Concealed Carry Holster, What Style?

I've carried for a long time and over the years, developed a strong preference for an outside the waistband (OWB) on my primary side. The particular holster has changed numerous time, but not the method or location. I tried inside the waistband (IWB) carry several times, but never developed a liking for it. I also determined shoulder holsters and small of back (SOB) were a poor choice for me. I'm revisiting IWB and evaluating an Old Faithful Holsters IWB model. I'll write something up after I get some more time with it.

So, what do you prefer for concealed carry. I'm not talking about duty rigs with retention devices, but what you use on your own time while keeping a low profile.

I have been carrying my Glock 19 in a Praetor Defense Kydex Holster.



I have tried IWB carry, but that would require me to buy a bunch of new pants a few sizes larger, plus depending on the holster, it is not always easy to reholster if needed with one hand.

I haven't carried anything by this little thing in months. Maybe I'll go back to belt carry as it finally cools off.

Most days I carry a Glock 22 concealed in an X-Concealment "M" Series MOD II compact OWB holster. If I am wearing a shirt that a fits truer to my size then I may carry a Glock 27 (G27) in the same holster. I am planning on doing a review of this holster since I've had it for several months now.

I have a number of pairs of pants that are a size larger than normal. When I wear those, I will conceal either gun in a Comp-Tac Minotaur IWB holster, which is one of my favorite holsters due to it being so incredibly comfortable. It's design concept mirrors the Old Faithful holster IWB, above: kydex shell over a leather backing.

If I am not carrying the G27 off-duty, then I'm carrying a Kahr P9 in a Comp-Tac CTAC IWB. Not as comfortable as the Minotaur, but no slouch either in that regard.

While my state laws are pretty permissive as far as carry (open carry legal, "shall issue" concealed) most of the officers I've encountered seem to be not so permissive. I used to use a high-ride kydex OWB that a friend made for me, but after a lot of harassment and too much wasted time I got my CCP and I've become a Crossbreed convert. The Super Tuck Deluxe is amazing. I'm a bigger guy (6'3" #240) and I carry a 5" Springfield XD in .45 ACP. With that holster, I've almost forgotten I had it on.

SOB carry should be banned, it is nothing more than a back injury waiting to happen. Terrible terrible design to lay a chunk of steel across a spine and think its a great idea.

It seems that everytime I get a different model handgun, I have to go through about 3 or 4 holsters, until I find one that is just right for me.

My suggestion is to try as many as possible. What I love, and might fit my body perfectly, you may hate with a passion. I learned this lesson, a long time ago, asking the same question you did. Sure, the holsters recommend were top shelf, as far as quality goes, but it seems I'd get one, carry it a couple of weeks, and then sell it for half what I paid retail, to try something else. Right now, my main carry gun is a S&W M&P 40. I'm kind of fond of Safariland holsters, for that one, but my 1911's are differrent, I mean as far as holster/comfort is concerned, and I finally got a friend to make me a holster for them. I love it. But they're not for resale. Seems he found out that their are liability problems with manufacturing custom made holsters, and he can't make/sell enough of them to justify the cost. Just go from store to store, and ask if you can try this or that. Most of the best stores are happy for you to do so.

for a kydex IWB, i use a RM low rider. it is very comfortable, secure, and easy to adjust(slide back and forth) getting in and out of my vechicle. i've tried others, and this one doesn't "wear out " my hip.
