Todd Kramer - Griffin Tactical Sig 556 Charging Handle.

I recently traded one of my first AR builds for a Sig 556. For the longest time a friend of mine wanted my Rock River AR and could never come up with the right trade or right amount of cash to make it happen. A month ago he hit me at a weak point and I gave in to a brand new Sig 556 with a folding stock.

The Sig platform as a base is a very solid gun with a proven piston system. The piston we all know is fast becoming the rage of the AR community. The 556 certainly comes with several shortfalls that most will be quick to point out are cosmetic. The Sig I received came with the factory folder that I quickly replaced with a Magpul CTR and Mil-Spec tube. I don?t see that folder passing any fall tests any time soon. One other shortcoming was the front pivot pin that was handily replaced by one of the new KNS Precision Pivot pins. Now I don?t need to carry a few quarters around just to take my rifle apart.

Neither of the above items really impacted performance of the Sig and were mostly replaced for the benefit of a more solid platform and easier cleaning. One glaring problem that I did come across was the Sig factory charging handle once I mounted my Eotech on top of the Sig 556. Although I could pull the charging handle to the rear that Eotech got in the way of my hand every time. I started to do a little research on the net mostly to start learning a little about aftermarket parts and came across Kas McManus the owner of Griffin Tactical.

Kas is a design engineer with extensive experience working with castings, forgings and molded products. Kas has taken that experience and designed a new charging handle for the Sig 556 that allows the use of the Eotech and greatly improves the feel and manipulation of the 556.

Below is a picture of the Griffin Tactical charging handle as well as a picture of it next to a Sig factory charging handle.

You can see in these pictures the clearance difference of the Griffin handle vs. the factory handle.

When I got the handle I was surprised at just how solid it was. The Griffin handle was CAD developed and manufactured from investment cast 4140 steel heat treated to RC42 and is currently patent pending. The handle face is aggressive but comfortable and very positive. The cast is really clean and the final finish is a very even dark park for those fashion conscious folks. This thing is VERY well made!

Installation of the handle takes about 30 seconds. Pull the handle release down, pull out the factory handle and install the new Griffin handle and you are ready to go.

The manipulation of the Sig with the Griffin tactical handle is very easy and with both the right hand and going underneath with the left hand. Every way I tried it the manipulation of the 556 was greatly improved. Your hand hits this at the right angle every time and the neither the optics nor the receiver get in the way.

Below is a picture showing the angle difference between the 2 handles.

The AR tacticool world is filled with thousands of products that one can add to their rifle. Some enhance performance, some enhance looks and some just flat improve upon the platform. I am excited to see a few items now coming out for the Sig 556 and Kas at Griffin Tactical has come up with a must have item in my opinion that actually improves the rifle. It always amazes me when a company invests millions of dollars to create something and someone outside the constraints of corporate can improve upon the design almost instantly. I look forward to seeing more from Kas and Griffin Tactical in the future.

I love mine, its perfect with my Aimpoint. I do have concerns if I ever get a right folding stock *crossing fingers for Aurora LLC Lambda*. Part of me wishes the made a straight out (instead of upturned, in case i find a right folding stock).
