    6.8 Build Coming Soon

As a couple people know in a stroke of luck I won the billet receiver set in the giveaway. I'm gonna be putting together what is hopefully a lightweight 6.8 hunting rifle for my dad.

In terms of components I'm thinking:
-14.5" Daniel Defense 6.8 spc Barrel
    -13" Parallax Keymod Rail
    -Ergo Grip
    -MFT Minimalist Stock
    -Stag BCG

I'm still undecided on a couple things, one of those being a muzzle device. It will be pinned and welded so I want something a little nicer. I really like the looks of the PWS break and Smith Vortex. Another thing I'm having mixed feelings on is a gas block. I would like to go adjustable so I can save brass as much as possible and tune it up to be 100% reliable. Any suggestions on these parts along with some of the parts I mentioned before are up for debate so really I'm looking for y'all's advice.

    That's awesome CoxeyDiesel!

Wish my Dad ever had actually done any hunting. Wish he lived closer than half the planet away too.

Are you sure you want to go with that minimalist stock? I have mixed feelings about them unless they have the optional paracord on them. Seems like something could get hooked when you don't want it to - like a tree branch.

You could go with something like the Troy Medieval flash hider. Thay aren't overly expensive and they are made in both the 1/2x28 and 5/8x24 thread sizes. I just saw an add for adjustable gas blocks at a good price. Look up LJ's Discounted Parts in Facebook. $30 shipped for an adjustable low profile gas block. Other than that there is BTE http://bte-usa.com/parts/AR15-gas-blocks.htm

They also have micro gas blocks both adjustable and non-adjustable. You click on the little drop down box near the bottom to select what you want from any category. They have set screw mounted ones also.

Outstanding, he'll love the 6.8 in the woods. I too helped my dad to build one which he took a 7 point with this past weekend, needless to say we were both very pleased with the results or our joint project. I was unaware that DD made a 14.5" 6.8. I would also look at ARPerformance, some of the best barrels made especially for the money. They have a 14.5" light weight on their website right now for around 200 bucks! Also look at maybe an advanced type bolt, all I use is LWRC and have been very happy, a little pricey but I think worth it. The ARP Superbolt is also a great choice if you can find them in stock.

I'll second the above with ARP. Those barrels outshoot most of the owners. Matched with a superbolt you'll be GTG.

As far as the stock I have 3 MFT and LOVE them. Never had an issue with them and I have hunted with them.

Muzzle device is all on what you like. I favor BRT fluted comps but since I will have a suppressor soon I've converted all of them to QD mounts.

Gas blocks I would go with a syrac if the budget allows. If not then a seekins adj will serve you well.

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

I do have a SPR/DMR planned out for a future build and did a lot of research comparing 6.5 and 6.8.
May I ask why you chose 6.8?

I'm gonna check out the ARP barrels and bolts. I went with 6.8 because for me it's proven in the woods. I've taken plenty of deer with it and so has he. Since I was building an AR anyways I figured, what the hell.

Sounds like a good enough reason to me!

I love the looks of that 14.5" ARP barrel and the price is very appealing. May go ahead and pull the trigger on it today.

Pretty sure you are mistaken on DD making a 14.5" 6.8 barrel. I have the 16" version and it is a good shooting barrel. I wish I would have went with the 18" as a good friend has a Bison Armory barrel and sees a few hundred FPS more out of it with handloads than my 16". Also when I ran a LWRC bolt it damaged almost every piece of brass I ran through the gun. The Daniel Defense bolt does not. Not to mention you can get 2 of the DD bolts for less than the LWRC.

I just got the 15" hand guard from Rainier Arms today, so, I hope by this weekend I'll have my own 6.8 to play with. Mines in .277 Wolverine, using an 18" SS barrel which came from one of the sponsors of the 100K giveaway, and a slick side upper from Aero Precision. I'm not doing any "big game" hunting this season, just small game, rabbit and squirrel with a .22, and some upland game, but I plan to hammer some coyotes, and crono some loads to get an idea of the external ballistics and how it will work on larger game. This round has interested me since I first started reading about it, as both a tactical and hunting (mostly varmint) round. Cool thing is, that it uses a standard bolt and pmags. Hope to get my AR-10 finished this weekend, also. So I've got two new rifles to test. I have a number of AR's, so I'm not going to build a special lower for the .277WLV round, just use one of the others as a donor. I'm pretty sure I can just about guess what to see with the .308, but I'm really curious to see what the 6.8 (.277) will do out to about 200 - 300 yards.

I noticed a little rim damage with mine as well for about the the first 50 to 100 rounds then it seemed to go away. I still get claw marks sometimes now but only when working loads up and get a little too hot.
