BC - for stippling, do you sand it down at all (or in some form smooth it out)? So it's not so pokey and more smooth? If so, what grit?

If an item is already heavily textured then I tend to smooth it out before adding texture. However, consistent ("smooth") texture comes most strongly from technique.
