Those things are really good at what they do. They invaded my upper 40 a few years back and dropped at least 30 mature trees in a short period of time. That was a declaration of war... That smaller one I shot with the rifle was crazy. In the middle of the pond he came up for air and I plugged him and he went down under took a U turn and popped up out of the water up on to the dam 3 feet in front of me! Popped him again. Glad I didn't have the safety on. He turned around and dove back in the water. About 5 minutes later he drifted over to the shore.
The best way to survive a violent encounter is to be the one inflicting the most violence.

Wish I had time to set up the tripod ... 400mm handheld makes it tough to get a sharp image.

“It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shews, games, and sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other from this time forward forever more.” - John Adams, in a letter to his wife, July 3rd, 1776

Wore these for about a year. I've never seen a shoe do this.
Standard patrol use, I do make it a point to walk 2-3 miles on my breaks, but nothing crazy.

Crappy rubber. Whatever Chinese manufacturer made those cheaped out on the raw materials or got hosed from their own suppliers. The soles of the shoes can't be too hard, too soft, and they shouldn't deteriorate when exposed to light. Also some rubber types will slowly emit gas over time so if you just sit them in the closet they will basically dry rot even if you never wear them. They 'should' have a chemical additive to help the make up of the rubber be more stable over long periods of time, but like I said, somebody somewhere dropped the ball.
All signs of cheap rubber components being used. The QC people at the Wolverine company can't test every pair of shoes but they should have specs of what grade of materials that are used. Even the factory that made the shoes won't really know unless they run a complete battery of expensive chemical tests before they buy raw materials which is not always possible, and even then most of those tests are centered around compliance not quality.
The supplier of the supplier probably screwed somebody over, or Wolverine company just said 'it's good enough'. Either way, not good.

If you're allowed to wear tan boots check out Reebok First Responders. I'm on my third pair in the past 8 years. They're like zipping your feet into clouds. The tan ones have sand tread, the black has a lug sole. Great duty boots.

At least they didn't do this:
You'll always see at least one of these blowouts during every military dress function. Why the Exchange system continues to procure these is beyond me.

The brand new jungle boots I brought home with me split just like that after a winter in a MN garage. I expect compounds have improved in the 50 years since.
