.458Socom starting

So... finally getting my chit together and starting a .458Socom SBR upper. Going to use the CMT upper I won in the stick giveaway, and getting a Tromix 10½" pistol gas barrel. Still undecided on a handguard, but leaning towards an SLR Solo. Will be using an SLR adjustable gas block.

Anyone using .458socom? I'm wondering if there is anything I need to know that is unique, troublesome, etc. I actually know and have met Tony Rumore from Tromix, so I have him to bounce ideas and questions off... but nothing like enduser help too.

Eventually it will be suppressed (Lane?) and shooting subs... when I can afford the 5-600g bullets!

But I'd be curious to hear your experiences with this round. Obviously not going to be a plinking round, but just like the thumper aspect of this. kinda like a semi-auto 45/70, and jsut the fact that it's different.

Local home based FFL near me may still have a 458 9" suppressed upper for sale.

Very cool. I've always had good luck with Tromix parts. I built my last .458 for deer hunting in Indiana. Sadly my hunting buddy up there passed away so I never got to use it. Loved blasting with it at the range though.

Thanks, but I like tinkering with them and getting the parts I want. Out of curiosity, do you know the asking price?

nice! I've good good luck with Tromix parts, and their work. Tony has done my Saiga12 and Saiga308 and they are sooo much fun. Nice to see the Hexmag... I'm thinking of getting a few for the Socom since I use different mags for different calibers - Pmag for 223, Lancers for 300blk and I was going to do standard alum GI mags but I like the Hexmag idea. any issues with them and the 458? Anything I need to be wary of with the round?

And *finally* got my hands on some brass...

The GI mags I tried wouldn't work with the lead tipped ammo. I believe it was 375 or 400 gr. Corbon. No issues with the Lancers I tried but I never did try a Hexmag. Only used in the pic. For hunting I had my trusty Pmag that I modified. Just dremeled a little notch out of the front lip and it would feed everything just fine. Takes 5 minutes to mod one and I assume you could do the same to a Hexmag if needed.

ahh.. ok. I was reading up on the mag issues, it seems that blending the barrel receiver to the upper solves that issue. And Tony is doing that for me on mine. I'll inquire to the Hexmag guys about 458 use as well.

Jim, last I saw, believe he was asking $1100. Not sure what barrel or suppressor or if it was pinned.

Finally over my Strep throat and got some work done!

I think I'm going to disassemble it and have the upper cerakoted - too much of a difference between the lower and upper.

Complete with Tromix 10.5" pistol gas barrel, matched bolt, Tromix brake, OEM handguard, SLR gasblock, Hexmag and my Stickman giveaway winnings, the CMT upper!

Now to load some ammo and test the sucker.

EDIT: I should add that after asking about handguards, I ended up going with the SLR Solo in 10". Only two things were wrong with that plan, 1) the10" with the 10.5" barrel left JUUUUST a tad too much rail for a direct thread suppressor to attach, since it would not under ride the rail (I talked with SLR and they thought it would work since there was a tad of smudge factor on the length) and 2) the Solo hanguard would not pass over the .850" gasblock since the screw on the side got in the way. So I swapped plans - the .458 now has the OEM Supply rail (a Stickman GAW supporter) and the 5.56 upper will sport the SLR, since with the quick attached brake on the muzzle the suppressor will not touch the rail. But it is sooooooo close, it looks awesome.
