    General Discussion Board

Someone about a week ago mentioned something about a general discussion board and being glad there wasn't one on this site. With the type of interesting people on this site I think it might be a good idea to get more people to visit more often. I would be curious about what some of the people do in there daily lives, ie. where do you go shooting, types of vehicles, general news opinions, occupations, etc. There are so few new threads that I only visit this site every other day. It may even bring more revenue to the businesses paying for advertising here. I love this site, but it can get a bit stuffy in here sometimes. Not meant to insult.

I think a general discussion board as you mentioned would largely detract from the overall theme of this site. My daily routine, where I go shooting, what I drive, and what I do for a living is all irrelevant here as this is largely a technical and review based site. I doubt many members here would be keen on the idea of posting their own personal info anyways.

I'm not opposed to friendly conversation, but the fact that my car needed a new battery the other day and Monday we went to the zoo is all unnecessary information on WEVO, and in my mind would be spam. One of the best things about this place is that is IS so focused.

It is one thing that we keep on revisiting. If we ever do have one, it won't have any political posts, that's the only way I'll go for it.

I know my opinion isn't worth much, but it seems that these kinds of threads always go south, no matter how bening they may start out as. E.g., I belong to a couple of backpacking forums. (I'm an avid backpacker). They are a diverse crowd with a very good mix of "granola head vegan ex hippies". Someone asks about popping a squirell or rabbit on a long trip to supplement their freeze dried food with fresh meat. Boom! The poor slug gets jumped on by 40 people for hunting "innocent" game, and another 40 will rant about gun control. And it's not just guns, it's everything. I know this is a gun site, and the gun subjects wouldn't be a problem, but those "free thought" threads seem to always generate problems. Seems now days that you can't say anything, literally, without someone being "offended" or their feelings hurt. Yeah I know it's B.S., but that's how it goes. And the mods have to stay on top of them all of the time. So besides politics and religion, people will still find something to fight about.

All of that said, I guess it's up to the site owner, admin's and mods, to do what ever will be done, but I kind of like the laid back, no hassle, content rich format of this site. So, my unsolicited .02's worth.

That would be great. I'm not looking for chili recipes or talking about religion. I would just like to spend more time on this blog besides clicking on "What's New" and it be a bit lacking in new threads. Seeing we all are into weapons related subjects I believe most of the general discussion would revolve around weapons and equipment. Thanks for the response.

Actually your opinions do matter. And if we ever do open up a GD section, we can discuss whatever we want, even chilly recipes. LOL.

One thing I've noticed about 90% of the forums with general discussion is this. They always devolve into the place that has established membership sniping newer members with low post counts. The search function mafia's abound on those places. When 3/4's of the post on the site don't pertain to the overall purpose, it's not a surprise relevant information gets buried deep, deep down.

I'm going to say this and I'm going to say it smiling so I hope nobody takes it the wrong way.

I like you guys, I really do. But I don't come here to get to know you. I visit WeaponEvolution to learn about weapons, processes, training and gun porn (let's be honest). I don't want to see pictures of your food, read your jokes, or hear about the fat guy at Walmart that pissed you off.

Like I said, don't take it the wrong way, you guys are great. I really love that this is a no-nonsense atmosphere dedicated to solid technical information. So my vote is to keep it simple and not clutter it up with a ton of random facts of the day.

The WEVO Staff has thrown the idea around like Paulo said, however we do not want to attract the wrong kind of attention to this forum. I completely understand the desire for it, and it is not entirely out of the question, but it would have to be something that would be closely monitored.

If we were to open a General Discussion thread, what would be some of the sub-topics that you would like to see? As Paulo said, we would want to keep Politics out of it (to a degree) but I would think that Politics/Legislation as related to firearms ownership would be on the better side as it may invoke some quality discussions. Religion, "Look at my car", "My wife is hotter than your wife", "Look at how much weight I lost", and similar posts are not what this forum is for and would not be allowed. However, it wouldn't be out of place to post things like upcoming gun related events/competitions/shows, etc as not to detract from the overall theme of WEVO.

Go ahead and post what ideas for sub-threads that you would like to see and we may revisit the idea.

I can't say what it is worth around your house, but here it carries weight. We are always interested in what people have to say, and to be honest, the more a person posts, the more we know them and the more weight their thoughts carry.

Notice it isn't about total post count, it is about knowing the people from their posts.

    Hatter,

That certainly isn't hurting any feelings here. There are some other boards I'm on where people have 15 or 20K posts, but none of them are in the weapon sections. I just don't get that concept, I come to a firearm board for firearms.

No insult taken at all. I would challenge people to get more involved by writing their own reviews. A review doesn't need to be like the staff does, and it certainly doesn't have to have flashy pictures or video. An honest review of your thoughts on something goes a long way, even if it is brief as others can always add their thoughts as well.
