Good thing they will be using P30 mags instead of introducing yet another mag into the pipeline. Smart. I see P30 owners wanting this to get a striker-fired HK since they already got the mags.

Heckler and Koch VP9 Striker Fired Pistol

Agreed. I suspect *current* HK owners are their target market demographic.

Well, I've gotten rid of everything except HK and PPQs, so it isn't unanimous. ;-)

I'm happy to see the VP9, I just want a VP9SK to go with it.

And options for MRDS milled slides while we're at it.

Larry Vickers has weighed in giving his initial impressions of the VP9

As promised here are my first impressions of the HK VP9 - this is a non firing review as I have not gotten to the range with it yet; here goes-

    1) Overall fit and finish is excellent as you would expect from HK

    2) It has the same style of side panels and backstrap inserts as the P30 so a shooter can customize the grip to their hand - kudos to HK for that as options are good

    3) The sights are the same as the P30 and HK45 series; perfectly usable and now easily swapped out for other options - far superior in every way to the hideous Glock plastic sights and even the plastic Walther PPQ sights

    4) mags are interchangeable with P30 mags

    5) the VP9 has a P30 style mag release and ambi slide releases that are similar to the P30 - I like the mag release and drop the mag with my trigger finger and the VP9 slide release is perfectly usable but I would personally prefer a bit more ledge as I release the slide with the support hand thumb; as is it is much better than the standard Glock slide release but I prefer the more pronounced ledge of the PPQ slide release - however I do prefer the P30/VP9 mag release over the Walther euro paddle style

    6) the slide chargers appear to be a polymer U shaped piece that is under the rear sight - they work as advertised and help with slide charging. However I'm not sure they would answer the mail for one handed manipulation so if that is a big deal to you look at a replacement rear sight with a ledge design

    7) okay now the biggie; trigger characteristics- my buddy Robbie Reidsma at HK gave me the rundown on the trigger a few weeks ago and I found he was spot on; it breaks a bit heavier than the PPQ but overall has a somewhat better feel in terms of length of pull, take up, overtravel and reset. All this is subjective of course but it is very comparable to the PPQ in trigger feel ( I actually like it better ) and is miles above a Glock trigger - no comparison. Well done HK as my VP9 has the best trigger on an HK pistol since since the P7 ( the trigger guard has the groove in it like the P30 and HK45 but I believe the trigger design will help prevent trigger finger bite which bothers many shooters including myself - live fire will tell the tale )

    8) my only real complaint about the VP9 is it has a higher bore line over the backstrap/grip vs a Glock or PPQ - not dramatically more than the PPQ but the HK is the lowest of the 3 - this may or may not be a big deal to you but you need to be aware of it

Overall I am very impressed with the HK VP9 thus far and feel this pistol at the price it is going to sell at in your LGS ( $719 MSRP) is going to make it a very serious contender for all around best out of the box striker fired handgun!

Looks like the initial reviews on the pistol are positive. I will be a buyer for this pistol. Like someone said earlier, this appears to be marketed towards current HK owners. I love the fact that it uses P30 Magazines. As expensive as HK mags are, I'm glad they aren't bringing another platform of magazines into the fold. I also prefer the ergonomics of the P30 pistol, so the VP9 should be right on par.

Good for HK...I hope they do well in the U.S. market. It may force Walther now to keep the V1's in the U.S. market to keep pace....heck, maybe they might finally come out with a PPQ Compact (V1) which would be very interesting. As I said in the PPQ M2 thread, I don't see myself getting one, unless I really see it as completely blowing away the PPQ, and frankly, I don't see that happening. However, I may get a "VP40" if/when they become available.

Heckler and Koch VP9 Striker Fired Pistol

AFAIK, Walther is planning to resume the V1 in the US.

    I'm up for a PPQc V1 and/or VP9SK.

That said, in light of the VP9, seems like Walther's best bet is the M2 style to add differentiation.

Had the local shop price a VP9 for layaway, $639 is what I was quoted.
