There are other designs out there that integrate the muzzle device with the barrel.

I believe you just have to use an oversized gas block to fit over the muzzle device, I believe this one uses a .936. I'll have double check when I pull the handguards off.

    Okay that makes sense.

A machined into the barrel gas block could probably be made small enough to fit a barrel nut over. Inside diameter of a barrel nut is roughly 1", the barrel nut will not need any of the excess bottom material for set screws. So if the barrel was a .625, if you make the female end top part of the machined in gas block under .375" the barrel nut should still clear. Maybe a waste of time, but this could drop the swing weight of a barrel due to eliminating the material on the side both the bottom and sides of a gas block. Could also improve barrel harmonics, and possibly make the complete barrel assembly[barrel, gas block & muzzle device] weigh in somewhere around 24 oz. A BCM ELW fluted 14.5" with gas block and pinned muzzle device weighs in roughly at 26 oz.

I know this is the wrong section for this pic, but my machined in gas block would look something like this.

No, it's all machined as one.

Not yet, haven't taken off the handguards. Probably won't do so until I get back from a trip this week.
