, let him go with it. There are complete rifles out there worth looking at - $2000-$2500 gets a pretty solid complete rifle... but if you throw together a quick Excel spreadsheet on comparable builds (and line it up with a thousand rounds of decent ammo), consider that helping his decision process. .308 rifles are great too, and battle rifles are the in thing right now, either way it'll be a fun adventure for him. See which exact models/layouts he's looking at, and compare those.

yeah I knew that building an AR 10 would require a lot of different parts from standard 15's, and I think I would rather stay away from it. Building for myself as an experiment is one thing, but I don't think I feel confident enough to roll the dice on someone else's $2500. if he wants the .308 I will just help him find a complete rifle and be done with it.

If you can build an AR-15 you can build an AR-10.

In fact, most of the lower parts are the same with the exception of the takedown and pivot pins, and the bolt catch.

You have to decide whether you want to build an ArmaLite AR-10 or a DPMS LR-308 because you will find mags and uppers for both and they are not interchangeable.

DPMS LR-308 and KAC SR-25 stuff is interchangeable, but AR-10 stuff doesn't work with anything other than ArmaLite-type rifles.

Then you have to buy a corresponding lower, whether it's an AR-10 lower or a DPMS lower - you can find stripped lowers in both styles if you look around.

Other than that, the lower will assemble just like an AR-15. The bolt catch may have a set screw which the AR-15 does not have but that's no big deal.

I am an AR-10 guy in case you didn't notice but I am thinking about building a DPMS clone now because Magpul came out with .308 PMAG's for that platform and they are much cheaper than the alternatives.

I was looking at the Armalite pieces at Rainier. Looked like nice stuff. I think the price may have scared him off from the AR-10 though. It is a very intriguing thought for myself for a future build though. It has taken me over a year and counting to get my AR 15 build finished, so Lord only knows how long an AR 10 would take me.

The stripped lower receiver, parts kit, and Noveske upper that you posted links to will all work but remember you have to run AR-10 mags with this particular setup - the .308 PMAG's will not work.

The PRS is available for the 7.62/.308. The cheek piece is moved back so you have room for the charging handle to fully retract the bolt. I used a ArmaLite AR10 tube, buffer and spring. The ArmaLite two stage is a nice trigger and is adjustable with three positions for the spring legs, no set screws to come loose.

Noveske 21" upper on a ArmaLite lower.

You may want a ArmaLite LPK, ArmaLite re-engineered the bolt catch and magazine release for better reliability on the large frame rifles. You can buy just those two parts also if you already have a LPK.

hatchtrikk I can't reply to your visitor message, in fact the message disappeared and I can't even find it anymore.

To answer your question, you need a regular A1/A2 receiver extension and a rifle-length buffer and action spring in order to make the PRS stock complete.

The 5-position tube you mentioned is for collapsible buttstocks and will not work with the PRS.

    Hope that helps.
